GOAL CLARITY ROADMAP YVONNEDERKX.COM
GOAL CLARITY ROADMAP Hello Sunshine! "Which goals should I focus on first?" This is a question many entrepreneurs ask themselves. The Goal Clarity Roadmap will help you navigate through the different goals you've set for yourself and gives you a step-by-step guide to narrow down which goals to focus on. There are 6 parts to this roadmap. The first one consists of 10 questions, which invite you to explore possible goals for yourself. Because the first step to getting clear which goals to engage with, is to get them out of your head and onto paper. STEP 1 GOAL BRAINDUMP For each section below, make a list of as many things you can think of. They don't need to be goals you can accomplish within a year, or even within a lifetime. Nor do they need to be realistic or specific or fit any of the other "goal rules" you might have been taught. Later, in the next parts, you'll refine your choices in a simple way. For now, just write down as many things you can think of, and then, when you're ready, move on to the next step. VKRXOGJRDOV We all have goals we feel we "should" do. What goals do you feel you "should" pursue? What goals would make you "a better person" if you accomplished them? What are your biggest challenges right now?
/RJLFDOQH[WVWHSJRDOVb Often, the goals we aim to accomplish are simply natural progressions from the ones we've been pursuing in the past. They are goals that, since you did what you did in the past year, naturally you'll be doing them in the future. What do you feel are the sensible, reasonable, responsible goals to go after next? '«M YXJRDOVb What are the goals you swore you were going to reach last year... and the year before that... and the year before that? You can use the following sentence starters to help you here: "By now, you'd think I would have " "This year, I'm finally going to " "If I don't this year, I'm never going to do it!"
b6rpherg\hovhvjrdovb Make a list of all the goals that were handed to you by someone else. This doesn't mean you don't share this person's aspirations for you. It's simply valuable to recognize the role other people's intentions have in shaping your own. Filling in the blanks of the following sentences can help you. "My father/mother was already when (s)he was my age." "My father/mother always wanted me to " "Everyone has always expected me to " "My partner/spouse/friends realyy wish I would " For the following questions, allow yourself to explore the goals that live in your heart. As you go through the questions, let go of any judgement around what you could, couldn't, should or shouldn't have. Simply observe what your heart tells you it what it actually wants, whether or not you think you can have it or create it.
b'hhsghvluhvb What do you want more than anything else in the whole wide world? What do you daydream about, even if you've never admitted it out loud before? What would be even more wonderful than your daydream? b*hqlhlqderwwohghvluhv If you would find a magic bottle, with a genie inside, ready to grant you any wish you desired, what would you ask him? What would you want if you could have absolutely anything drop into your lap out of the clear blue sky, without having to do anything at all to attain, keep, or maintain it? What else would you want? And what else?
b%ljvplohrq\rxuidfhghvluhvb Sometimes we don't allow ourselves to dream big, afraid of how disappointed we'll be if we fail (again!) to make our dreams come true. Use the following questions to (re-)discover these desires: What would you want if you knew you didn't have to be unhappy about not getting it? If you knew your happiness wasn't dependent on getting what you wanted, what would you want? If you were already happy, what would you still want to do, be, learn, or have? *XLOW\GHVLUHV Sometimes we're told we can't have what we want. But if you didn't think "I shouldn't want that", what would you want? What would you want if you knew that having it wouldn't hurt anyone else, make you a bad person, or betray anyone you cared about? What would you want if nobody was watching? What would you want if nobody cared?
b,irqo\ghvluhv What if your life was different, would you then want different things from the ones you want now? What would you want if only things were different? What would you want if you knew that you really could handle having it? b20*ghvluhv What could happen in the next day/week/month/year that would make you go "OMG! Wow!" What would you love to have more of in your life? What would you love to do? Where would you love to go? What would you love to learn?
STEP 2 REFINING YOUR GOALS In this step, you'll go through the list of all the amazing possibilities you've created for your life. For each item on your list, ask yourself this simple question: 5HJDUGOHVVRIZKHWKHURUQRW,WKLQN,FDQDFWXDOO\KDYHWKLVGR,UHDOO\ZDQWLW" If your answer is a "hell yes", circle or highlight it. If your answer is a no-brainer "no", cross it of or delete it. If your answer is anything other than a "hell yes" or a no-brainer "no", leave it off for now. Create a new list below, with all your "hell yes" goals.
