GARY BANTLE, VC INVESTOR & ADVISOR Gary Bantle is currently an Angel investor with over 17 years of institutional venture capital experience focused on healthcare, life sciences and agriculture. Since 1998 and until recently, Gary was a Partner in the Healthcare Venture Fund at BDC Venture Capital where he was the lead investor on a number of venture capital transactions and an active Board member in over 15 venture backed companies including Monteris Medical, Agrisoma Biosciences, OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals and Circle Cardiovascular. Prior to joining BDC, Gary worked as a research scientist in the area of drug discovery for a number of pharmaceutical companies including Syntex (USA) and Boehringer Ingelheim. Since joining EDC in 2006, he has translated his past finance, structuring and origination experience into successfully growing his sector s strategic client base and development of key corporate initiatives raising the profile of this segment at EDC. Prior to joining EDC, Mr. Lopes spent over 9 years with Scotiabank in their International Corporate Banking group managing relationships in Latin America including Brazil and Mexico among others and since 2000 working in Mexico City as Scotiabank s Managing Director and Head of Loan Syndications, Project Finance, Correspondent Banking and Structured Trade Teams. He was also Managing Director and Head of DBRS (Canada s Credit Rating Agency) Consumer, Retail and Real Estate Corporate Group. Mr. Lopes holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Toronto, an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Windsor, an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University and currently completing his CPA designation.
LEE MCDONALD FOUNDER, PRESIDENT & CEO SOUTHMEDIC INC. Ms. McDonald is the founder and currently the President and CEO of Southmedic Inc. She has over 30 years of experience in the global Health Care Manufacturing and Distribution sectors. She has successfully led Southmedic, named one of Canada s Best Managed Companies (2010 2014), through several corporate restructurings and successful acquisitions and has extensive experience in developing and implementing corporate and operational strategies in multiple countries. With a strong sales, marketing and manufacturing track record in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia, Lee is recognized for her ability to lead multicultural sales and distribution teams. Lee has a Bachelor Degree in Nursing Science, BS from Queen s University and in 1996 she completed the Queen's University Executive Management Program. Lee has extensive volunteer board director experience and is a founding member of the Women Owners Network and continues as an advisor to members. At the request of the Provincial Economic Development Department she participated as a founding member of the Innovators Alliance Board which is mandated to unite CEO's of fast growing corporations. Her role on the board has provided invaluable support to Canadian SMEs to help them to become large, stable corporations. GREG OGRODNICK CEO CIRCLE CARDIOVASCULAR IMAGING INC. Mr. Greg Ogrodnick serves as the Chief Executive Officer at Circle Cardiovascular Imaging Inc.. Prior to joining Circle Cardiovascular Imaging, Mr. Ogrodnick co-founded Conceptis Technologies Inc., a leading medical media and education company whose main asset was theheart.org, and served as President since 1997. During his career Mr. Ogrodnick worked at leading healthcare and biotech companies including Baxter International and Genentech in various sales and management positions. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta and is an Executive in Residence for University Technologies International where he works with startup companies providing expertise in company formation, financing, strategic and business planning, recruitment of management, financial management and corporate governance. Mr. Ogrodnick s outstanding career at prominent healthcare, information technology, and biotech companies has given him exceptional insight into what it takes to make a business succeed and he brings extensive experience to his role. MATT PASIUK TRADE COMMISSIONER (SAN FRANCISCO) DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE DEVELOPMENT Matt Pasiuk is the Life Sciences Trade Commissioner at the Consulate General of Canada in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. In this role, he advises Canadian SMEs in biotech, medical device, health IT, imaging, and diagnostics. As a Trade Commissioner, Matt focuses on creating bilateral linkages between the Bay Area and the Canadian life sciences eco-system. To promote cross-border linkages, he works with regional stakeholders to identify specific collaboration, partnering, and investment opportunities which create strategic market entry points for Canadian industry entities. Matt has built programs like the Canadian Technology Accelerator program (CTA@SFLifeSciences) and the 2-day Dose of the Valley program to catalyze opportunities for Canadian innovators to interface with Bay Area industry players. Furthermore, he drives foreign direct investment by presenting the narrative of Canada s vibrant life sciences ecosystem to American and multinational pharmaceutical companies. Matt is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia and has spent the last 7 years in the United States. He worked at the Canadian Consulate in Denver prior to joining the San Francisco office in 2013. Matt holds a Master s degree in Global Affairs from the University of Denver, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Trinity Western University, and a Certificate in Leadership and Canadian Governmental Affairs from the Laurentian Leadership Centre.
MEET THE FACILITATOR JASON DING, CA, CBV, BSc FOUNDER, H2 TECHNOLOGY CONSULTING EXECUTIVE IN RESIDENCE, TEC EDMONTON AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR, TEC HEALTH ACCELERATOR In his role as an Executive-in-Residence at TEC Edmonton, as well as the Program Director of the TEC Health Accelerator, Jason is responsible for managing the activities of Alberta s largest Health Accelerator with a particular focus on working with Alberta Health Services and relationships with multi-national strategic partners. Jason Ding founded H2 Technology Consulting and is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Business Valuator. Prior to working at TEC, he was the Deputy Biotechnology leader for Deloitte in Canada, a Vice President & Director in Deloitte s corporate finance and valuation practice, and a financial auditor of public companies with KPMG. Jason has also been an executive for a number of early stage companies to assist them with licensing, merger & acquisition, valuation and financing transactions. Prior to working in the financial industry, Jason worked as a science reporter for CBC radio and as an Ombudsman for the University of Alberta.
