2 About the Atlantic Coast Conference A Tradition of Excellence Consistency. It s the mark of true excellence in any endeavor However, in today s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 56th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 108 national championships, including 57 in women s competition and 51 in men s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 145 times in men s competition and 92 times in women s action. 2007-08 in Review The 2007-08 academic year concluded with the league pocketing three more national team titles and 12 individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 42 national team titles over the last 12 years. The ACC has won two or more NCAA titles in 26 of the past 28 years. The ACC s 2007-08 national champions were North Carolina in field hockey, Wake Forest in men s soccer, and Florida State in men s outdoor track & field. Overall, 124 ACC teams placed in NCAA championships during the past season. Eight teams competed in football bowl championships, with Boston College capturing the Champs Sports Bowl title and Wake Forest winning the Meineke Car Care Bowl crown. The ACC placed at least one team in the final top 10 nationally in 21 of the 25 sponsored sports for which polls were available. In all, 38 ACC teams finished their season with a top 10 ranking, including five at the No. 1 spot. For the 2007-08 campaign, eight of the 12 ACC schools finished in the Top 50 of the final NACDA Directors Cup ranking. The NACDA Directors Cup, awarded annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), honors the top institution maintaining a broadbased athletic program, achieving success in many sports. A total of 237 student-athletes from the ACC earned first-, second-, third- or fourth-team All-America honors this past year. In addition, the ACC produced nine national Players of the Year, one national Freshman of the Year and eight national Coach of the Year recipients. The ACC Academic Honor Roll record was broken for the 23rd straight year in 2007-08 as 2,742 student-athletes were recognized for their work in the classroom. Forty-three student-athletes were honored in the spring of 2008 with the ACC naming 38 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholars and three Jim and Pat Thacker Award winners. In addition to earning academic recognition on the conference level, 120 student-athletes earned national All- Academic honors from CoSIDA and/or other sport-specific organizations. Also, seven student-athletes representing four of the 12 ACC member institutions were named 2007-08 NCAA Postgraduate Scholars. The Championships The Conference currently conducts championship competition in 25 sports 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming & diving, indoor and outdoor track & field, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981.
