Nominal versus finished sizes LUMBER SIZING Wood Species 2x4s are not actually 2 inches by 4 inches. When the board is first rough sawn from the log, it is a true 2x4, but the drying process and planing of the board reduce it to the finished 1.5x3.5 sizes. Be sure whenever ordering S4S or any other woodwork that it is sanded and ready for finish. ~ 97 ~

Tech Info Tree Growth: TECHNICAL INFORMATION As a tree grows it forms annual rings that are visible in a cross section of a log. The light and dark rings, referred as springwood & summerwood as shown in the chart below, are formed due to how much moisture & nutrients the tree is receiving. These rings are what makes wood interesting and allows each and every piece of lumber to be different from the next. Another characteristic in lumber is the heartwood and sapwood. Heartwood makes up about 66% of the log from the center of the log outward and is generally much darker in color, while the other 33% of the log or the outer ring is the sap wood and is lighter in color. You will notice in your woodwork as a piece of trim changes colors or you notice that one color is a different color from the next. This color can be related as to what part of the log the lumber came from. This color variation is what also makes wood unique. If a more consistent color in your finished millwork is desired you can specify having it a uniform color OR color selected. Specifying this will result in a more uniform color, however, please keep in mind that there are not two cuts of lumber in the universe that are identically the same in grain pattern and/or color. 2005 AWI/AWMAC 8th Edition Quality Standards ~ 98 ~

TECHNICAL INFORMATION Rough Sawing of Lumber: Tech Info Three common cuts of lumber are: Plain Sawn is the most common of the three because your widest boards are available and the least waste is achieved making it also the most economical. In a plain sawn cut the annual rings are typically 30 degrees or less to the face of the board This allows you to see most of each annual ring. Quarter Sawn is a cut of the log that runs 60-90 degrees of the annual rings. With the cut being perpendicular to the rings the result is a fine straight grain pattern and the board width selection is much narrower. Quarter sawn is famously known for the often occurring flecking appearance it causes in different species. Rift Sawn is the cut of the log that runs 30-60 degrees of the annual run. This cut generates a fine to semi-fine straight grain pattern very similar to the grain in quarter sawn, however, does not contain the flecking. 2005 AWI/AWMAC 8th Edition Quality Standards ~ 99 ~

Tech Info Drying of Lumber: TECHNICAL INFORMATION Before the log is even sawn it is predetermined what industry the cuts of lumber will be used for. There are generally two types of uses The construction industry and the fine furniture/millwork industry. The difference is that the lumber being used for millwork, cabinet, doors and furniture is kiln dried to 6%-8% moisture content. There are several reasons why lumber is dried and here are a few: 1. Better usability When wood dries it shrinks (See charts below), drying lumber before a piece of furniture is manufactured will result in a better more stable finished product. If lumber that is not dry is used in a project, over time the lumber will air dry and can result in warping, twisting, cupping, and even cracking. 2. Increased strength As the wood dries below 30% the strength properties increase. 3. Better Holding Power Nails, screws, and even glue holds better to a dry product versus a green product. 4. Better Finishing Paints and finishes adhere better. 5. Better heat insulator Dry wood is a better thermal insulator than wet wood. 2005 AWI/AWMAC 8th Edition Quality Standards 2005 AWI/AWMAC 8th Edition Quality Standards ~ 100 ~

TECHNICAL INFORMATION Grading and production of lumber: Tech Info After the lumber is dried it is surfaced on both sides and then graded. Most lumber follow the grading rules of the National Hardwood Lumber Association. There are a few different grades of a wood species and these typically are Select & Better (S&B), #1 Common, and #2A. Select & better contains your clearest cuttings and #2A contains your largest knots and most character. For more information on the different species and their grades please visit http://www.ahec.org/hardwoods/grading.html and download the illustrated grading rules guide. Unless specified lengths or manufacturing procedures are requested, all orders are manufactured as mill run. When random length footage is ordered the manufacturer has the choice of which lengths of products will be manufactured by following these guidelines 15% 13-16, 70% 9-12, & 15% 6-8 All lumber will comply with the National Hardwood Lumber Association grading rules, this means that the boards may contain natural characteristics such as knots, cracks, mineral streaks, or end splits the NHLA allows a percentage of clear cutting from each board. In woodworking the final end product is what is important and not whether the pieces were cut from a larger board that contained defects that could have been eliminated. During a mill run order of 1,000LF/RL the mill may send up to an additional 10% at no extra charge to compensate for defects. 2005 AWI/AWMAC 8th Edition Quality Standards If specific lengths are needed please be sure to identify the length needed and the quantity of each length. Note: If the finished piece of trim needs to be cut to 7 be sure to allow a minimum of 6-12 of over length when ordering to ensure enough material to work with on site. ~ 101 ~

If products are being stained a dark color it is highly recommended that a wood conditioner be used Seek advice from your finish supplier.
