50 th historical tidbit. Dr. John S. Dahlem HISTORY OF THE CALIFORNIA INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION SOUTHERN SECTION (CIFSS) PAUL CASTILLO FORMER CIFSS ASSISTANT COMMMISSIONER THE BASKETBALL GURU Paul Castillo, CIFSS Assistant Commissioner, retired on June 30, 2008, after 42 years of service to the youth of Southern California including 8 years with the CIFSS office. Paul was one of the first hires for current CIFSS Commissioner Dr. Jim Staunton and was popular among all the constituents of the CIFSS. Paul wore many hats for CIF, but will be best remembered for all his work in taking the sport of high school basketball to its highest zenith in the history of the CIFSS. Paul came up through the ranks of high school athletics and fully understood the importance of providing quality opportunities for all kids to succeed on the playing fields. Paul was always amazed at the level of athletic prowess shown by CIFSS athletes and felt privileged to be associated with all the coaches, administrators and parents who made up the CIFSS family. The CIFSS Hall of Famer, for his tennis coaching career at Paramount High School, will be missed by all those who knew that Paul considered his tenure at the CIFSS office to be his Dream Job! TIDBITS ON PAUL CASTILLO Santa Monica Hospital Paul was born in the Santa Monica Hospital on June 29, 1942. He grew up in West Los Angeles near the Veterans Hospital, attended Brentwood Elementary and University High School. At Uni, he played football and baseball he stated, I was just an average athlete.

He knew the famous teen rock and roll singers from University High School.Jan & Dean. He played Little League Baseball. He began work as a 13 year old with his Dad at Farmers Market (then with his Uncle in Santa Monica) at Castillo s Mexican Restaurant which was famous in Southern California. He worked very hard which runs in his family. His mother is still alive at 91 years of age. The good food at Castillo s He graduated from University High School in 1960 and attended Santa Monica City College for two years. At SMCC, he walked on as a tennis player and made the team.

University High School Boys League 1960

He always wanted to be a teacher since his days at Brentwood Elementary. He had a favorite teacher, Leo Sanchez, who served as a mentor to him. Unfortunately, Mr. Sanchez, was killed in a car crash in Mexico where he had taken some of his students to help the local people. Paul said he carried the funeral notice for many years in his wallet as a motivation. He attended San Fernando Valley State College (currently California State University at Northridge CSUN)) and majored in physical education and health science. San Fernando Valley State College 1960 s One of his health science teachers at Valley State was the famous announcer Dick Enberg who, along with being one of the best announcers of all time, was also Professor with a Ph.D., and the school s freshman baseball coach. He did his student teaching at Monroe High School and Sequoia Junior High School in the San Fernando Valley. He graduated in 1965 with a Secondary Teaching Credential.

FOND MEMORIES AT PARAMOUNT HIGH SCHOOL

His first job was as a physical education teacher at San Fernando Junior High School. He moved to Paramount High School in 1969 teaching physical education and health safety. His first year at Paramount he coached B football, B basketball and took over the varsity tennis team. All his tennis players were complete beginners when they entered high school. Paul said he had only one player with any experience in his entire coaching career and that player was coached by his own mother. Paul, at Paramount High School, won over 500 tennis matches, with 9 League Championships. He became the Athletic Director at Paramount in 1987. He was extremely proud of the success the football team had as they were crowned CIFSS Champions in 1988, 1989, and runner-up in 1990. They did it with players who were great high school football players and would, as Paul stated, Really get after you. He loved his time at Paramount and said, It was a great place to work with super kids, teachers and administrators. Paul was the CIFSS Athletic Director of the Year in 1991. As the athletic director at Paramount, he was very proactive in hiring female coaches. During this period of time he also taught English at Compton Community College. He received his Masters Degree from College of St. Thomas.

He met his wife Glenna at Paramount and they coached the tennis teams together and married in 1980. In those days you could not be married and teach at the same school. Paul had to go before the Board of Education and ask for their permission to marry Glenna and still stay at Paramount his rationale was it was all right to live with Glenna and still work at Paramount, but he could not marry her they wisely accepted his request. He was hired as a CIFSS Assistant Commissioner on February 9, 2000, after 31 years in public education. He was responsible for the sports of basketball, boy s and girl s tennis, boy s and girl s track, and boy s and girl s cross country along with numerous other responsibilities. His son Dan is a police officer in Fullerton and his daughter Vicky, who is expecting, lives in Boston. He has three grandsons. Paul and Glenna love to run and bicycle together. Paul enjoys reading fiction and will be kept very busy with travel and Glenna s expertise at Cerritos Travel. Comments about Paul from the CIFSS office staff: A commensurate professional. Rock solid in everything he does. He a pro! Very disciplined. I wish I could look like him he looks 40 years old! Young at heart. Loves his wheat thins and yogurt. We call him, Monsier Le Blade because he is in such good shape. Loves to go to Ojai tennis tournament. Now that he is retired, he can spend extra time in Mexico with his former CIFSS friends. He is a man of integrity.
