Basecoat slate surface with black chalkboard paint, following the instructions on the package. Basecoat the insert Titanium White, dry, sand and wipe away grit. Use the transfer paper as needed for transferring design line work. Painting Instructions: Sky: Double load the size 12 Shader with Sapphire and Titanium White, beginning at the top with Sapphire. Keep colors blended with more Titanium White to lighten toward the horizon. Touch brush corner in Titanium White to paint ribbon clouds using little paint and a light touch. 1

Water: Double load the size 12 Shader with Sapphire and Titanium White, begin with Sapphire where the water meets the horizon. Keep colors blended and pull Titanium White for waves using the brush on the chisel edge. Sand Dunes: Double load the size 12 Shader with Fawn and Antique White; paint the sand keeping the Antique White to the top of the strokes. Touch the chisel edge in Light Buttermilk to highlight the tops of the dunes. Blend in any of these colors for sand as preferred. The sand will be touched up as details are added. Cottage: Basecoat the cottage with Slate Green using the size 8 Shader. Touch the edge of a size 2 Shader in Eggshell and pull up for the shingles. Drybrush edges of the shingles with Light Buttermilk. Double load the size 2 Shader with Graphite and Titanium White, paint the narrow roof line. Double load the size 8 Shader with the roof colors and paint the large section of roof; highlight the front edge with Titanium White. Paint the porch roof with Graphite using the size 8 Shader, and highlight the edge with Titanium White. Double load the size 8 Shader with Graphite and Titanium White and paint the windows. Double load the size 10/0 Liner with Slate Green and Titanium White; paint the porch trim, window sills and window panes. Paint the shutters Blue Haze Light using the size 2 Shader. Double load the size 10/0 Liner with Hauser Dark Green and Wasabi Green and dot for window box foliage; repeat with a double load of Antique Rose and Titanium White to dot flowers. Double load the size 2 Shader with Slate Green and Titanium White, and paint the door. Paint the window and trim on the door the same as for the windows. Dot door handle and line the hinges with Graphite. Repeat the colors and directions for the flower box to paint the rose vine on the porch pillar. Fence: Double load the size 10/0 Liner with Fawn and Titanium White, and paint the sea fence. Double load the 10/0 Liner with Soft Black and Titanium White to paint the wire. Clothesline: Mix equal parts of Soft Black and Sapphire to a dark grey; double load with Titanium White on the size 10/0 Liner; paint the poles. Double load the size 10/0 Liner with Graphite and Titanium White to paint the clothesline. The beach towels can be painted just about any color with any design. I chose the following, working from right to left: the first towel is painted Blue Harbor and highlighted with Titanium White; the stripes are Titanium White; the second towel is painted with a double load of Antique Rose and Titanium White, and the dots are colors from the palette; the third towel is painted with a double load of Hauser Dark Green and Wasabi Green, use a size 10/0 Liner and Moon Yellow to paint mini lines for sunflower petals and dot the centers of each with True Ochre; the last towel is painted Moon Yellow and shaded by blending with True Ochre, 2

stripes are Antique Rose. Double load the size 10/0 Liner with Fawn and Soft Black and paint the clothespins. Paint the towels in the basket with Blue Harbor, Antique Rose and Moon Yellow, all are highlighted with Titanium White. Rowboat: Mix equal amounts of Sapphire and Soft Black to a dark grey. Double load this color with Titanium White on a size 4 Shader and paint the rowboat. Shade the inside of the boat and to to define the seat with the Sapphire Soft Black mix. Highlight the top edges of the boat with Titanium White. Use the size 8 Shader double loaded with Light Buttermilk and Antique White and pull sand along the side and back of the rowboat. Seagrass: Use the size 10/0 Liner and Hauser Dark Green and Wasabi Green lightened with Moon Yellow to paint the seagrass. Gulls: Paint the gulls Titanium White with the size 10/0 Liner and tip the ends of the wings with Graphite. Sailboat: Paint the sailboat Titanium White and shade with a wash of Blue Harbor. Line the pole with Fawn and paint the flag with Antique Rose. Lettering: Transfer the lettering to the slate surface using White Graphite Paper, and paint the letters with Titanium White using the size 0 Liner. Finishing: Apply one or two coats of varnish to the frame, top bar, and insert (keeping the varnish off of the slate surface).
