The K-8NGP is a tuned coaxial cable assembly that can only be used with special no-groundplane antennas. This coaxial cable will not work with any standard ground plane dependent CB antenna. We offer it for replacement purposes (in the case of a damaged cable assembly from one of our no-ground-plane kits) or, for those who may be making an NGP kit while using a mount not found in one of our NGP kits. There are four primary components to a NGP antenna system... the NGP antenna, the NGP coaxial cable assembly, the stud mount and the primary mount. The first three items are mandatory. As long as the primary mount has a 1/2- inch (25mm) hole to accept the stud mount, it will suffice. Because the K-8NGP coax contains a tuned circuit, reducing the length of the cable by as little as 1/4-inch (5mm) could render it useless. While there are some cases where the installation may dictate a small reduction in the length of the cable, this must be done carefully and with a degree of knowledge as to what effects on the resonant frequency that reducing the length will have on the assembly. Read Below the article named: ELECTRICALLY LONG NGP ANTENNA SYSTEMS The NGP systems ONLY use the center lead of the coax to feed the antenna. The shield side of the coax is used to form the counterpoise (ground plane) that all transmitting antennas require. Many cables have been ruined by those unfamiliar with NGP systems. They think we made a mistake building the cable assembly so they reprocess the end and render it useless. We recommend that the ring terminal be soldered on instead of crimped (allows easy removal in case that need ever occurs). Stranded center conductor to maximize flexibility and prevent untimely breakage. 100% foil shielding to eliminate leakage. 95% braided copper shielding over the foil for double protection. Polyvinyl center insulation for ruggedness and longevity. Performance that exceeds any similar product. To the novice, one of our NGP antennas may look the same as a standard GP antenna. But, the are never the same. All fiberglass NGP antennas leave the factory with a yellow band near the base. They can also be identified by the length of the close-wound section of the antenna at it's upper end. A table to help differentiate a GP product from an NGP product, based on loading coil length, is posted on our website. This article will be of interest to, and was specifically written for those who have installed a Firestik no-ground-plane ( NGP) antenna system and are faced with an "electrically long" situation after having made the maximum antenna adjustment. Maximum adjustment means that the tuning screw is down as far as it can go, or in the case of wire whip style antennas, the whip has been lowered as far as it can go into the base coil. Unlike non-ngp systems, the length of the NGP coax cable figures into the overall electrical length of the entire system. Accordingly, manipulating the length of the coax can be used to alter the base frequency on electrically long systems. It cannot, however, be used to correct an electrically short NGP antenna system. Before going any further, understand that standing wave ratio (SWR) meters measure everything from the coaxial connector to the tip on the antenna. SWR readings will also reflect antenna environmental conditions, such as metallic objects that are near the antenna, especially if parallel to the antenna mast. When tuning, you are taking everything into account so you should tune the system just as it will exist in actual use. Do not rule out any component or condition. Also keep in mind that the NGP antennas and coax are not interchangeable with non-ngp antennas or coax assemblies. Due to the many conditions that can be encountered, insofar as installation location is concerned, Firestik errs on the safe side when establishing the manufacturing tolerances of the no-ground-plane (NGP) antennas and their matching coaxial cable assembly. In most cases, the antenna has sufficient tuning range to compensate for the variations in over 90% of the installations. Yet, there are exceptions. On some NGP installations the SWR will indicate an "electrically long" condition and the available tuning range of the mechanical antenna adjustment is insufficient to bring the resonant frequency of the system into an acceptable range. For this discussion, it is important that you do not confuse the terms "electrically long or short" and "physically long or short". A physically long or short antenna can very well be electrically short or electrically long when tested. Physical length is something you can measure with a ruler. Electrical length, for the purpose of this discussion, refers to the resonant frequency of the system. An SWR meter is used to determine the electrical length of the system. You cannot guess at what the SWR is on any system: not by how well somebody says you are sounding, not by how well you are hearing someone else. It MUST be measured with an SWR meter. Guessing is a dangerous proposition and will generally result in rendering the coax assembly useless and beyond repair. So, unless you understand the SWR process, you should think twice before you start messing with the coax cable. Proceed with knowledge and with caution. While you do not have to be a rocket-scientist to work the NGP antenna system, you need to understand basic "cause and effect" actions before you strap on your tool belt to go "to fixin' the dern thing". Firestik created and posted an SWR plotting chart that you can print on your printer and use while testing and tuning your antenna system. To determine that an electrically long condition exists, the SWR on CH40 MUST be a higher value than the SWR on CH1. And again, for the purpose of this discussion, the maximum adjustment should have been made via the antenna. SWR on an electrically long installation

