Genealogy Basics Register Descendant Report By Joe Petrie A Register Report is really a Descendant Report where the provider selects the number of generations of an individual (the Progenitor) for a report to send to descendant(s) or to genealogy societies. I do not send the reports very often. When I know that a recipient has genealogy software. I send a GEDCOM file. If not, I send a Register Report. Sometimes, I send both. I generally use one of 2 formats; modified and complete. Mostly I send a Modified Register Report with a limited number of generations usually stopping in the early 20 th Century. For example, my Modified Register Report for the Petries on www.cbgen.org and on www.friendsofirishresearch.org only has 5 generations. I always opt for the Register Report because it generally has an Index to the Paragraph Number. I add an Acknowledgement Section to identify web and individual sources. The Register Report software has a number of options. For example, the provider can also leave out the Notes for each record and also the Index. Finally, I do not put in footnotes because lots of word processors can t handle them. Since Word added a PDF option, I have started sending Registers in PDF. As genealogy.about.com describes it, the Register Report method is: Based on the numbering system developed by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society in 1870, the register system is one of the two main systems in use today for numbering descendant reports. It is used for published family genealogies in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, for which the register numbering system is named. The register numbering method was also the primary numbering system used for family histories published in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I use the NEHGS method. Wiki describes the NEHGS methodology as: The Register System uses both common numerals (1, 2, 3, 4) and Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv). The system is organized by generation, i.e., generations are grouped separately. Please note that the following Register Report was prepared for a Boutilier cousin (a fellow genealogist). The report has my actual notes. Some records have no notes. Those are usually from a genealogist or a family member who has asked to remain anonymous. I do try to substantiate the information using official vital records. Professional genealogists always try to get at least 2 official sources. Even though I do not accept clients nor charge fees, I am a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists as a researcher.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The sources of many of my previously published Boutilier records were: my aunts (Dad s and Mom s sister - both were Boutiliers); Victoria Boutilier, General Donald Lewis (who requested that it be anonymous); George Lawrence (who collected Boutilier Obituaries); David Keith McMullen (most of his Boutilier records have been validated by Bob Hegerich in Bob s World Connect database); John Howie and Elaine Boutilier. In fact, an earlier version of this document was prepared for Elaine Boutilier. Elaine has been searching for her close cousins for years. Because she noticed that in one of my publicly available Boutilier Register Reports on www.friendsofirishresearchorg that I had left out the Beatty family, she asked that I research them and include them. I plan to update the various Register reports in the near future. I probably missed Mary Ann Boutilier Beatty because in many of the databases that I use her maiden surname was Butler. I had looked at many Massachusetts records for Boutiliers who changed their surnames to Butler. Among the many that I probably missed are Mary Ann and her brother Simon P Boutilier (Butler) who was enumerated in the 1920 US Census living with his sister. Remember that I usually start with the Censuses. Her year of Death is from Ancestry, Massachusetts Death Index. The 3 Vital Indices (Birth, Marriage and Death) were copied from books on file at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) Library on Newbury St, in Boston, Massachusetts. At the time, I researched those books they were not digitized and Mary A. Boutilier was listed in the Beatty section. Please note that many of the new records of the document were gathered from Ancestry.com records using Norwood Massachusetts Morrill Memorial Library s access through the Minuteman Library Network. Ancestry has Massachusetts Indexes for Birth, Marriages and Deaths up to 1950 (and other years). Ancestry also has US and Canadian Censuses, Immigration, Border Crossing and Naturalization records and images of many of the source records. In addition, I used CBGHA records. I have harvested many cemetery and obituaries. Also, I even used one set of Ancestry Tree Family Tree for records from one Beatty family (the Blye family) because much of the data matched many of my newly harvested records. I only used records that I could validate. Remember that I am not a fan of Ancestry Family Trees. I advise people to be cautious. For the above Register Report, the source of most of the Blye family data was Ancestry Family Trees. Why did I use it and identify it as a source? Frankly, I was able to validate the Birth Year using Ancestry s 1940 US Census data and Ancestry s Massachusetts Birth Index. Finally, I also used FamilySearch.org records because of the coverage and the images. Comments and suggestions are appreciated.
