DEFENCE INNOVATION REPORT Canada s defence industry pushes the frontiers of applied knowledge, producing the highest quality products and services for Canada s Armed Forces and our allies. We are proud to do our part keeping Canadians safe.

ABOUT CANADA S DEFENCE INDUSTRY * all data collected from State of Canada s Defence Industry, 2018

CREATING HIGHLY SKILLED JOBS FOR CANADIANS Canada s defence industry provides highly skilled jobs of the future that require a solid foundation in science, technology, engineering and mathematic STEM skill sets. WAGES 60% ABOVE THE MANUFACTURING AVERAGE * all data collected from State of Canada s Defence Industry, 2018 MEET ALAN THOMPSON, Chief Engineer RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM), MDA Working with his team at MDA, Alan is developing remote sensing satellites with imaging capabilities for the Canadian Space Agency. I m passionate about my work both because of the technical challenge in constructing such a complex system, but also because of the wide ranging, interesting and valuable applications.

PUSHING THE FRONTIER OF INNOVATION Research and Development (R&D) has a direct correlation with a sector s ability to innovate. Canada s defence sector is leading the way in R&D intensity a well established ratio that compares an industry s investments in R&D to its revenues. $400M IN R&D SPENDING R&D INTENSITY OF 4.5x 14% CANADA S MANUFACTURING SECTOR OVER 64% OF R&D SPENDING COMES DIRECT FROM INDUSTRY * all data collected from State of Canada s Defence Industry, 2018 MEET SAM MACDONALD, President, Deep Trekker Sam and her team at Deep Trekker create underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) intended to remove humans from risky situations. We want to explore the unknown and help keep Canadians safe by making tools that help uncover our underwater world.

PAN-CANADIAN AND TECHNOLOGICALLY DIVERSE Technology and service specializations across the country are diverse and encompass everything from: naval vessel and aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul in the west; to combat vehicle and aircraft fabrication in Ontario; to munitions and sensor development in Quebec; to naval shipbuilding and conversions in the Atlantic. 20% WESTERN CANADA 14% ATLANTIC CANADA 28% QUEBEC 38% * all data collected from State of Canada s Defence Industry, 2018, based on employment by region. ABOUT CADSI OUR ASSOCIATION The Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI) is the national industry voice of more than 800 Canadian companies that produce world-class goods, services and technologies made across Canada and sought the world over. Our members are a part of the defence and security industry, which contribute to the employment of more than 60,000 Canadians and generate over $10 billion in annual revenues, roughly 60 percent of which come from exports. As a not-for-profit membership organization, CADSI s imperative is to communicate on behalf of our members the importance and depth of these industries to key decision-makers. CADSI is committed to working as a thoughtful, trusted and reliable partner to the Government of Canada to openly and honestly articulate the needs and concerns of our members. That is why we focus on bringing together companies that develop and deliver the best defence and security goods, services and technologies the Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian Coast Guard, and Canada s security service providers need to keep Canadians safe and secure every day. It is also why we make it our mission to provide a platform for our members to interact with the Canadian Government as well as foreign governments to showcase their products and services so that they can compete globally to profitably grow their businesses. Located in the nation s capital, CADSI has a dynamic team guided by a Board of Directors and supported by Operating Committees of members. Together we aim to achieve these goals and demonstrate to Canadians the innovative and world-class quality of the products and services our members offer to help build a prosperous and stronger Canada for all.
