RESTRICTED GENERAL AGREEMENT ON L/«83 TARIFFS AND TRADE 27 September 1957 Limited distribution Original: Spanish FREE-TRADE AREA BETWEEN NICARAGUA AND EL SALVADOR Sixth Annual Report (1957) by the Government of Nicaragua Previous reports have shown that, particularly since 1954-, there has been a decline in trade between the two countries, as can be seen from the following table: Nicaragua; Trade with El Salvador under the Free-Trade Treaty IMPORTS EXPORTS 1953 283,379 1,235,574 1954 1,325,628 1,808,470 1955 958.371 742,192 1956 787,274 478,074 In 1955, this decline resulted from the fact that Nicaragua closed. the frontier to exports of grains to El Salvador because of a shortage of suoh products following unfavourable weather conditions. Although at the.. end of 1956 Nicaragua again permitted exports of grains to El Salvador, exports did not increase in view of the fact that the latter country,, having been unable to procure grain supplies from Nicaragua in the previous year, acquired considerable quantities of some grains from other countries and at the same time increased production of grains, particularly of msize. Consequent!», in order to avoid any disequilibrium in the price of such products, El Salvador imposed import controls on some grains such as maize and rice. It is apparent every year that whenever exports increase, imports also increase, and vice versa; this is due to the fact that trade is usually effected under a compensation system. Annexed to this report are two schedules regarding imports from and two regarding exports to El Salvador, as well as a table showing the percentage of Nicaragua's total international trade which is accounted for by trade with El Salvador.'
