Part two, part two. You will hear three short conversations. Listen to the conversations and choose the best answer to the questions. Put a circle round the letter of the best answer. You will hear each conversation twice. Look at the questions for Conversation One. (10 seconds.) Conversation One Oh good afternoon, Can you help me? If I can; what s the problem? I ve got the wrong bus ticket - I mean, right ticket but wrong date. It s for tomorrow but I need to travel today. Your ticket is only good for tomorrow, sir. Sorry about that. Oh it s my fault. I didn t check at the travel agent s. Let me see if there are spaces on today s service. Oh no. It s going to be a very expensive mistake. Why didn t I check? There are seats remaining. But do I have to pay the full fare? No, sir. Just a fee of five dollars. Seriously? That s great, I can t thank you enough! Thank you so much! Not at all, sir. (Wait 10 seconds before going onto the next conversation.) Now, look at the questions for Conversation Two. (10 seconds.) Ls3

Conversation Two Sorry to keep you waiting. No problem, I ve finished college for the day. Good to see you so busy. It s unbelievable! Everyone in town seems to want their hair cut. I know, I tried to get an appointment earlier. So how would you like it this time? I ve got an interview for an office job so I want to look smart. Quite short, please. Covering the ears, or shall I cut it shorter? Shorter. It ll soon be summer. Don t remind me. No lazy holiday by the sea for me this year. You re not working all summer! No, my sister s going to Australia and I m looking after her three children and two dogs! I hope they all behave for you. (Wait 10 seconds before going onto the next conversation.) Now, look at the questions for Conversation Three. (10 seconds.) Ls4

Conversation Three It s good of you to help me. Not at all, I promised your mother I would. I ve got this visa application form to fill in. Well, I m no expert but let s have a look. Thanks. It says I have to give the name of a person to contact... can I use yours? Er... no, it has to be someone in your family. Oh fine, I ll put um s name. y teacher said I needed to give details of my study programme. Yes. What course are you taking? A one year course in tourism. A whole year! You must be so excited. I would be myself. I ve never been so far away from home ever. Don t worry. You ll be all right. (10 seconds.) That is the end of Part Two. Ls5

Part three, part three. Listen to the person talking. Complete the information on the notepad. Write short answers of one to three words. Look at the notepad. The first one is an example. (20 seconds) You will hear the person twice. Welcome to the Culture Centre. We are happy to help with your study project. I see you all have notepads and pens, so I ll give you some information before the centre opens. It s quarter to ten now, so we still have fifteen minutes before the doors open. You are welcome to use the centre s computers. To log on, type in the word visitor it doesn t matter whether that s in capitals or not. We have a limited number of computers so please book at Reception. I m sure you will want to talk to some of our excellent teachers. We ask you not to do this in the classrooms or the staffroom, they get very busy; next to Reception there s a small cafe and that s a good place to sit and talk. You might like to make a note of this: we now teach seven different foreign languages and have a team of sixteen language teachers; I m sure they ll be happy to speak to you. In the next twelve months, we hope to add andarin Chinese as so many millions of people speak it. There is an art exhibition opening this afternoon. You are welcome to interview the exciting young artist whose work s on show. His work is all about something I m sure we are all interested in: friendship. You will find two tickets in your welcome pack. The yellow ticket is for this evening s music concert. Your teacher tells me you are keen fans of pop music so I hope you won t be too disappointed that tonight our orchestra is playing a selection of classical pieces. The green ticket says you are invited to lunch at twelve on the third floor. There s been a couple of changes. Just note that it s on the second floor and lunch is at one o clock. Enjoy your visit, everybody. (10 seconds.) That is the end of Part Three. Ls6

Part four, part four. Listen to the conversation and answer the questions. Put a circle round the letter of the correct answer. Look at the questions. There is an example. (20 seconds.) You will hear the conversation twice. So Katya, how are you getting on? All right I think, r inlay. Well I m a bit worried about some of my work. Well I ve looked at all your marks. You are doing well in most subjects. Very well in fact, especially History and English. So which ones are you worried about? I was worried about Science, but that s OK now. I don t think I m doing that well in Geography. I had to redo my last project. mm, you have had one or two low marks. Do you know why that was? y teacher explained that my last project was too short and I had missed out some of the maps. I don t think I m good at Geography, r inlay. I m sure that s not true Katya. We just need to find out what the problem is. I know you re a hardworking student, so there must be something we can do to help you. Have you any ideas yourself? mm. Sometimes I don t understand what I have to do. We re given a handout with instructions for each project, but I think I m better at exams than doing projects. And with Geography your final mark is 50 percent project work, isn t it? Yes that s right. That s why I m a bit worried about it. Do you ask your teacher for help if you don t understand what to do? It s only when I get home and get started on a project I get confused. Then I start looking for information on the web and there s so much. I spend ages trying to find what I need. But, you can always ask to see your teacher and get some help. I don t like to do that. I think I should be able to do it on my own. I ask my friends, but, you know, sometimes they don t really understand either. Well let me give you some advice. What about this? I ll speak to your Geography teacher. It s r Khan, isn t it? And I want you to promise to ask him to explain things if you re not sure what do. How about that? (continued) Ls7

That would be really good r inlay. Thank you. And you need to understand your teachers are here to help you and we all want you to do well. You want to go to college, don t you? Yes and I do need to pass with good grades. I know that. So was there anything else you need to discuss with me? No, but thank you very much for your help. No problem. And you know you can always come and talk to me if you re worried about your work in any way. And another thought, perhaps we need to give everyone a bit more help in using the web better. It s an important skill, I think. (10 seconds.) That is the end of Part our. Ls8
