One Room Schoolhouse pattern instructions Designed by Diane Nagle Cutting: It is helpful to label your cut pieces by block and size. Read all instructions before you begin. Fabric A: House block: (1) 3 ½ x 42 strip; cut into (2) 3 ½ x 14 ¾ rectangles. Save remaining strip. Use remaining strip, trim down to 2 ¾ wide; cut into (1) 2 ¾ x 12 ½ rectangle. (1) 4 ¼ x 42 strip; cut into (1) 4 ¼ x 18 ½ rectangle. (1) 2 ½ x 42 strip; cut into (1) each of Templates 2 and 3. Trim remaining strip down to 2 wide, and cut into (2) 2 x 2 3/8 rectangles and (1) 2 x 5 rectangle. Fabric B: House block: (1) 2 x 42 strip; cut into (1) 2 x 12 ½ rectangle and (5) 2 x 2 ¾ rectangles. (1) 3 ½ x 42 strip; cut into (2) 3 ½ x 5 3/8 rectangles. Border 4: (3) 2 x 42 strips. Sew end to end and cut into (2) 2 x 27 ½ strips, and (2) 2 x 30 ½ strips. Fabric C: House Block: (1) Roof template 1. Fabric D: House block: (2)2 3/8 x 2 ¾ rectangles. Fabric E: House block: (2) 2 x 2 3/8 rectangles. Checkerboard block: (4) 2 x 42 strips for strip sets. Binding: (5) 2 ½ x 42 binding strips. Fabric F: House block: (1) 2 ¾ x 4 ¼ rectangle. Fabric G: Inner border: (2) 1 ½ x 42 strips; cut into (2) 1 ½ x 18 ½ strips and (2) 1 ½ x 20 ½ strips. Corner block: (1) 1 ¾ x 42 strip; cut into (4) 1 ¾ squares and (4) 1 ¾ x 3 rectangles. Checkerboard: (4) 2 x 42 strips for strip sets. (4) 3 ½ x 42 strips; cut into (20) 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles. Star block: (1) 2 ½ x 42 strip; cut into (16) 2 ½ squares. (1) 2 ½ x 42 strip; cut into (16) Template 6 or use the Tri tool on the 2 ½ line from the Tri Recs rulers. Pieced border 2: (3) 1 ¾ x 42 strips; cut into (32) 1 ¾ x 3 rectangles. (2) 1 ¾ x 42 strips; cut into (32) 1 ¾ x 2 ¼ rectangles. Fabric H: Border 3: (3) 1 ½ x 42 strips. Sew end to end and cut into (2) 1 ½ x 25 ½ strips and (2) 1 ½ x 27 ½ strips. Fabric I: Star block: (4) 2 ½ squares. Pieced border 2: (2) 1 ¾ x 42 strips; cut into (32) 1 ¾ squares. (2) 1 ¾ x 42 strips; cut into (32) 1 ¾ x 2 5/8 rectangles and (4) 1 ¾ squares for the Corner block. Page 1
Fabric J: Star block: (1) 2 ½ x 42 strip; cut into (16) each of Templates 4 and 5. (Optional: Tri Recs Rulers-use the 2 ½ line using the Recs tool. Block assembly House block: 1. Sew the long side of a Fabric B 2 x 2 ¾ rectangle to both long sides of a Fabric D 2 3/8 x 2 ¾ rectangle. Sew a Fabric B 3 ½ x 5 3/8 rectangle to the bottom to complete the window unit. Make 2. window unit. door unit. Step 3 house body 2. Sew the long side of a Fabric B 2 x 2 ¾ rectangle to the short end of a Fabric F 2 ¾ x 4 ¼ rectangle to make the door unit. 3. Sew a window unit to both sides of the door unit. Sew a Fabric B 2 x 12 ½ strip to the top to complete the house body. 4. Sew a Fabric A Template 2 and 3 to the ends of the Fabric C Template 1 to complete the roof line. Template 2 Template 1 Template 3 5. Sew the roof line in Step 4 to the top of the house body. 6. Sew a Fabric E 2 x 2 3/8 rectangle to both ends of a Fabric A 2 x 5 rectangle 7. Sew a Fabric A 2 x 2 3/8 rectangle to both ends of the Step 6 unit. Sew to the top of the house. 8. Sew a Fabric A 2 ¾ x 12 ½ strip to the top of the house. 9. Sew a Fabric A 3 ½ x 14 ¾ strip to both sides of the house. 10. Sew a Fabric A 4 ¼ x 18 ½ strip to the bottom of the house House block to complete the block. Square up to 18 ½. Inner border: 11. Sew a Fabric G 1 ½ x 18 ½ strip to both sides of the House block. Sew a Fabric G 1 ½ x 20 ½ strip to the top and bottom of the block. Pieced border: 12. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of a Fabric I 1 ¾ square. Place it right sides together on the bottom end of a Fabric G 1 ¾ x 3 rectangle as shown. Sew on the drawn line, press to the pink, trim to ¼ seam allowance. This Unit a should measure 1 ¾ x 3. Repeat to make 16. Stitch on line Trim ¼ lower left and press to corner = Mirror image = 13. Repeat Step 12, placing the diagonal line in the opposite direction as shown to make a mirror image version of Unit a. Make 16. Set aside. Page 2
