1. INTRODUCTION Tabriz town is a growing city of 1.2 million inhabitants. An extensive mobility plan has been developed in order to check the road congestion. This plan suggests the middle term creation of an underground mass transit network made of 4 lines. Tabriz s Long Term Urban Rail Network will feature 4 lines as fallow: Line 1: TURL1 starts from ElGoli and terminates in the Laleh district. It will pass underneath the historical city centre, as well as a number of important archaeological sites, amongst which is the Kaboud Mosque. Line1 is under construction; approximately 18km long with 18 stations. Line 2: According to preliminary studies of TURL2, it had to be started from Baghmishe & terminated at Gharamalek on Railway station. This line had been originally designed with 14 stations and 3 main interchange stations with an approximate length of 13.5km. But after complementary studies, this line extended to Kood_Ali Company from west side and to Tabriz International Exhibition from east side. Therefore the line has 22.4 Km long and 20 Stations. Basic design of Line2 has just been finished. Line 3: According to preliminary studies of TURL3, it had to be started from Azerbaijan square and terminated at Emam_Khomeini stadium; Approximately 10km long with 11 stations. But after complementary studies, this line extended to Tabriz Airport from north side and to Tabriz Urban Bus Terminal from south side. Therefore the line has 15 Km long and 14 Stations. Preliminary studies of the line are also being performed. Line 4: TURL4 will form loop around the city centre; and considering that the passenger capacity of this line is less than passenger capacity of metro lines, it is probable that this line is not implemented underground; leveled or elevated constructions are under discussion and there are different choices for the rolling stock of this line. 3

Preliminary traffic studies are performed, the corridor is finalized, basic studies are being started and the system type is not selected yet. The images below present TURO s long term vision for 4 metro lines within Tabriz s urban city fabric. 4 metro lines of Tabriz city 4

The following picture shows the general route which TURL3 will follow, within Tabriz s urban city fabric. As mentioned, there will be probable extensions to this line: TURL3 within Tabriz s urban city fabric 5

3. REGIONAL GEOLOGY Tabriz Urban Railway Organization Geomorphology of the project region is formed under the effect of tectonical forces, faults, folds and erosion. The North Tabriz fault is located between North Mountains and Tabriz plain. There are many minor faults located at the southern portion of the Tabriz city. Erosion and sedimentation are the main factors, affecting the outcrop of the region. Mehran River (Ghoorichay) is one of the most important rivers of the region, which is 200 to 300 meters apart from the investigated corridor, which meet the TURL2 at the Ghaari Bridge. Mehranrood River, which originates from the east and south east of Tabriz, meets Ajee Chay River at the west end of Tabriz after crossing the city. Generally, Tabriz city is located in Ajeechay River basin. The average elevation of Tabriz from the free sea level is 1340m. The city is surrounded by Oon- Ebn-e-Ali mountain chain with East-West trend from the north and the heights of cemented alluviums and conglomerate which reaches heights of Sahand volcanic mountain from the south. The aforesaid east-west heights, has made Tabriz as a wide plain with east-west strike and the elevation variation in most parts of the city is negligible; but the general slope of the plain and therefore the drainage direction is toward the west. The surface of the plain is covered by not cemented alluviums. With regard to hydrogeological context, there are at least two different aquifers. A first (shallow) aquifer and a second (deep) aquifer confined by low permeability rock formations. The shallow aquifer is located in the alluvium quaternary deposits which have a permeability grade dependent by the granulometric characteristics of the ground. The deep aquifer is located in permeable rock formations such as sandstones and conglomerates and confined by low permeability rock formations as marlstone and claystone. In local areas the two aquifers may be hydraulically connected. 01

3.1 Geotechnical conditions Tabriz Urban Railway Organization At the moment, the ground geotechnical conditions along the proposed alignment have not been investigated, but a site investigation and laboratory testing program(phase 1) will be perform to characterize the Site soils in order to develop geotechnical parameters for design and construction of the project. based on this program 33 boreholes and 13 trial pits will drilled especially on stations location and occasionally along line section between them. The distance between boreholes is about 400 meter and their depths vary from 40 meter for those on the route of the tunnel to 60 at stations location. On the basis of investigation results for lines 1 and 2 and expert judgement, in southern part of the project the tunnel and stations are expected to be excavated in alluvial deposits, whereas in northern part is expected to encounter the boulders with various dimension and even the bed rock. The mass rock encountered has poor resistance quality being the alteration of sedimentary rocks. Also, Most of the TURL3 tunnel will be below water table. Moreover the tunnel boring mashie has to be pass through materials that exhibits sticky behavior. According to geotechnical investigation, for line 2 in some parts, the rock material along the alignment shall be abrasive and it is possible to see the clay present in the soil and above all in the bedrock (claystone and marlstone tends to be illites. This kind of mineral shall have swelling behavior. 00
