Topic Creating & Navigating Change Make it Happen Breaking the mould of traditional approaches of brand ownership and the challenges of immersive storytelling. Qantas Australia in 360 ICC Sydney & Tourism Australia s VR Showcase 2

About Us Grainger VR are storytelling & technical experts in the immersive world of 360 Virtual Reality. We use industry leading equipment and custom designed rigs to ensure every project is a premium product. Our team has captured unique adventures with animals, cultures, breathtaking landscapes and drone experiences that take viewers into another world. 3

What is VR? VR vs AR: VR is an immersive headset experience. 360 and 180-degree experiences. Stereoscopic 3D 360 and Monoscopic 2D 360. AR adds digital elements to a live view that utilises smart devices. 5

Types of VR Experiences Stationary VR Stationary VR Includes headsets devices such as Google Cardboard, Gear VR and Oculus Go. These experiences are based on a user staying in one location while viewing an immersive environment. 6

Types of VR Experiences Room Scale VR Room scale experiences allow movement around an environment. HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. 7

Types of VR Experiences 4D Experiences Combines 3D features with sensor-equipment (Haptics) like motion seats, body suits, gloves, wind, rain or smells. 4D Theatres and Ready Player One. 8

Types of VR Experiences Magic Window This doesn t require a VR headset at all. It's a stationary 360 video which uses the gyroscope and accelerometers of your smart device to set your camera position. Facebook and Youtube use this. 9

Traditional Film Making vs Film Making in VR Our Evolution of Storytelling 1. Our beginnings - 1 hour documentary, adventure & travel series for TV 2. The social media revolution - 30-90 second online snackable content 3. Immersive experiences - VR content for headsets A great story is always the key to any medium. Every shot must be engaging and have a core focus to follow. Give the viewer room to explore and enjoy the moment. Make it an emotional journey. Experiences that feel like reality are the most powerful. 360 content for social platforms 10

Tips & Tricks to Filming in 360 1. There s a number of different 360 cameras out there, both for professionals or amateurs. Always look for a camera that works for the production. 2. Use the right equipment for the job. The right cameras, audio recorders, software and computers. Watch out for stitch lines. The closer you shoot the more work in post. Look for cameras with bigger overlap on the lenses so you have more room to work with in post. 3. Get moving! Utilise drones, mounts, poles or remote control devices to get some movement in your videos. 11

Tips & Tricks to Filming in 360 4. Learn to hide or take a clean plate shot. 5. Bracket exposure when the exposure width is extreme. 6. Get lost in 360. A common problem is people looking the wrong way. Always have a key focus, using a visual or audio cue. Presenters, narrators, key subjects or even arrows are great for this. 7. And finally... Label your shots correctly. There are a lot more files than traditional shooting so be smart when data wrangling. 12

Qantas Australia in 360 - Australia s First VR Travel Series This is Australia s first Virtual Reality travel series and a turning point for the travel and airline industry across the country. Qantas were looking for a way to inspire travel in a new way and 360 was the answer. We produced a 6 part series showcasing a variety of Australia s most immersive locations. The series has been a huge success organically through Youtube and a great offering for their clients. 13

Outputs Qantas VR App Available on App Store and Google play Facebook Youtube Google Cardboard Also used in some Qantas Business Class Lounges. 16

ICC Sydney s Virtual Reality Showcase Tourism Australia and ICC Sydney needed to offer a unique approach for their event planners for this brand new venue. ICC Sydney is the first convention centre in Australia to develop two VR headset films and a site tour, all housed in a customised VR app. The VR experience was constructed using two 360 videos and panoramic photography, with desktop users able to view the virtual tour on the ICC Sydney YouTube channel. 17

360 Photography We produced a series of 360 panoramas to inspire planners about the possibilities for using this venue for a future event. ICC have said the VR Showcase has set them apart from their competitors and has been an incredibly successful campaign. 19

Outputs ICC VR App Available on App Store and Google play Facebook Youtube Google Cardboard Also used with high end headsets (Oculus Go/Gear VR) for presentations. 20

Key Take-aways 1. Look to produce videos & experiences that work well in a 360 environment. 2. The story is key. 3. Use unique subjects, immersive environments & dream locations. 4. Shoot smart. The more time you spend setting up, and thinking through the shot, the less time spent in post. 5. Use the right equipment for the job. The right cameras, audio recorders, software and computers. 6. Get moving! Utilise movement in your productions where possible. 7. Work with your clients to educate them on the best way to use 360 & VR in their positioning. 21
