A Research and Innovation Center
SRI: A Nonprofit Research Institute Innovations from SRI International have created lasting benefits to society touching our lives every day. SRI is a critical bridge between fundamental research and its application to real-world challenges. Our mission is discovery and the application of science and technology for knowledge, commerce, prosperity, and peace. At SRI, we move research beyond the laboratory and into solutions that enhance people s lives, provide life-saving advances in medicine and health care, promote better educational outcomes, and contribute to our national security. We solve today s challenges, and as an independent, nonprofit research institute, we have the freedom to focus on long-term solutions that can have a positive impact on the world. SRI is an innovation engine with a mission driven to make an impact, designed to succeed. SRI led one of the world s largest artificial intelligence projects, the Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes (CALO), to revolutionize how computers support decision-makers. Under this five-year, $150 million Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) effort, SRI orchestrated 300 researchers from 22 organizations to create a voice-activated system that answered users queries and performed tasks like a human. The project inspired Siri, an SRI spin-off designed to bring virtual personal assistants to consumers. Apple purchased Siri in 2010 for use in its iphone. The technology is also used in the Army s Command Post of the Future and by other SRI ventures such as Trapit and Tempo. Revolutionizing Robotics, Material Handling, and Automation. When DARPA asked for a device that can climb a wall regardless of texture or condition, SRI s team of researchers developed a robot that utilizes electroadhesion. The same technology is now entering industry through Grabit, an SRI start-up. Grabit is developing advanced electroadhesion techniques for a wide range of robotics, material handling, and industrial automation applications.

The SRI Five Disciplines of Innovation At SRI, the way we work is our most important innovation. Innovation is more than new ideas, devices, or methods it s a discipline with an unrelenting focus on customer needs. We define innovation as the creation and delivery of new customer value into the marketplace, with a sustainable business model for the enterprise producing it. That s why at SRI, we subject new ideas and projects to a rigorous set of criteria to reduce risk and keep us on track for success for our clients and partners. We call the process the SRI Five Disciplines of Innovation, which ensure we solve our clients most difficult challenges while creating real value in the marketplace over time. SRI s innovation process is infused throughout the organization, guiding our approach to every scientific, engineering, technological, and policy challenge. It drives our teams to collaborate, to solve today s challenges with an eye toward the future, and to pursue new insights for compelling solutions. It s a means, not an end, for meeting specific, quantified, market-driven needs.
What Sets SRI Apart Nonprofit research institutes play an essential and unique role in R&D seldom filled by universities, national laboratories, or industry. And SRI s commitment to and success in bringing the results of our R&D into the world sets SRI apart from other research enterprises. Important Problems. Unlike a for-profit commercial enterprise driven by quarterly metrics or shareholder value, SRI is driven to seek breakthrough solutions to big, important problems, and to create lasting value for our clients and the world. Independent Partner. As an independent organization, our clients know us as a trusted partner, providing unbiased approaches and solutions. Every project meets a discrete need with a defined outcome or deliverable. Tangible Results. While think tanks shape policy and consult, SRI does more: we conduct hands-on R&D in our labs, test developments in the field, and bring tangible solutions, systems, and products to market. High-Value Innovation. SRI s unique process for creating value, our Five Disciplines of Innovation, is designed to make success practically inevitable. We partner closely with clients to understand fundamental needs, develop key insights, and cocreate approaches that deliver high-value benefits. Multidisciplinary Collaboration. SRI excels at collaborating across boundaries, assembling the skills needed for the challenge at hand. In contrast to universities, SRI s practitioners are wholly focused on R&D for real innovation in the operating room, in the classroom, on the battlefield, and in the marketplace. Customer Focus. SRI competes project by project, each and every time, to win sponsorship through contracts and grants from our clients and partners unlike national laboratories and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers, which receive appropriated federal funds. These strengths mean that SRI can attract the best talent and partners in its fields of R&D, has the capabilities to move from basic research to product development, and has the opportunity to commercialize its intellectual property for widespread use to make a difference in the world. The Essential Role of Research Institutes R&D is at the heart of what has made the United States the global leader in science, technology, security, and innovation. As much as 85 percent of U.S. GDP growth is attributed to advancements in science and technology. The achievements of SRI and other nonprofit research institutes require a strong government commitment. Without such sustained support, the nation faces a significant challenge to its economic, technological, and scientific leadership. Even though scientific discoveries and technology developments have been the springboard for entire industries, U.S. government science and technology budgets in particular have stagnated in the face of fiscal realities. And financial pressures are pushing industry to bring products to market faster and faster, squeezing internal R&D resources. As a result, nonprofit research institutes are more important than ever as they pursue breakthroughs and new solutions, and bridge research and its application to real-world challenges.
LEGACY OF INNOVATION SRI s contributions include dozens of world-changing innovations. Many have been disruptive to an entire field of science or business and have been widely adopted around the globe.
