Rudy's ** Removable side panel cover retainer system ** PanelKeeper GL1500 Kit Installs in about 10 minutes per side - No tools required! Both sides included Prevents loss of detachable panels Stop losing expensive side panels and covers Ultra-strong tethers and clips Install once and forget it from then on Detachable connectors included for easy panel removal and re-attachment Won't rust or make noise No holes required 2 Year Materials and Workmanship Warranty! Even the stitching is sealed! Congratulations on the purchase of your new PanelKeeper GL1500 kit. This super strong and easy to install kit will save you countless headaches and money by preventing the unexpected loss of your expensive side covers. The kit is a one time install-and-forget system to provide years of trouble free use for your motorcycle. This particular kit is for the Honda GL-1500 but it can be used on other medium sized ABS panels whose surfaces mate perfectly with the shape of the bases included with this kit. If you need flat bases, or want better panel support, order the SecondBase kit separately for $16.95 plus shipping, per pair. Base shown in picture goes on the inside. It is shown here only for a reference mounting location. Installation: Warning: Successful adhesion is critical. Failure to follow these steps for preparation of the panel to adhere to the special adhesive base to the panel will likely be cause for failure of the adhesive and possible loss of the panel!!! This adhesive is rated at 140 lbs tensile strength and installed temps of -40F to 200F but ONLY if it is installed properly. This VHB adhesive REQUIRES, a perfectly clean, dry, oil-free surface that mates perfectly with 100% of the facing tape surface. Additionally, you only get one chance to place it! It is permanent, so do it right the first time. We will not be responsible for adhesion failure due to improper preparation procedures, from deviations from the outlined in the steps below. Read all directions before starting installation steps. 1. While leaving the adhesive tape cover strips on the base plate, sit the base plate on the inside of the panel with its ridge roughly in-line with the bend in the panel next to the front grommet base (see the photos page for better views of all of these instructions).

2. Slide the base around the surface of the panel until you find the position where the mating surfaces line up with no gaps anywhere and flat. If you need to make some minor changes to the shape of the base plate, you can force bend it slightly. Be careful not to break the base plate. Bending should be limited to about 1 mm or 1/32 of an inch when done. You may need to rotate the plate 180 degrees to get a good fit. Try it both ways. It is intended to have the slightly wider side, be nearest the edge of the panel, bridging the stainless rod over the beginning of the curved portion of the panel. 3. Once the ideal position is determined, use a felt pen or masking tape to mark the exact location where the base will be placed once panel preparation is completed. 4. After marking the location, remove the base plate and remove the paint and primer down to the black ABS surface. Use some 100 grit sandpaper and then finer 240 600 grit and finally using very fine 000 or 0000 steel wool (not included) rub away any paint or other other non-abs contaminants until you are down to the black, shiny ABS surface of the panel. Paint adhesion alone, is not nearly strong enough to be used for this purpose so all paint must be removed in the adhesive mounting landing area. The finished exposed area needs to be smooth, not rough. Take your time with this stage, it can be a chore getting all the paint off. Be sure to protect your painted panel outer side while you do this and support it while using pressure on it to prevent its being cracked. Protecting your panel from damage is your exclusive responsibility and liability so be careful. It is highly recommended that you review the install guide for the LidKeeper Kit that was done by GSMacLean on his site at http://www.goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1112. The base preparation he uses is identical and very clearly done and well explained. 5. Once the steel wool work is finished and the smooth, black ABS plastic is showing, wipe clean the mounting locations with a clean paper towel and some liberal use of Isopropyl Alcohol. From this point forward, DO NOT TOUCH THE CLEANED AREA with your fingers or any other contaminants. 6. Prepare all panels to this point before proceeding as you will be using the supplied 3M Adhesion Promoter packet (one packet will do more up to 4 bases, but it must be used immediately once opened). This enhances the molecular bond for the adhesive base. After the cleaned panel is thoroughly clean and dry, open the supplied 3M packet at the tear point on the package. This will expose the wet sponge inside and allow you to hold it by the packet. Do not get your hands in the liquid. Brush and blot the contents onto the entire area taped off for the base. It does not need to be thick and it should not be outside of the contact area (the tape helps with this). Do both panels and set aside for 10 minutes. Dispose of the packet. 7. When ready to mount the base on the panel, leave the adhesive tape covers on, briefly, and set the base plate on the panel where it will be placed to get a feel for how you will place the base plate when attached to your side cover panel. You will only get 1 chance to attach the base plates! 8. Carefully remove the adhesive cover strips on the base plate. DO NOT TOUCH THE ADHESIVE AREA! The materials and surfaces should be between 60F and 80F ideally. 9. Carefully guide the ABS plastic base to its prepared location marked by your masking taped outline on your panel and press the panel and base firmly together. This will be your permanent

base plate connection and will actually get stronger overnight. If for any reason you ever need to remove the base plate, once attached, please contact us for advice to prevent damage to your side panel. 10. Now we are ready to attach the other end of the strap to your bike frame. Unbuckle the loop ended half of the webbing strap. 11. Feed the end of the webbing with the sewn loop end around whatever point you wish to use for the bike attachment of the kit. I like to use the round tube just under the forward panel mount post or up on the frame under the seat. On the GL1500, it is intended that this be the round frame point where it meets the welded box frame section. But you can place it and move it wherever you prefer. 12. Take the plastic open end of the buckle and feed it through the sewn loop in the same webbing strap and pull tight. If you need a shorter strap, increase the number of wraps around the frame before sticking the buckle through the loop. 13. Snap the buckle ends into each other and tuck the excess underneath the panel and press your panel back in place. That's all there is to it! Now repeat the process on the other side and you are done! See the images on the next page for a better idea about the procedures.

You can get additional adhesion promoter packets from us or automotive supply sources. Please contact us about any questions or problems you may have with your PanelKeeper GL1500 kit installation or operation at support@thefarend.com

Your comments or suggestions are always welcome. We have done our best to make this kit as strong, reliable and easy to install as possible for you. This kit will absolutely prevent the loss of your panels. If you are like me, however, you may not like them banging around in the wind and hanging down, getting your paint scratched and beat up while you get stopped. To prevent this I have designed a supplemental panel rear base kit called SecondBase. It is just like the PanelKeeper but instead of having an angled base, it has a flat base which will work in the rear upper portion of your panel. It can be used for other general purpose tethering on other bikes as well, including all the earlier Goldwing side panels. Think of it this way... the Panel Keeper will protect your panel from loss, while the SecondBase will protect your paint and keep the loose panel from getting beat up in the wind while you stop the bike. To keep costs low, the SecondBase kit does not come with the Adhesion Promoter packet like your PanelKeeper kit does because it is unneeded with the rear strap kit. The PanelKeeper kit is amply strong to handle any load your panels might see. In fact the PanelKeeper kit really does not need the Adhesion Promoter to hold your panels on with but we supply it anyway. If you install both the PanelKeeper and SecondBase kits at the same time, and have all of the base locations prepared properly, your PanelKeeper kit has enough Adhesion Promoter to do all 4 of the base locations. But once the packet is opened, it must be used immediately. The SecondBase kit is available from us directly or on our ebay listing for $16.95 plus $3 shipping to US locations. The PanelKeeper and SecondBase kits are included in the whole bike kit set which is available on ebay and on our Keeper Grid page at: http://rudysbackyard.com/rudys_keeper_grid.html Thanks for purchasing Rudy's PanelKeeper GL1500 kit.
