As soon as you cut the mirror there is an exposed edge which can come into contact with various corrosive agents. Ammonia in glass cleaner, the acid in flux & patina, even the adhesive backing on the copper foil may corrode the mirrored back. If you make a stained glass project with mirror, you must protect the edge with a sealant. Professional mirror edge sealant and silver protectors are readily available (Section G - Supplies). However, a good quality varnish, unbleached shellac or even clear nail polish will do in a pinch. (Please be advised that these materials were NOT developed to act as mirror edge sealants, they should only be used in small projects or emergency situations.) Be sure to coat all exposed edges before foiling or leading and always use a non-acid flux while soldering near that sensitive mirrored surface.
