4 Podcasts What are they? A podcast is audio broadcast converted to an MP3 file or other audio file format for playback in a digital music player. Many podcasts are played on a regular computer The original idea was to listen to a podcast on a portable device; hence, the "pod" name from "ipod." Although podcasts are mostly verbal, they may contain music, images and video. 5 Podcasts What are they? Podcasting involves the recording of audio and /or video programs. Recordings are available for download to itunes & can be synched to your ipod or other portable digital audio device. Advantage of a podcast: The user can listen to the podcast away from your computer and/or at a different time than the original broadcast. 6 What makes the mp3 a Podcast? When the audio file is included into an RSS feed that to which a user can subscribe by using a feed aggregator to scan the feed, look for, and download the audio file. The aggregator downloads the latest audio file available in the feed to your computer into your itunes music player/windows Media Player library.
7 What is RSS? RSS is most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video in a standardized format. An RSS document is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel". 8 What is RSS? Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. Web feeds benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software (RSS reader, feed reader, or aggregator) which can be webbased, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. 9 What is RSS? The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

13 Finding Educational Podcasts Open itunes. Click the link along the left to get to the itunes Store. 14 Finding Educational Podcasts The quickest way to locate educational podcasts is to use the drop-down menu from the Podcasts link in the main menu at the top of the window: 15 Finding Educational Podcasts The drop-down menu will display the many categories of podcast programs in itunes. Choose the Education link.
16 Finding Educational Podcasts The next window will display icons and titles of Educational Podcasts. * Choose to view ALL, only AUDIO, or only VIDEO podcasts. 17 Finding Educational Podcasts This menu will appear at the top of each page while you are browsing for podcasts. Use the Back/Forward control to move back and forth between screens. 18 Previewing Educational Podcasts Browse the titles. When you see one that looks interesting, click either on the pictures or the title of the podcast. Click the picture to go to a web preview.
19 Previewing Educational Podcasts A window similar to this will open: Note all of the information given for the podcast. 20 Is it an Audio or a Video Podcast? Video podcasts will show this symbol: Audio podcasts will not show the symbol. 21 Previewing Educational Podcasts As you pass your mouse over a title, a blue circle appears. Click the blue circle with the triangle to Play/Preview the podcast. Notice how the blue circle now has a square in it. This is the Stop button.
22 What can I do when I find one I like? After listening you may decide to Download just one episode --click on the Free button on the right. Share the episode -- click the drop-down triangle to see sharing options Subscribe to the entire podcast series click on the Subscribe Free button under the picture. 23 Subscribing to a Podcast Next, you will see this message. Notice how it tells you that Future episodes will be downloaded automatically as they become available. Click Subscribe. 24 Subscribing to a Podcast The progress of the download is shown at the top of the main window: At the left, in your Library, you will see a spinning arrow indicating a download is in progress.
25 Subscribing to a Podcast When it s finished downloading, click on the Podcast link in your itunes Library and see that it s there. 26 Viewing a Podcast At the left of the itunes window, locate the Podcasts link in your Library. 27 Viewing a Podcast The Play button is at the top left of the window. The Sound control is next to the Play button. The Display control is at the top right. Try each display to see which you prefer. Play Control Sound Control Display Control
28 Viewing a Podcast As you pass your mouse pointer over each picture/icon, a Play Podcast button will appear. Click the Play Podcast button to begin the podcast. 29 Viewing a Podcast The podcast will open in a large viewing window, with a floating control panel in the lower part of the screen. Moving your mouse pointer in/out of the video window will show/hide the control bar. A progress bar will appear at the top of the screen 30 Viewing a Podcast To close the video, move your mouse pointer into the video window. The control panel will appear, and in the top right corner of the window, a white X in a white circle will appear. Click the to close the video window. NOTE: Clicking the in the very top right corner will CLOSE itunes and you will need to restart itunes.

Note the Teaching & Education link. 42 Locating Podcasts in itunes U Another option for finding educational podcasts is to use the itunes U Quick Links located at the right side of the screen.
43 Locating Podcasts in itunes U If you know the name, description or institution of a audio/video podcast, you can use the itunes U Power Search.
