Grandma Sarah 2` Paper archives can survive centuries of benign neglect. Digital archives require careful management if they are to last more than a few years. Ancestry.com Ronnie Owings Our Mission Since 1975, I have been privileged to photograph Miss Americas, Presidential contenders, Olympic gold medalists, and other celebrities; but photographing the rich and famous does not compare to the privilege of being chosen as someone s family photographer... their family historian. My college degree is in Family Development. My family has always been my priority. Now that the kids are grown and independent, our home showcases beautiful photographs, representing what I treasure most my family. Every stage, highlight, and adventure is proudly displayed on our walls. It is those images that have transformed a house to OUR HOME. One of my grandmothers had money; she could buy anything she wanted. In her later years, Grandma was forced moved to a small assisted living apartment, with only one week s notice. I watched her reduce everything she owned to the contents of one cardboard box. That box overflowed with photographs that highlighted her life and her loved ones; they not only recorded her life and times, they served as a comfort in moments of loneliness... beloved treasures that brought generations together and closer to her. She clearly considered these images to be her most important legacy. For far too many families today, the heirlooms that were so important to my grandmother the ones now treasured by my family are in danger of being lost forever. Instead of printed images, they now have only impermanent digital files that will never be seen by future generations. These files are compelling because they can be shared instantly with hundreds of friends and family. This digital photography truly does serve the purpose of NOW... providing immediate gratification. They are fun to view but then are easily put aside. As you know; computers crash, phones get destroyed, and technology changes (remember infamous 8 track tape?). The fact is that digital images will NOT stand the test of time, but every print we make is archival to assure its permanence. Life is inconstant. What is here today is not always here tomorrow. The investment you make in quality photography... documented and printed by a professional lab, assures that you have something to pass onto the next generation as your legacy. 2 `
Thru the years, I have been fortunate to get to know and to photograph Truett Cathy, Founder of Chick-Fil-A and his family. As a teen, I remember photographing him on his farm. Forty years later, I left his 90th birthday party with an overwhelming sense of honor of serving as his family photographer.
