Changing Role of Kenyan Universities to Build a Knowledge Economy Universities are the best assets of the nation to make a direct contribution to innovation and economic development Over the last 10 years JKUAT has increased its budget commitment to research and innovation from KSh.15 million to KSh.90 million annually to elevate its contribution to the industrialization of Kenya

Nairobi Industrial and Technology Park (NITP) Concept The JKUAT s adoption of the new role has generated a culture of innovation in the university that has caused creation of the Nairobi Industrial and Technology Park (NITP) The aim of NITP is to facilitate transformation of innovations and research findings into sustainable enterprises by availing an incubation process 4

TAIFA Electronics Computer hardware and software are key to ICT advancement in the country. Kenya has made considerable advances in the software development but still lags behind in hardware technology. JKUAT has initiated a local solution to this gap by launching TAIFA laptop, the 1 st Kenyan laptop computer 12

Improved Environment Computer demand has increased considerably in the country Government policy towards adoption of ICT and job creation has now improved; Thus, the environment for investment in computer hardware assembly/manufacture locally has improved. 13

Computer Assembly JKUAT has developed strategy and structure that would enable it provide an end-to-end solution for ICT integration including: Policy and strategy; Hardware, software and applications; E-agricultural extension content Curriculum, e-content and e-books; Training and capacity building; Technical support and connectivity e-waste management; Marketing and distribution 14
