We provide customized solutions using design capabilities that feature our advanced, proprietary spring design software. We also offer performance testing that allows for rapid production of spring prototypes to help our customers achieve a competitive advantage by improving their speed-to-market. By providing expert metallurgical knowledge with long experience in spring production, we have the expertise to optimize spring design, which will contribute to better end product performance for our customers. Applications for power springs Automotive Appliance Cord reels Cable reels Defense Elevator door closures Fall safety restraints Hose reels Outdoor power equipment Tool balancers Window balance systems Other specialized retraction and counter balance systems LESJÖFORS SPRINGS Our product portfolio includes a wide variety of flat spring categories such as constant force springs, constant torque springs, hair springs (clock springs), power springs, and reels. All products are designed and manufactured to each customer s unique performance and size requirements. APPLICATION From small electronic and precision instrumentation springs to large industrial springs, we confidently serve engineers and buyers of OEM and replacement spring components in almost every area of apparatus and equipment manufacturing. 3
POWER SPRINGS Power Springs are identified by the many coils of strip material stored in a case, barrel, or band, and connected to a central arbor or shaft. When this shaft is rotated, the material starts to wind flat against it. This action creates an increasing torque for as many turns as it can be wound until there is no material left. Our capabilities range from 0,05 mm to 3,20 mm material thickness and from 0,75 mm to 76 mm material widths. Springs can be made using pre-stressed (back wound) or conventional (from flat) methods. Pre-stressed springs are spooled to a special free diameter and back wound into a housing or keeper, while conventional wound springs are manufactured and wound in the flat state. The advantages of pre-stressed springs are that it allows maximized torque from a specific material. Conventional wound springs, however, offer increased Cycle Life. Applications for power springs include seatbelt retractors, tape measures, retractable dog leads, electrical cord retractors, hose reels, wind-up toys, pull start on small gas-powered engines, tool balancers, and valves. 4
CONSTANT FORCE SPRINGS Constant force springs achieve nearly constant retraction force by paying off material from a spool. Commonly used for displays and counterbalances. Constant force springs are manufactured from flat strip material and spooled to a specific free diameter to give the needed pull force. Constant Force Extension Springs are used in a wide variety of applications where a constant pull force is needed. Applications for constant force springs include window balancers, counter balances, and point-of-purchase shelving and displays. CONSTANT TORQUE SPRINGS Constant torque springs can be used in timers, toys, appliances and to various cable/hose retraction products. Most commonly used for wind-up motors. Constant Torque springs generate a virtually flat torque curve over the range of output turns. When paired up with gearing mechanisms they produce a steady, consistent motor unit used in appliances and timers. Applications for constant torque springs include arden hose retraction, turntables, appliances, power generation and toys. 5
HAIR SPRINGS Hair springs (clock spring or open spiral springs), can be used in a wide variety of applications where working turns are low and a linear increasing torque is needed. The torque output on a hair spring produces a linear torque profile because the spring coils don t normally come in contact with each other. Therefore, there will be no output torque loss due to friction. The material sizes used are similar to power springs, leading to varying product sizes from large counter balances and actuators to components of small medical devices and instrumentation. Applications for hair springs include valves, medical devices, actuators, instruments, and counter balances. REELS Reels are self-contained spring units that are designed for ease of use and flexibility in any application. They allow for fast installation and are available with cables attached externally and with a variety of arbor configurations. Applications for reels include elevator door assists, counter balancers, product displays, and theft prevention (security devices). Designs are also available that completely enclose the spring with a lightweight durable outer shell. The spring assembly and cord/cable are contained internally. Our capabilities also allow us to custom engineer a reel for your application to ensure the performance meets your specific requirements. 6
TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT The performance of your spring or strip component is crucial for the function of your application. To determine the products performance, Lesjöfors makes calculations and simulations that later are verified through measuring and testing. We have the capacity to calculate, measure and test all types of springs, from very small and thin strip components to heavy power springs. COMPLETE DEVELOPMENT PARTNER Lesjöfors wide network of product and manufacturing science includes fields as material, surface treatment, cosmetics, dimensioning, manufacturing, testing and quality assurance. We cooperate with the leading material and alloy suppliers in the world, which gives us access to the best knowledge of material qualities. We use leading-edge methods to support you with calculations and dimensioning for your specific requirements. FUNCTION AND RELIABILITY The selection of the optimal material and surface treatment for your product is dependent on factors as working temperature and risk of corrosion etc. Lesjöfors spring experts give you advice and recommendations for the best function of your component. Examples of Spring Materials that we work with: Cold drawn low-alloy steel Quenched and tempered spring steel Stainless spring steel Tension, compression and bending loads are together with torque important parameters for the function of springs. Fatigue strength with high-safety is especially important to dynamic working springs. Mechanical qualities such as wear resistance, surface structure and friction are important to some components. As your partner in a development project, we contribute with specific competence about the product, its qualities and manufacturing. Lesjöfors is a knowledge based company within the spring and pressings industry 7
