Sandhill cranes are amazing birds that can stand 4 feet tall and can have a wing span up to 6 feet wide. These birds also have a unique call that can be heard almost a mile away! Learn more interesting facts and how we can share our environment with them during this free presentation. Kid Connection-All About Sea Turtles from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 6. Calling kids ages 5-13 to join LEC staff as we discuss the threatened and endangered sea turtle species that nest on the beaches of Volusia County. Learn about anatomy & diet, how lighting on the beach can affect their nesting habits and about their connection to the ancient beach of Lyonia Preserve. Pines of the Preserve hike from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12. Join us on an exploratory hike to learn more about the different pine trees found in Lyonia Preserve. We will discuss differences between the leaf structures and pine cones in the preserve and compare them to other pine trees found in our area. Participants should bring water, wear closed toed shoes and be prepared to hike on unpaved, sugar sand trails. This program is free. Amazing Animal Senses from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12. Meet in the LEC classroom to learn how different animals use their senses. Discover how animals use these abilities for everything from finding food to deterring predators. After the presentation, participants will meet with some of our animal ambassadors and discuss more on this topic. This program is free. Spring Forward Hike in Lyonia Preserve from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 13. Begin Daylight Saving Time with LEC staff on a guided hike through Lyonia Preserve as we look for signs of spring. Participants should bring water, wear closed toed shoes and be prepared to hike on unpaved, sugar sand trails. This program is free.

Join LEC staff as they share interesting bear facts, track and scat molds, and other educational items relating to this amazing animal. Learn everything from their natural habitats, behaviors and important role they play in our ecosystem. This program is free. Earthy Edibles from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 19. Ever wondered what plants are edible and which should be avoided? Come join us on this exploratory hike into the preserve to investigate what native plants are edible, their historical uses and how these plants can be incorporated into your landscaping. This program is free. Backyard Birds from 2:00-3:00 Saturday, March 19. Learn how to create a bird-friendly space in your backyard. The program will include helpful tips on the types of plants you ll need to provide for birds, how to identify birds that are often seen in Florida backyards, and information on why some birds only visit our state periodically. This program is free.
Popcorn & a Movie- Turtle-The Incredible Journey from 2:00-3:30 pm Sunday, March 20. Join us for this award winning film depicting a spectacular adventure of one loggerhead sea turtle s journey from a young hatchling emerging from her nest in the sand, to a 25 year old adult who returns to the same beach to lay her own nest. It s a remarkable story about the perilous trek around the globe of this threatened species and an amazing odyssey you won t want to miss! Owls: Silent Hunters from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26. Reinier Munguia, President of the Lake Region Audubon Society returns for this unique program! Reinier will discuss why he feels owls are more enigmatic than any other bird. Wise, mysterious and deadly are some of the attributes of these mostly nocturnal raptors. Owls are among the top predators of the avian world. Equipped with hi-tech gadgets, from their eyes to their talons, owls are designed to hunt some of the most elusive prey in the most difficult conditions. Join us as we venture into the world of the silent hunters to learn what it takes to be an owl and how we can help protect these magnificent birds. This program is free. Regularly Scheduled Programs throughout the month of March: Guided Scrub Strolls @ 9 am every Monday and Friday. LEC staff will lead these guided hikes in Lyonia Preserve. Strolls will be offered every Monday and Friday from 9:00 am - 10:00 am.
