Bush ran against Democrat Michael Dukakis from Massachusetts III. Bush easily won the election in 1988 promising to keep Reagan s social, political and economic policies in place A. Most famously Bush promised the American people NO NEW TAXES

H.W. BUSH ADMINISTRATION I. The Persian Gulf War: A. In August of 1990 Saddam Hussein (the leader of Iraq) claimed the nation of Kuwait belonged to Iraq B. Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990 beginning the Persian Gulf War C. In January 1991 President H.W. Bush launched Operation Desert Storm to free Kuwait fro Iraqi control D. The U.S. bombed Iraqi forces and then led a massive ground invasion to take back Kuwait E. A cease-fire announced on February 28, 1991. Kuwait was liberated. F. Saddam Hussein was left in control of Iraq (not great for the U.S.)

However an economic recession began in 1990 and Bush was forced to raise taxes. (which he promised to not do) A. American people are unhappy with Bush for lying & taxes C. Unemployment & poverty rose during the Bush years and many Americans grew unhappy with his leadership

The recession in the early 90s forced Bush to raise taxes leading to a large drop in his approval rating C. 12 years of Republican leadership came to an end in 1992 D. During the Clinton administration the U.S. successfully balanced the budget and the federal govt. had a surplus first time in 30 years C. Unemployment fell, the stock market rose & fewer people relied on public aid D. NAFTA was created to strengthen economies of Canada, US and Mexico i. North American Free Trade Agreement ii. iii. Allows goods to moved between US + Mexico + Canada without paying tariffs or taxes US can get goods cheaply from Mexico including food & cars

Liberal vs. Conservative C. The Monica Lewinsky scandal then led to Clinton being impeached i. Clinton lied under oath about having sexual relations with an intern D. Senate did not get two-thirds majority to convict Clinton and remove him from office

Islamic Fundamentalist terrorists from Al-Qaeda flew 2 planes into the World Trade Center in NYC, 1 into the Pentagon in Washington DC and one crashed outside of Philadelphia B. Osama bin Laden the leader of Al-Qaeda planned the attacks and roughly 3,000 Americans were killed in the worst attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor C. The Bush administration increased antiterrorism measures i. US forces went to Afghanistan to get rid of terrorism & still there today!!!! ii. The US joined the War on terror nations fighting to rid the world of terrorist cells