will ALWAYS be higher on channel 40 than it will be on channel 1. A plotted SWR curve might look like the following graphic depiction. Keep in mind, for optimum performance across all 40 CB channels, the SWR on CH1 and CH40 will be identical, or very close, usually plus/minus 0.1. Depending upon the installation and the antenna system used, the SWR on your vehicle may vary from that shown on the following chart. Ideally, the CH1 & CH40 SWR will be 2.0:1 or lower across the channels being used. Transmitting on channels where the SWR exceeds 3.0:1 should be avoided to protect the circuits in the CB radio. The following graphic depicts a balanced, 40- channel SWR curve. Coaxial Cable Adjustment If, and only if, your installation meets the "electrically long" criteria, Use the following procedure for adjusting the resonant frequency of the coaxial cable assembly. 1. Disconnect NGP coax from antenna mount. 2. Remove shrink tubing sleeve (if present) from ring terminal end. 3. Unsolder ring terminal - see note "a" below. 4. Measure, from end of wire, ½" (12 mm), cut and dispose of cut-off. 5. Measure, from end, ½" (12 mm) and remove outer coax jacket for distance.

6. Unweave, cut and dispose of braided copper shielding. 7. Unwrap, cut off and dispose of foil shielding. 8. Remove 3/8" (9.5 mm) of center conductor insulation. 9. Lightly twist copper center conductor and pre-tin with solder. 10. Slide new shrink tubing sleeve over coax. 11. Replace or install new ring terminal - solder to coax - see note "b" below. 12. Slide shrink tubing over soldered ring terminal connection. 13. Heat tubing to shrink tight around coax/terminal end. 14. Reconnect coax to mount. 15. Retune the antenna. Notes: a. If the ring terminal was originally crimped to the wire, it will most likely need replaced. b. Soldering creates a better connection for both corrosion resistance and serviceability.

There is a distinct difference. You may not, under any circumstances, interchange Firestik antennas or coax cable assemblies between the two types of systems. It will not work and doing so may damage your radio. Furthermore, you may not use a non- Firestik NGP antenna with a Firestik NGP coax assembly. Firestik NGP systems are unique. You can identify our NGP system in one of two ways. The coax assembly and the antenna itself. The Coax The NGP coax assembly is black with identifying print in silver-grey. Assemblies made before February 2004 are printed with "Fire-Flex" RG-58A/U. Those made after February 2004 are printed with Firestik Super-Shield 50. The connector at the radio end has a soldered tip (not crimped). Also, at the radio end you will find the coax is covered with a piece of black shrink tubing that is about 18 inches (46cm) long. At the mount end of the assembly the center conductor of the coax has been preprocessed and ready to have the ring terminal installed by the user. The braided shield of the coax is not used at the mount end. The Antenna All NGP antennas leave the factory with a yellow band around the antenna just above the base. The heavy-duty fiberglass antennas are referred to as the "FG" series and to the nonexpert eye will appear similar to the standard "FS" (Firestik II) series antennas. The lightduty fiberglass models are referred to as the "LG" series and have a similar appearance to the "FL" (FireFly) series antennas. If the yellow band has been removed, measuring the length of the close wound section (loading coil) of the antenna will help you tell the difference between the NGP antenna and its near counterpart. The following table gives you the length of the close wound section of our antennas. First measure the over all length of the antenna to determine if it is in the 2, 3, 4 or 5 foot range. Next, measure the distance from the top of the antenna (not including the tunable tip mechanism) to the bottom edge of the close wound

section of the antenna. Compare your measurements to the information in the chart below to properly identify the antenna.
