Reverse Mount Roman Shade Fabrication Seamless Workroom LLC 2017

In this presentation I will show you how easy it is to fabricate a reverse mount roman shade with a hidden weight bar and hidden ribs. With this fabrication method there is no need to cut a slit in the shade for installation. Reverse mount roman shades bring the shade to the back of the lift system. This fabrication method is perfect for doors and eliminates most of the light leak from the sides of roman shades. The shade is ½ narrower than the lift system and valance so that the bead chain will be along the side of the shade and not behind the shade. Note: If your shade is wider than 24, I advise using grommets instead of button holes because it is difficult to get the shade under the presser foot on the sewing machine.

Materials and supplies: Sufficient yardage for roman shade and valance Interlining if required Blackout or sateen lining Wonder Clips, Large Wawak Button Thread Lift system I used the Forest Group RBS Roman Blind Lift System. Lift system is ½ wider than finished width of shade. This fabrication works with any lift system that can be board mounted. Shade ribs (Rowley Company) Rowley Metal Rings 3/8 Nickel ST16/N Shade Levelers (with lift system) quantity to match lift cords Weight Bar (with lift system) Shroud Tube, Ladder Tape or Ring Locks I used Rowley Shroud Tube Mounting Board exact measurement ¾ by 2 ½ by width of lift system Grommets if preferred Note: I have used shroud tube for this shade. If you prefer ladder tape or Safe T Shade Ring Locks, follow instructions for those products

Cutting Directions Face Fabric: Shade - (Finished width plus 4 ) by (Finished length plus 4 ) 6 FL Valance - 15 by (Finished width Plus 4 plus 4 plus 2 ½ plus 2 ½ plus 1 ) Interlining: (Finished Width) by (Finished Length plus 1 ) Lining: (Finished Width minus ½ plus 4 ) by (Finished Length plus 1 )

Face Fabric My shade measures 22 FW by FL. Lay face fabric face down on the work table. Fold over 2 on each side and press. 2 2

Interlining Place interlining on wrong side of face fabric 3 up from the bottom and under folded over sides. Smooth out interlining. Fold over fabric sides.

Bottom Double Hem At the bottom fold up 3 and turn under 1 ½ for a 1 ½ double hem. Next, square up the shade.

Lining Lay Lining face down on work table. Fold over 2 on each side. The lining will then be ½ narrower than the finished width of the shade. 21 ½ Next mark 4 up from the bottom and draw a line. Cut a strip of lining 3 ¼ by the finished width of the shade. This is the weight bar sleeve. Fold it in half and pin. Draw a stitch line ¼ from the top edge. Place onto lining, aligning both lines. Stitch 3 ¾ from each raw edge of lining. Stitching line

Weight Bar Insert the weight bar into the weight bar sleeve and set aside..

Shade Ribs Determine how many shade ribs are needed and cut to the finished width. The spacing can not be more than 8. For the shade to be compliant, the loop formed by the cord and fabric cannot be more than 16. Also cut a shade rib to go inside the bottom hem. Place ribs under the turned over side hems at the correct spacing.

Shade Rib and Weight Bar Weight bar will be here Shade rib in bottom hem

Table Lining Place the lining with the wrong side onto the interlining. Fold under side hems. The bottom of the lining will be at the bottom of the interlining.

Hiding the Weight Bar Now it is time to conceal the weight bar. Fold back the lining side hem. Fold back the face fabric side hem.

Hiding the Weight Bar Fold the face fabric side hem over the weight bar sleeve.

Weight Bar Concealed Fold over the lining side hem. The weight bar is now concealed between the lining and the interlining.

Bottom Hem Fold up the bottom hem. I use Wonder Clips to hold the hem in place. Finish as you normally do.

Side Hems Make sure that the shade ribs are in the correct places. Mark the spacing for the Shroud Tube, Ladder Tape or rings. See arrows. The shade ribs are directly under where the tube, tape or rings will be sewn on. Stitch through all layers and around the shade rib. Use Wonder Clips to hold the side hems in place and finish as you normally.

Wawak Button Thread I use this thread to stitch the shroud tube onto the shade. It is strong and holds a knot very well. I also put a dab of Rowley Fringe Adhesive on the knot to make sure it doesn t come untied.

Shroud Tube Sewn in Place If you use ladder tape or Safe T Shade Ring Locks, apply at this time. With Ring Locks you will use the lift system cord. Sew the rings on at this time.

Shroud Tube at the Bottom Slide a ring onto the shroud tube at the weight bar stitch line. Stitch through all layers, through shroud tube and around the ring.

Serge the top edge of the shade

Button Hole Placement Place the lift system onto the shade at the top edge. Mark 2 down from the bottom of the lift system for each lift cord.

Mark ¾ button holes and machine stitch. Cut slit in button hole. Grommets are an alternative to button holes.

Pull cord out of shroud tube at button hole mark. Tweezers make it easier.

Pull cord out through button hole.

Back View Showing Cord Going Through Button Hole

Lay shroud tube loosely up and over the top of the shade.

Pin Shroud Tube At Top of Shade.

Cut a piece of Velcro the width of the shade and pin at the top of the shade. Make sure that the Velcro is the opposite of the Velcro on the lift system.

Attach the lift system to the shade matching up the Velcro. The shade will be ½ than the lift system. This slide shows the clutch on the outside.

Tie the lift system cord to the shroud tube cord with a knot. Flip the shade over and pull the cord carefully through the shroud tube. Tweezers make it easier.

Trick to get the knot through the shroud tube Form a loop with the cord from the shade and push the loop through an opening in the tube. Carefully push the knot after the loop. Pull the cord through from the bottom.

After the cord is pulled all the way through the shroud tube, cut the cord off about 2 below the bottom of the shade. Next pull the cord out through the shroud tube below the ring.

Slide Shade Leveler Onto Cord Below Ring.

Tie know in empty shroud tube. Cut off excess tube.

Tie Knot in Cord Below Shade Leveler

Valance Fold face fabric in half and seamed at each side. Fold in and press kick pleats at each side leaving return to go around side of board. Stitch a fold line 6 up from the bottom. Line up this stitch line with the edge of the board and staple in place. Staple dust cover on top.

Attach lift system brackets to under side of board.

This view shows front of shade with cords coming from lift system and going through button holes to the back of the shade.
