The New Orleans Chapter of AADE donated $20,000 in December 2010 to the Craft and Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering at LSU for the Well Control Teaching Laboratory Support Fund. AADE s intentions are to support the local universities by helping produce graduates for the Petroleum Industry. It seems fitting that AADE could provide some financial support directly into well control training, especially after last year s GOM tragedy. These funds are dedicated to supporting PETE 4060 Well Control Lab classes for the Spring and Spring Intersession of 2011. There is a total of 77 students who will take and complete the lab this year. There was a higher than usual number of students that needed to take this course. Extra lab sessions were needed to allow more students to take the senior drilling class next fall and graduate in a timely manner. The extra sessions of the PETE 4060 lab also create additional part time jobs for PETE Seniors who serve as assistant lab instructors. AADE received the following note from L.S.U.: Your support is instrumental in helping to fund the unique, full-scale activities in this lab, in keeping the lab sections small enough to be effective, and in having knowledgeable instructors to teach them. Examples of the impact of that support include all of the spring sections having already seen a gas kick circulated out from a 6000 well, which they will do it themselves later in the semester and each of the students operating the choke and then the pump during a pump start up beginning this week. Your continued cooperation and support is very much appreciated, John Rogers Smith, P.E., Ph.D. Associate Professor Craft and Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering Louisiana State University