14. Measure off 1 ¾ from the end of a Fabric G 1 ¾ x 2 ¼ rectangle and draw a vertical line. Draw a diagonal line as shown, within that square. Place the square right side together on the Fabric I 1 ¾ x 2 5/8 rectangle. Sew on the diagonal line as before, press the Fabric G upward to make Unit b. Trim a ¼ seam allowance as before. Square up to 1 ¾ x 3. Make 16. Fabric G with drawn lines at 1 ¾ and diagonally Unit b Sew on diagonal line. 15. Repeat Step 14, placing the diagonal line in the opposite direction as shown to make a mirror image version of Unit b. Make 16. Set aside. Mirror image a/b unit Mirror a/b unit 16. Sew a Unit a to the left side of a Unit b. Square up to 3 x 3. Make 16. 17. Sew a mirror Unit b to the left side of a mirror Unit a. Square up to 3 x 3. Make 16. 18. Sew an a/b unit to the left side of a mirror a/b unit to complete the block. Square up to 3 x 5 ½. 19. Make 16. Pieced border block. Make 16. 20. Sew (4) Pieced border blocks together end to end. Make 4 21. Sew (2) borders to the sides of the quilt as shown. Step 22 Corner block. Make 4. Step 21 Corner blocks added to the ends of a Step 20 row Step 23 22. Sew a Fabric G 1 ¾ square to the top of a Fabric I 1 ¾ square. Sew the long side of a Fabric G 1 ¾ x 3 rectangle to the left side to complete a Corner block. Square up to 3 ½. Make 4. 23. Sew a Corner block to both ends of a remaining border row from Step 20 as shown. Make 2. Sew one row to the top of the quilt. Rotate and sew the second row to the bottom of the quilt. Border 3: 24. Sew a Fabric H 1 ½ x 25 ½ strip to both sides of the quilt. Sew a Fabric H 1 ½ x 27 ½ strip to the top and bottom of the quilt Border 4: 25. Sew a Fabric B 2 x 27 ½ strip to both sides of the quilt. Sew a Fabric B 2 x 30 ½ strip to the top and bottom of the quilt. Page 3
Star block: 26. Sew the diagonal side of a Fabric J Template 4 and 5 to both diagonal sides of a Fabric G Template 6 to make a Tri Recs unit. Make 4. Tri Recs unit. 27. Sew a Fabric G 2 ½ square to both sides of a Tri Recs unit to make row 1 of the block 28. Sew the base of a Tri Recs unit to both sides of a Fabric I 2 ½ square for row 2 29. Sew row 1 from Step 27 to the top of row 2. Rotate and sew the remaining row 1 to the bottom of row 2 to complete the block. Square up to 6 ½. Make 4. Star Block Make 4. Checkerboard block: 30. Sew a Fabric G and E 2 strip together on the long sides. Press to the dark. Make (4) G/E strip sets. Cross cut (4) 2 x 3 ½ units from the strip set. Sew 2 units together to make a 4 patch unit. 31. Sew (2) 4 patch units together as shown. 32. Sew a Fabric G 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle to the bottom of the 4 patch section to finish the block. Make 20. 4 patch Step 23 Step 24 33. Sew (5) Checkerboard blocks together end to end to make a row. Make 4 34. Sew the checkerboard side of a row in Step 29 to both sides of the quilt. 35. Sew a Star block to both short ends of the remaining two Checkerboard rows. 36. Sew to the Star block/checkerboard row to the top of the quilt. Rotate and sew the second row to the bottom of the quilt to finish. 37. Layer quilt with batting and batting, quilt as desired and bind using the Fabric E 2 ½ binding strips. Page 4
