Course: 7 th Grade Math DETAIL LESSON PLAN Friday, February 10 / Monday, February 13 Student Objective (Obj. 4b) TSW get extra practice finding the perimeter and area of triangles and quadrilaterals using formulas. Lesson 8-1 Perimeter Textbook Pages: 374-378 8-2, 8-3, 8-4 Area Textbook Pages: 380-392 8-5 Circles Textbook Pages: 394-397 Homework Test next class on perimeter and area. Complete study guide. Last Night s Homework Perimeter/Area Worksheet (Berg created, 5 problems) Bellwork Get your calculator and green quick notes. Study guide problem numbers: 3, 4, 9, 11, 12 Prior Knowledge Review answers to bellwork. Review last night s homework. Over the last couple of days, we have learned to classify different types of quadrilaterals. We also learned how to find the perimeter and area of different shapes. Anticipatory Set Today, will get extra practice on these skills. What is perimeter? Answer: The distance around a shape. It s the outside edge. Can you name a real life situation of where you would use or see perimeter? Hint: Think of the images Mrs. Berg displayed during class. Answer: The rod iron fence around the white house. Soldiers guard the perimeter to keep the fort inside safe! We saw advertisements for the hidden dog fence company. There was a fence called the perimeter loop. We also saw an advertisement for a security fence for a nuclear power plant. What is the area? Answer: It is the region inside a shape. Can you name a real life situation of where you would use or see area? Hint: Think of the PowerPoint Mrs. Berg showed during class. Answer: The news reports areas of disaster all the time: Oklahoma F5 Tornado, Detectives tape off areas of a crime scene, Exxon Valdez and Gulf Coast oil spill, Hurricane Katrina, and the earthquake in Haiti. Now let s take a look at find the area of something called an irregular figure. Teacher Input Explain and demonstrate how to find the area of an irregular figure. Do the dum-dum challenge activity to music. Review sheet problem # 16. Discuss strategies for solving reading problems involving perimeter and area. Demonstrate using review sheet problem #1. Classwork: Math to music. Students will work the perimeter/area reading problem challenge sheet. (independently) Extra Practice: Students may complete their study guide for test. Piet Mondrian coloring sheet if time! Assessment Observation and questioning. Major test on area next class. Closure Today, we have review how to find the area and perimeter of different shapes. We used a strategy to solve readings involving area and perimeter. What key questions do we ask ourselves in this strategy? 1) What are they asking you to find? (Perimeter, Circumference, or Area) 2) What is your shape? 3) If the shape is a circle, are you given a diameter or radius? 4) Based on the above answers pick the correct formula and solve!!!

What is a composite figure? It s a figure that is divided into more than one of the basic shapes. We often refer to these figures as Irregular figures. Sometimes there is no easy formula that will give you the area of a figure. There are 2 types of composite figure: 1. A shape inside of a shape 2. Connecting shapes 11 ft 12 ft 8 ft 11 ft 5 ft 3 ft

Shape Inside of a Shape! Shape inside a Shape What is the area of the shaded region of the following figure? Step 1: Identify the figures in the composite figure. Step 2: Find the area of each figure. Step 3: Subtract the smaller area from the larger area. A circular garden is surrounded by a cement path as shown in the following diagram. What is the area of the area of the cement path? 11 ft Area of square = 121 Area of circle = 50.24 8 ft 11 ft Total Area = 70.76

Shapes that Connect! You might need to determine the area of a composite figure in order to carpet a room. What is the area of the below figure? Step 1: Draw lines to separate the figure into common figures. Step 2: Find the area of each figure. Step 3: Add the area of each figure. 1) Use what you know about the area of shapes to find the area of this complex shape! 5 ft 12 ft 3 ft Area of Rectangle = 60 Area of Triangle = 7.5 Total Area = 67.5

If the radius of the pool is 15 ft, what is the circumference? 2) Find the area of this shape! 9 in 6 in 21 in 3) A bicycle racing track is called a velodrome. If a velodrome is perfectly round, with a diameter of 500 meters, what is its circumference? 4) Find the perimeter of the figure shown. 8 in 8 in 7 in. 9 in 5) A triangular room has a base of 20 ft and a height of 13 ft. What is the area? 6) An equaliteral triangle has sides 4.6 cm long. What is the perimeter?

7) The Smith s love to spend time outside as a family in the summertime. They have decided to build an in ground rectangular shaped swimming pool in their backyard. The length of the pool will be 36 feet and the width of the pool will be 16 feet. Calculate the perimeter of the Smith s new pool. 8) A playground has the shape of a parallelogram. If the base is 30 ft, and the corresponding height is 25 ft, what is its area? 9) A carpenter has blueprints for a wooden triangular patio. The base is 5 m and the height is 7 m. What is the area of the patio? 10) Find each area for a triangle with base b and height h. a) b = 7 cm, h = 12 cm b) b = 100 m, h = 3.6 m 11) Find the Circumference of the following figure. 8 cm 12) Tony had trouble making all the large pizzas the same size. The largest pizza that would fit in the box would have a diameter of 16 inches. What would the circumference be? 13) The world s largest hula-hoop has a diameter of 16 feet. a) What is the area inside the hula-hoop? b) What is the circumference around the hula-hoop?

14) The diagram below shows the shape of Brian s bedroom. What is the perimeter around Brian s bedroom? Hint: Determine the missing side lengths. Then, be careful to add up every single side to get your answer. 15) Find the area of each parallelogram or trapezoid. a) Parallelogram: base = 10 m, height = 4 m b) Trapezoid: height = 4 mi, base = 5 mi, base = 8 mi 16) a) Find the area of this irregular figure: b) What is the area of the shaded region?
