Biographical Sketch Lin Oliver was born in Los Angeles, California in 1947. Oliver owes her writing career to winning a first grade poetry contest. It was that first big moment that inspired her to take up writing. Oliver attended college at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of California, Berkeley where she decided to major in English. Wanting to impact the government through protest, Oliver became a political activist, in college. She participated in a number of sit-ins and peace marches. After graduating from college, Oliver decided to teach high school. However, her teaching career was to last only one semester. Realizing she did not enjoy the profession, she quit her job. Soon after, Oliver began writing educational books for children. In 2002, Oliver collaborated with the famous actor, Henry Winkler, to publish their first book in the Hank Zipzer: World s Best Underachiever series. The book series was created to show children that they can learn to overcome difficulties. Oliver wanted the main character, Hank, to have a likeable personality and to be a funny character that the kids would enjoy. Since then, 18 books have been added to the series and over 4 million copies have been sold worldwide. Oliver has written other books which include, Who Shrunk Daniel Funk, Sound Bender, and The Shadow Mask. Almost Identical, another book by Oliver, was written in collaboration with her son, Theo Baker. Aside from writing children s books, Oliver has produced, directed, and written many screen plays for film and television based on children s books. Some of her film work includes that for the films, The Trumpet of the Swan, Harry and the Hendersons, and the television show Wayside. Oliver is the co-founder and Executive Director of The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, an organization of more than 22,000 members worldwide, participating in over 80 regional chapters. Lin Oliver currently resides in Los Angeles, California with her husband Alan Baker and their dog Dexter Duncan Baker. Lin Oliver Papers, ANC00039, page 2
