Elsa is a lovely hat for charming young girls. It is knit in the round almost entirely in garter stitch from the brim up. The only challenging part is in the brim which is divided into 16 equal parts, which are knit loops into which a knit ribbon is woven. The added bow will delight young fashionistas

YARN AND NOTIONS 70 gr of Graine de Laine Physalis 100 % merino 100 gr = 250 m, DK (or approx.200 yards of an equivalent DK) Needles : US size 2 1/2 (3 mm), on 32" cable US size 6 (4 mm), on 32" cable. Stitch marker. Tapestry needle. SIZE : 4/6 years. The hat is very stretchable and can fit up to a 19.7" (50 cm) head circumference. Circumference of the brim s hat (non stretched): 18.1 " (46 cm) ABBREVIATIONS (in alphabetical order) BO : bind off CO : cast on K : knit M : marker P : purl PM : place marker RS : right side TBL : through the back loop TOG : together SSK : slip, slip knit (a way to make a decrease) st, sts : stitch, stitches WS : wrong side YO : yarn over (a way to to make an increase) GAUGE 21 stitches 4" (10 cm) in the round on US size 6 needles. TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE SSK : slip the first stitch as if to knit, slip the second stitch as if to knit, then insert the left needle into the front part of both stitches and knit them together (a way to make a decrease). DIRECTIONS BRIM Using size 2 1/2 needles, CO 96 sts. Join in the round using Magic Loop technique, being careful not to twist stitches, PM. Knit 4 rounds. next row : K across. The next step is for the loops (for the ribbon and bow). Remove marker before beginning. K6, knit 11 rows in garter stitch back and forth on these 6 sts. Cut yarn, leaving an 8" (20 cm) tail (long enough to weave it at the end). Repeat this step 14 more times. PM (it will be off to the right by 6 sts, from where it was placed at the beginning). knit 11 rows on these last 6 sts. Joining the top of the loops : After working these 6 last sts, K all the "groups" of 6 sts one after the other. You should have 96 sts on your needles. next row : K across. BODY OF THE HAT Changing to size 6 needles, knit approx. 48 rows (4.75" / 12 cm) in garter stitch, starting with a K row (so you will K 1 row, P 1 row) First decrease round : K2TOG around, 48 sts remaining. Knit 3 rows in garter stitch (P 1 row, K 1 row, P 1 row). Page "3

Second decrease round : K2TOG around, 24 sts remaining. P 1 row. Third decrease round : K2TOG around, 12 sts remaining. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail to weave in. Weave yarn through all remaining sts, pulling tightly. For best results, weave yarn twice around into remaining sts and weave in ends. Weave in ends from the loops as pictured below : 1 3 2 4 After passing yarn through to WS of hat (picture #4), weave it in and cut yarn. RIBBON With US 2 1/2 needles, CO 7 sts. Knit in garter stitch until piece measures (without stretching) the same as the brim of the hat. BO all sts. Weave ribbon in and out of the loops (starting at the beginning, inside the hat). BOW Knit 4 rows in garter stitch. Using size US 6 needles, CO 6 sts. Increase row : K2, YO, K1, YO, K1, YO, K2. 9 sts on needles. next row :P across, P all YO (from previous row) TBL. Knit next 36 rows in garter stitch (K one row, P one row). Decrease row : K2, (K2TOG) 3 times, K1. 6 sts remaining. Knit 5 rows in garter stitch. Increase row : K2, YO, K1, YO, K1, YO, K2. 9 sts on needles. next row : P all sts, P all YO (from previous row) TBL Knit 36 rows in garter stitch. Decrease row : K2, (K2TOG) 3 times, K1. 6 sts remaining. Knit 2 rows in garter stitch. BO all sts. Sew edges together, then fold the bow in half by placing seam in the middle of the bow on the WS. Weave bow in a loop on the side of the hat. Sew bow in place with several unobtrusive sts. Blocking is not necessary.
