About the Pilot

Motivation for participating in this pilot. Earlier using traditional paper based model for data collection Limitations: time consuming ( a few months before data is available) Shipping questionnaires Monitoring Explore new approaches for data collection in keeping with the technology The pilot gave us very good opportunity to test the new approach (local E enumerator model using tablet based application) This was a new experience for the team to work with innovative solutions to data collection.

Proposed approach for this pilot. Research Design Sampling methodology and data collection tools (questionnaire) Mobile app and dashboard customization For collection of field data Field data collection Using E enumerator Data management Data cleaning and analysis Admin panel/ Dashboard Reviewing progress and quality of data Server Synchronisation and storage of data

What were the innovative features of this approach from your perspective? Offline data collection Recording of GPS coordinates Timing of the data collection Customization of questionnaire for other studies Real time monitoring of field work

Self-evaluate the implemented approach Criteria Cost effectiveness Accuracy of data collection Efficiency Commercially scalable Validation survey reports Evaluation Almost 50 percent reduction in costs of data collection Error in data collection is minimized. Time for data processing reduced very much. The app is very much scalable commercially. To be discussed by MSU.

Beyond this pilot, what is your experience/ record in applying/using this approach for technology adoption (or other type of) data collection, and who are your major clients? Our experiences in agriculture data collection using this approach was vs We are now working to digitize our data collection operations. Future studies will be done using tablet based application.

Traditional versus ICT Based Approaches In the new approach we have to keep the questionnaire SIMPLE and SMALL Earlier questionnaires used to be very long (CCAFS 65 page) Had room for calculations Complicated questionnaires through this approach WTP, experimental approach With digitization, if we go too much into the remote mode of data collection, the downside is loosing the context of the field situation In terms of sampling, to reduce the sampling bias in the ICT based approach we can do a two stage selection first collect information about the population and then select the HHs based on the information in the first round of ICT based data collection To overcome the problem of electricity, we used power banks