STEP 3 "FAIRY GODMOTHER" VS INTENTIONS In this step, we'll take a look at your "hell yes" goals and place them on either a "fairy godmother" list or an intention list. )DLU\JRGPRWKHUOLVW This are the goals you would love to be, do, or have in your life, but you aren't really sure if you're up for creating them. But... if they would come to you out of a clear blue sky, or your fairy godmother showed up and waved her magic wand, you'd be all over them. This list is a very powerful list to have and keeps you in touch with your dreams and deepest desires. Even if they seem out of your league right now.,qwhqwlrqolvw The goals on this list are the ones you want to take responsibility for and focus at least a part of your life on creating them. Even when working on these goals doesn't go the way you planned it to go, you still feel good for having invested time and energy into making them happen. For every item on your "hell yes" list, ask yourself each of the following questions: "Do I want to focus a part of my life on actively creating this?" "Do I want to invest my time and energy into making this happen?" "If all my time and energy didn't lead to the result I wanted, would I still be glad I took the time to work on it?" If your answer to all three of the questions is a no-brainer "heck yeah", put it on your intention list. Otherwise, it goes on the "fairy godmother" list.
)DLU\JRGPRWKHUOLVW,QWHQWLRQOLVW
Looking at both the lists, what do you notice? How does it feel seeing these two lists? STEP 4 GOAL VS PROJECT A goal and a project are two different things, but very often used wrong. A goal is something you don't have full control over. There are a lot of aspects at play to reach a goal, of which some are not under your control. You do, however, have full control over projects. Goals are always reached in the future. Projects on the other hand, are worked on in the present. Goals are things you work towards. Projects are things you work on. For example, as an entrepreneur, launching your website is a project, not a goal. You have full control over all the tasks involved and can influence them. Have an increase in traffic to your website by a certain time is a goal. You don't control all the aspects involved with reaching this goal and can't always influence them the way you want to. Which means there's a very good chance you'll accomplish more than you thought you could.
Looking at your Intention list, what are goals and what are projects? *RDOV 3URMHFWV
Many times, the projects we set for ourselves are related to the bigger goals we want to achieve. For instance, the project of launching your website will have a positive impact in realizing your ultimate goal of driving more traffic to your site. If you take a look at your goal and project list, are there any projects that can be grouped together under one or two specific goals? STEP 5 TASK & TO-DO BRAIN DUMP Congratulations! Getting clear on your goals is a process and takes time. And your freaking awesome for coming this far. You now have more clarity on what your "hell yes" goals are, have a powerful list of goals to keep you in touch with your deepest desires and dreams, know what the difference is between goals and projects, and you've got clarity on what your goals and projects are. Wooooow! How does that feel? Now with this last two steps, it's all about getting clear on how you can discover what to focus on this coming month, the next month and the month after that, so you can achieve the goals you truly want to reach.
Looking at your goals and projects, there are probably a whole lot of to-do's popping, aren't there? This is very understandable, but can also leave you feeling overwhelmed. It's therefore important to get all the to-do's that are jumping around and taking up space in your mind, to get them out of your head and onto paper. Below, write down any and all projects, tasks, and to-do's that are taking up valuable space in your head. Don't hold back here. This exercise is called a brain dump for a reason.
STEP 6 PRIORITIZING WHAT COMES FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD Go back to your brain dump and put each item in one of the following three categories: Should happen this month Should happen within the coming three months Should happen this year Below, write down the items you put in the first category, the one for this month. How does it feel looking at this list? Write it down below. Do you still feel overwhelmed? If so, is this because there are tasks on your list for this month that are not related to any of the goals or projects you mentioned in step 3 and 4?
"Which goals should I focus on first?" That's the question we asked ourselves at the beginning of this roadmap. It's my hope that you now, here at the end of this roadmap, feel so much more clarity for yourself. And feel confidence you've got the tools to discover which action steps to take next. You've got this Sunshine! Much love & adventures, - Yvonne
