DOWNEY After more than a month of construction, Raytheon unveiled its signature logo Monday morning, mounting a bright, neon red sign to the front of the 27,000-square foot facility, which will soon house its Public Safety Regional Technology Center, slated to open this September. The new sign, hoisted into place right outside the two-story office building, located at 11899 Woodruff Avenue, marks the beginning of a nearly $2 million renovation of the facility, which will serve as a technology center geared towards improving communications technologies used by public safety agencies. According to Michael Bostic, director of Raytheon s public safety solutions, renovation has already begun at the site, which will accommodate more than 25 program engineers and managers as early as next month. We er moving right along at a rapid pace, said Bostic, a retired, 34-year LAPD veteran who joined Raytheon s Network Centric System division three years ago. The mission is different, but the capabilities through Raytheon are the same. We re not really equipment sellers, we re problem solvers expanding our business, transferring these capabilities to the public safety market. Bostic also praised the city for fostering a business-friendly environment while will serve as the epicenter of Raytheon s civil communications business in the western United States, providing test and research facilities, training, maintenance, logistics, and system support. We re looked around at a lot of the different neighborhoods. We chose Downey because of its location to our customers it s industrial, centrally located, right in the center of everything, said Bostic. The city has been exceptionally helpful during this process. Once completed, engineers at the new Raytheon site will focus on comprehensive projects, such as the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable Communications System, an integrated, wireless voice and data communications system that will support more the 34,000 first responders and local
RAYTHEON UNVEILS SIGNAGE AT NEW FACILITY Continued mission-critical personnel in more than 80 cities, including Downey. Utilizing an interoperable, broadband system across the Los Angeles basin, the LA-RICS would allow law enforcement, fire and emergency medical first responders to communicate through one system, increasing accuracy and efficiency, Bostic explained. According to Raytheon officials, the regional technology center, staffed by nearly 150 people, will eventually feature a large testing facility, laboratory and first-floor showroom where experiments and products will be on display for the public. Bostic said Raytheon plans to host a grand opening event in September for the community and city officials once the center s renovation is complete. Raytheon, the aerospace and defense company, which gamered more than $25 billion in sales last year and employs 72,000 people worldwide, announced in March intentions to open a Public Safety Regional Technology Center in Downey, dedicated to developing and testing new public safety technologies. FCC Seeks Comment on Chemical Company s 900 MHz Channel Request The FCC is seeking comment on a Texas chemical company s request to license 900 MHz channels. On June 9th, 2010, Amoco Chemical submitted a request for waiver to permit it to use 896 901 / 935 940 MHz (900 MHz) band itinerant use channels in the private land mobile radio (PLMR) system for its plant in Texas City, Texas. Four 900 MHz band frequency pairs were designated for operation at unspecified locations for varying periods of time ( itinerant use ). Amoco seeks to add three of those frequency pairs to its license for 900 MHz industrial / land transportation station WPAH-364. Amoco is engaged in processing and creating chemical products from petroleum products. Company officials said the purpose of the proposed channel expansion is to eliminate channel congestion and provide more reliable communications on the existing system for the chemical plant, adjoining refinery, and waterways that serve as Amoco s terminal port. Amoco s frequency coordinator said that no other 900 MHz band frequencies are available in the vicinity. KENWOOD DONATES RADIOS TO ALABAMA TORNADO RELIEF EFFORT K Kenwood recently donated fifty professional LMR mobiles and amateur radios to the city of Tuscaloosa, Ala. In accepting the radios, Tuscaloosa mayor Walt Maddox indicated that the radios would be used in their city s emergency response efforts for what has become one of the worst tornadoes in Alabama history. ICOM s P25 PRODUCTS MEET CAP REQUIREMENTS Icom announced its IC-F9011 / F9021 portable and IC-F9511 / F9521 mobile Project 25 (P25) radios are Compliance Assessment Program (CAP) compliant. CAP is a voluntary program that demonstrates a supplier s equipment meets defined P25 standards in performance and interoperability. Public Safety agencies receiving federal grant money for P25 equipment are required to purchase CAP-compliant equipment. The CAP program requires manufacturers to submit products to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recognized test laboratories for an assessment process. Manufacturers also are required to provide a Supplier s Declaration of Compliance (SDoC), specifying the equipment tested and the DHS-identified lab performing the test supply pass / fail data for each of the tests.
