Special Guest Ellen Osten Director of Education Sulky of America 4 Supplies Zig-zag sewing machine Open-toe appliqué foot Steam Iron Non-stick appliqué pressing sheet Paper scissors Heavy duty scissors Fabric (2 pieces 8 x 10 ) Bosal Heat Moldable Double Sided Fusible Plus Stabilizer or Inn-Spire brand 8 x 10 (these are not Sulky products - see tip sheet for sources) 5 5 (continued on next slide) Supplies (continued) Sulky 30 wt. Cotton Blendables or Sulky 40 wt. Rayon, or color(s) to match your fabrics 14/90 Micro-Tex needle (or a 16/100 Jeans Needle) Chalk fabric marker Leaf pattern (free download available after the webinar) or you can draw your own 6 6

Print out the downloadable leaf pattern Regular printer paper OR 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of Sulky Sticky+ Stabilizer or Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy. 7 8 Press the fabrics Apply the heat-moldable stabilizer to the fabric Appliqué Pressing Sheet 8 9 Copy the leaf pattern on the top fabric. Trace the leaf outline with chalk marker onto the fabric. Optional Trace the pattern with a Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pen for multiple bowls. 9

Draw the center vein with the chalk marker. Add vein lines or ad-lib them as you stitch. 10 Thread the sewing machine with same thread top and bobbin. Use a new, 14/90 Microtex or 16/100 Jeans Needle Select a simple decorative stitch or straight stitch Stitch the vein lines Test your stitches and thread tension outside the traced leaf! 11 11 12 Straight stitch or use a small zig-zag stitch to outline the entire leaf 12

Use the heavy-duty scissors to roughcut around the leaf. 13 14 Trim a second time as close to the leaf outline as possible 14 15 Set the machine up for the final outline stitch Use 1 strips of Sulky Super Solvy to help sew around the edge of the leaf. Satin stitch zig-zag is optional 15

Hint: If you have thread shredding or breakage with this heavy, double-sided fusible stabilizer, and you know all the things you are supposed to do, and you've done them, then this is the time to get out the Sewer's Aid and apply it to the thread spool up and down the thread and a little drop on the needle. 16 16 If you use an open zig-zag to finish the edge, color the white edges of the stabilizer with a matching permanent-ink marker Optional brush on glitter 17 Zig Fabricolor pens for edge touch-up (now available through www.sulky.com) 17 18 Satin Stitch with 30 wt. Blendables 18

Gently pull away the excess Sulky Super Solvy NOTE: This leaf is finished with a straight stitch just inside the edge. 19 20 Steam the flat leaf with an iron While it is soft and hot, mold it over a glass bowl or vase to shape Hold in place until cool 20 21 You can always reheat and remold the leaf. Remove any excess bits of Super Solvy with a wet Q-Tip. 21

A Christmas fabric version 22 23 Amazing!!! Once you ve made your first one, you can pump these out pretty quickly! Think about other shapes you can use, too, like this fish bowl, and here are a couple more leaf ideas 23 24 A much larger leaf bowl, about 12 across finished. 24

A completely different shaped leaf with a 3-D flower. 25 There now don t you feel perfectly competent to create this masterful Floral Fantasy Art by Carol Ingram from the Sulky Online Magical Thread Art Class? 26 26 Some Heat-Moldable Projects Done by Students 27 27
