Ariel Hand Bag Pattern By Aimee Larsen for HomeSpun-Threads Materials: 1 Yard inside fabric 1 Yards Outside Fabric ¼ Yard for Straps and Flap 1 Yard Heavy Fusible Interfacing 1 D-Ring & Clip Cut & Iron - Cut out pattern and tape together at red dotted line. - Cut 2, Inside Fabric and Outside Fabric using the pattern attached. - Cut 1, 2 x 16 strap for front of bag - Cut 2, 4 x 8 flap for front of bag - Cut 1, 4 x 28 strap for bag handle - Cut 4, Heavy Fusible Interfacing using bag pattern and iron to inside and outside bag parts on the wrong side. - Cut1, 1 x 16 & 2 x 28 Strip of heavy fusible interfacing and iron to the wrong side of straps, for the 28 strap, fold edge to the middle and press, fold in half, align the clean folded edges and press. For the 16 strap, fold edges to the middle and press. Do not fold in half. - Cut 2, 4 x 8 heavy fusible interfacing and iron to wrong side of flap. - (optional) Cut 8 x 8 from left over fabric for an interior pocket. Sewing 1. Sew Strap for handle. Sew down both sides with a 3/16 seam line. Cut off 2 of strap and set aside. 1 Copyright 2009 HomeSpun-Threads www.homespun-threads.com

2. Align 16 strap to the center of the bag and mark from the bottom up 8. Sew from the bottom of the bag down the side of the strap 3/16 from the edge. Stop at the 8 mark, turn and sew across the strap and back down to the bottom of the bag. (see top left image) 3. Slip metal ring onto strap until it stops. Begin sewing down one side of the strap from the top of the bag, sew until you get close to the ring, as close as possible, the turn and sew across the strap just as you did before and back up to the top of the bag. 4. Place front of bags right sides together. Make a 3/8 seam. Sew along the bottom and press out. Sew along the sides following lines of bag. Clip out the top notch in the sharp corner. 5. Pull the bottom notches open and pull closed. Align the side and bottom seams and sew 3/8 seam as shown. (see top right image) 2 Copyright 2009 HomeSpun-Threads www.homespun-threads.com

6. Turn outside back, right side out and push corners of bottom out. Iron the top down at the line indicated on the pattern, about 1 Sew strap/handle to the bag. Do so by placing one end of the strap on the very top edge of the bag at one seam and stitch down. Do the same for the other end of the strap. The edges of the strap will be tucked into the bag approximately 1 when the top of the bag is turned down. Doing this secures the strap. 7. Sew the inside bag using the same method as the outside bag. If you want to add a pocket do so before sewing up the inside bag. Sew the 8 squares right side together, leave a 2-3 hole and turn out, press and push corners out. Place pocket in the center of your inside bag with the opening at the bottom. Stitch with a heavy back and forth beginning stitch at one top edge of the pocket. Stitch 3/16 from the edge, down, across the bottom of the pocket and back up. 8. Tuck the inside back into the outside bag. (see top right image). Fold the inside bag down and pin the top of the back all the way around, lining up the clean folded edges. (tip: the inside bag top edge is folded towards the outside bag.) When pinning, be sure that the strap edge is down inside the bag and be sure to align your side seams. 9. Now use the 2 piece that you cut from your strap and fold it over the bottom of your hook. Lay your hook and strap as shown on the right side of your flap. Sew down on side of the flap, across the bottom and over the strap for the hook, then back up to the top. Use a 3/8 seam. When you are finished it should look like this picture to the left. Clip corners, as shown, turn out and press. If you desired, sew a 3/16 top stitch around the edge of the flap. Align flap with the center of the back of the bag and tuck in between the inside and outside bag. Pin, now test your flap to see if it needs to be tucked in more or less but clipping it to the D-Ring. Adjust as needed. 3 Copyright 2009 HomeSpun-Threads www.homespun-threads.com

10. Make sure the top of the back is carefully pinned. See the strap and how it s tucked in, the flap is as well. Now topstitch 3/16 around the top of the back to finish. Remove pins as you go to prevent injury those little suckers will cut. You are finished! For supplies for making these bags, I highly recommend visiting sites like ebay and etsy and searching for similar hardware called hooks or D rings. I also like to use steel O rings. I always use sizes that are at least 1 in width because the pattern of all my straps results in a 1 wide strap. You can adjust the width of your straps easily with the method I use. Please consider all these instructions methods and you can adjust and change them as you need. I always love to experiment with methods and design shapes. The key to making this bag unique is the flap with the hook closure. You can use any kind of closure on this bag, a tie, a flap with a snap, a flap with a hook (as shown), a simple snap closure, if you are skilled enough you can also add a zipper (see my Make-Up Bag Pattern) for easy instructions. Always remember, there is no right or wrong way to make your own handbag! If you have questions, please feel free to e-mail me.
