Royal System (1948) Designed by Poul Cadovius INSTALLATION GUIDE
ROYAL SYSTEM Congratulations on your new furniture from dk3. The Royal System bookcase was designed in 1948 by legendary Danish designer and manufacturer Poul Cadovius. It was one of the world s first wall-hung furniture systems, and there have been many attempts to copy it, but Royal System remains the original. At dk3, we create unique furniture that is shaped by nature and processed by true enthusiasts with a focus on personality and sustainability. The love of the organic materials and an uncompromising approach to quality are present throughout the process. Those characteristics come through from design and construction to surface treatment and polishing, all from our facilities in Denmark.
INSTALLATION GUIDE The Royal System can be mounted on many different wall surfaces as long as they are sturdy enough to support the shelving. The screws provided are intended for mounting the rails directly onto wooden studs set 16" on center in standard walls. If you intend to mount the rails on concrete, brick, hollow block or other materials, you will need to obtain appropriate mounting systems. The installation should be performed by a qualified professional owing to the system s size and weight, which require precision and experience to achieve a good and safe result. CONTENTS 1. ROYAL 200cm (78.5") RAILS Each solid wood rail includes 5 screws. (See Installation Guide for note on installing rails.) 2. ROYAL 100cm (39.5") RAILS Each solid wood rail includes 3 screws. (See Installation Guide for note on installing rails.) 3. ROYAL SHELF Each shelf includes 2 shelf supports and 2 shelf brackets. It is extremely important that the wall is sufficiently sturdy to support the system and the items that will be stored on it and that the rails are installed perfectly plumb and parallel to each other. The following tools will be needed: Power drill Screwdriver 6' Level Small Level Tape measure 4. ROYAL CABINET Each cabinet includes 2 support pins. 5. ROYAL DESK SHELF Each desk shelf includes 2 shelf supports, 2 shelf brackets and 2 security brackets. Optional materials: Appropriate hardware if not mounting the system on a traditional stud wall PLEASE NOTE The supplied screws are usable only where the rails of the shelving system will be attached to a wooden stud inside a standard wall.
INSTALLING THE FIRST RAIL The mounting of the first rail in a secure and plumb position is a crucial step in installation. NOTE: The rails of the Royal System are long and narrow and may be slightly curved when unpacked. As part of a correct installation, rails will need to be straightened as they are mounted on the wall. 1. Locate a stud and position first rail directly over it at the desired height. The recommended height of 12" from the floor will suit most applications. 2. Install top screw but do not tighten completely. 3. Using a 6' level, adjust rail to a plumb position, then install bottom screw and tighten top screw that was left untightened in Step 2. Install remaining screws into predrilled holes the length of the rail using the level to keep the rail plumb.
INSTALLING OTHER RAILS Other rails are positioned using the first rail and the included spacer as guides. The system s rails are designed to be spaced 32" apart on center to align with the spacing of every other stud in a standard wall. NOTE: The rails of the Royal System are long and narrow and may be slightly curved when unpacked. As part of a correct installation, the rails will need to be straightened as they are mounted on the wall. 1. Insert one shelf support on the inside of the fixed rail and another on the loose rail into matching hole. 2. Rest the included spacer between the rails on the shelf supports, adjusting the loose rail as necessary until it is tight against the spacer and the spacer is level. 3. Repeat steps 2 and 3 from the previous section, Installing the First Rail.
INSTALLING A SHELF Install shelf supports with the flat side facing upward and the round side facing downward. 1. Insert shelf supports into holes on the insides of the rails. 2. Insert left and right shelf brackets into predrilled slots on the top side of the shelf. 3. Rest shelf on shelf supports installed in Step 1, above. 4. While supporting the shelf by hand, insert hooked ends of shelf brackets into predrilled holes in rails to level the shelf. 5. Make sure the flat side of the shelf supports face upward to ensure proper seating of the shelf, and check that the shelf is securely installed.
INSTALLING A CABINET INSTALLING A DESK SHELF For this purpose the round steel pins are used. 1. Determine desired height of cabinet, and insert steel pins into appropriate holes to a depth of at least 1", one in each adjacent rail. Install shelf supports with the flat side facing upward and the round side facing downward. 1. Insert shelf supports into holes on the insides of the rails. 2. The cabinet will hang on the two pins. 3. Carefully lower the cabinet onto the pins. 2. Insert shelf brackets into predrilled holes on the bottom side of the desk shelf, and secure with provided safety fittings and screws. 4. Be certain the cabinet is seated fully and securely. 3. Rest desk shelf on shelf supports installed in Step 1, above. Insert hooked ends of shelf brackets into predrilled holes in rails to level the shelf. 4. Make sure the desk shelf supports are installed with the flat side facing upward to ensure the shelf seats fully. Install provided screws through predrilled holes in shelf support to secure desk shelf and prevent it from coming off the supports.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE Rails and drawers are made of natural solid wood, which may have a rough surface or may bend with changing humidity. All other wooden parts of the Royal System are veneered. Wood furniture should not be placed near radiators or other heat sources, which can dry out the wood and cause cracking. Do not place hot or humid objects directly on the furniture, which may stain or damage it. In general, keep wood furniture away from direct sunlight, which can darken some woods and fade others. Color changes may also occur when objects are left for extended periods in the same location on the furniture. Maintenance for Royal System in Walnut The Royal System in Walnut has an oiled finish that will occasionally need to be refreshed. For everyday care, use a cloth lightly moistened with clean water. Do not use detergents, which strip the oil from the surface. If the solid wooden rails are scratched, they may be sanded with very fine sandpaper (280 320 grit) and then oiled. Apply oil with a clean cloth and allow it to penetrate the surface for about 15 minutes. Wipe the furniture until the surface is clean and dry. Allow the wood to dry for 12 hours before use. Sanding and oil finishing should always be done in the direction of the wood grain. Maintenance for Royal System in Oak The Royal System in Oak has a soaped finish that will need to be refreshed regularly using soap flakes provided with the system. For everyday care, use a cloth lightly moistened with clean water. To resoap surfaces, it is important that the furniture be treated on all sides to avoid warping. Frequent treatment is recommended. To make a soap solution, combine about 1 cup of soap flakes with 1 quart of boiling water and mix well. Wait until the mixture cools to lukewarm. Apply solution with a cloth. Wipe off excess soap with a clean cloth and let furniture dry. GENERAL INFORMATION Never pour oil, soap or water directly onto the furniture surface. Always use a cloth dampened with the substance being applied. Treat all sides of the wood, and always work in the direction of the grain. Do not use detergents. WARNING: RISK OF COMBUSTION! Cloths used for oil treatment present a serious risk of combustion if not disposed of properly.
