INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION TC106 Overview Assessment of Human exposure to EMF FR-PM-1-7 ACEC Update Chair: Mike Wood Copyright IEC, Geneva, Switzerland

TC106 What s New Strong IEC / IEEE Collaboration Continues 3 New Joint Work Groups (IEC/IEEE) JWG11 5G computation JWG12-5G measurement JWG13 - SAR Wireless Power Transfer TR published & new Project IS team commenced 5G Device Measurement TR approved 2018 Meetings 2

TC106 Overview Purpose : To prepare international standards on measurement and calculation methods to assess human exposure to electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields (0 Hz to 300 GHz). note: establishment of exposure limits is excluded Strategic Business Plan The TC106 Strategic Business Plan to 2020 will deliver standards for 5G, the Internet of Things, Wire Power Transfer and a truly connected world. Market relevance TC106 standards will touch nearly every aspect of the domestic, industrial, consumer and business world by 2020 making our SBP very important to ensure we deliver efficient compliance assessment standards for the future technologies 3

TC106 Key Themes & Initiatives Key themes & initiatives To ensure TC106 continues to deliver quality standards in a timely and efficient manner, the chairman introduced 3 key themes as a focus to help guide the new work program. 1. Developing new ideas and initiatives in TC106 2. The need for efficiency and speed to market for standards development 3. Collaboration and fostering new talent in TC106 TC106 is also participating in the IEC Young Professionals development program Young Professionals are tomorrow s leaders, and it s vital that we actively encourage young engineers to be part of the IEC standardisation work in our TC 106 teams 4

Overview TC106 5G & mmwave Technology Given the rapid development of the 5G technology, it is recognised that compliance assessment procedures will be required before the 5G technology specifications from 3GPP are finalised in 2020. IEC 62209-1 covers the frequency range 300 MHz to 6 GHz for SAR assessments from devices. A new standard for device compliance assessment is required for the mmwave frequencies that will be used by 5G Strategy - To achieve this, TC106 agreed on the following strategy Technical Report in 2017 that specifies the generic high level measurement requirements for devices. - this is completed publication 2018 Full International Standard by 2020 for devices using the Technical Report as the starting point. Networks and Base Stations the revised 62232 ED2 extends to 100GHz, and MT3 will prepare a TR with 5G case studies demonstrating assessments 6

TC106 Supporting Young Professionals Summary 2017/18 activities Young Professionals are tomorrow s leaders, and it s vital that we actively encourage young engineers to be part of the IEC standardisation work in our TC 106 teams. In 2017 TC 106 continued the active participation in the IEC Young Professionals Program in Vladivostok where we assisted the YP s running mock TC meetings, reviewing NC comments on draft standard and reaching consensus on difficult clauses, panel sessions on standards development, and how TC s and Working Groups really operate. In 2018 TC106 will partner with the YP program to provide practical experience in a Technical Committee working on future technologies. We will invite the YP s to connect with our experts on the 5G program and invite YP s to attend the June meetings in Europe. We will also present and share our work during the year to YP forums, and again assist with the new YP program in October YP s in 2017 challenged the IEC SMB to have an open door policy TC106 embraced this at Plenary 7
