Write a Novel - First Inspiration to Final Edit Then Submission! with C.C. Humphreys Have you got a book in you? Have you always wanted to get it out into the world but lacked the confidence? Then join award-winning, bestselling author and Salt Spring resident Chris (C.C.) Humphreys, for a one-day writing workshop that will help you banish the critic, release your creativity, and introduce you to the secrets of novel construction, character development and sheer storytelling fun. With plenty of exercises to get the fingers and brain moving, and a step by step analysis of what makes a successful, exciting piece of fiction, participants will leave the workshop with the beginnings of a novel and a road map to help you finish it. Or if you have a piece that has sat in a drawer for years, Chris will show you how to regain your faith in it, and take it to the next level maybe even all the way to publication. Subjects will include: the separate stages of writing - from first idea to final edit; how to create great characters; plotting; editing; dialogue; the synopsis, the pitch and how to land a publisher. Come for a day of fun and hard work: it s time the world heard your story! Workshop is in the TBA room on Thursday, August 10 from 9 AM 4:30 PM, with a break for lunch between 12 1 PM. While lunch is not provided, many attendees will be discussing the workshop over lunch at the Boomtown Pub (connected to the hotel). A workshop fee of CDN $40 is requested to reserve your seat. Bring a notepad or lap top to take notes. Chris (C.C.) Humphreys is a playwright, actor, fight choreographer and novelist, with ten adult novels and five young adult novels. His recent novel Plague won Canada's Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Novel in 2015. The sequel, Fire is a thriller set during the Great Fire, published Summer 2016. What Publishers Want - And Authors Need with Sam Hiyate Today s literary marketplace remains a mystery to up-and-coming writers. Often they ask themselves, what do I do next? How do I write a query letter that will stand out? What are editors really looking for? Most importantly, how do I know that my work is ready to be submitted? Agent Sam Hiyate will examine the publishing world in Canada, the U.S. and international markets in this one-day workshop. What are the market s needs, wants, trends and must haves? How can you as a writer target your submission to get the attention of an editor or agent? What are the best ways to improve your chances of getting published? Sam will examine the reasons submissions get published, and top reasons most never make it out of the slush pile. Learn about the publishing world and its trends in this invaluable workshop aimed at helping you understand what the market wants. Praise for What Publishers Want: "I can t remember a more enjoyable and informative presentation. Sam's stories from the world of publishing vividly illustrated his points. His ability to focus on each person s work and rearrange elements showed directorial genius I am very glad I attended and look forward to querying Sam when I am further along in [my writing]. Workshop will be held in the TBA room on Thursday, August 10 from 9 AM 4:30 PM, with a break for lunch between 12 1 PM. While lunch is not provided, many attendees will be discussing the workshop over lunch at the Boomtown Pub (connected to the hotel). A workshop fee of CDN $40 is requested to reserve your seat.
