8 December 2006 Advertisement 160 The Falkland Islands Philatelic Study Group Founded 1970 The Group was founded following a meeting of some 50 collectors gathered together by Malcolm Barton, the current President. Membership grew rapidly, reaching 125 in 1972, 220 in 1976 and 425 in 2005. The Group is truly international in its membership structure. The objects of the Group are to research into all aspects of philately connected with the Falkland Islands and their former Dependencies, leading to the publication of findings and to foster Falkland Islands philately by all means including exchanging of information and philatelic material. Research is carried out by individual members, collated through a nominated leader for each subject. A weekend meeting takes place annually during which an Annual General Meeting is held. Meetings are also held on a regular basis in various parts of the UK and occasional meetings have been held in other countries, including USA, Australia, Norway, Sweden and the Falkland Islands. Members, whether beginners or advanced collectors, are encouraged to attend. The Upland Goose, a quarterly journal, is distributed to all members and to leading philatelic libraries. The publication has been awarded silver medals at international exhibitions. Members Sales and Wants are published with the journal without charge. Two auctions of members material are held each year, one a postal auction and the other live at the weekend gathering. Other material surplus to members requirements is available through a popular circulating packet, limited because of insurance constraints to subscribers within the UK. FIPSG is a member of ABPS and the American Philatelic Society. 8 December 2006 Obituaries: Moir and Shepherd 161 Geoffrey Douglas Moir (1921 2006) Geoff Moir died on 16th July 2006 from a heart attack following several years of deteriorating health which he coped with in typical manner, continuing a punishing programme of talks and displays in which he promoted the Falkland Islands and Dependencies in general and philately in particular. Geoff was born on 25th July 1921 and joined the Croydon Philatelic Society as early as 1936, thus completing 70 years membership. Following the outbreak of war in 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Air Force, attaining the rank of Flight Lieutenant and serving with great distinction as a Navigator/2nd Pilot in No 97 Pathfinder Squadron, Bomber Command, during which he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and flew no less than 65 missions in Lancasters. Following demobilisation in 1945 Geoff became a schoolteacher at Ashburton High School until retirement in 1983. Anyone visiting Fairfield Halls, Croydon, for the annual Falkland Islands week cannot fail to have been impressed by the high regard in which he was held by the local population for his educational standards at Ashburton which clearly embraced self-discipline, loyalty, dedication and other qualities which today tend to be regarded as old-fashioned. I first met Geoff around 1971 following an approach to the Falkland Islands Company for help to advance the interest of his pupils in ornithology. I was able to help and a long friendship developed which culminated in 1982 in my offering him the post of schoolteacher at the Company's sheep farm at Fox Bay West, Falkland Islands. We had experienced problems there with education and this was unsettling for parents. Geoff left Brize Norton in August 1982, flying to Ascension and there boarding the ferry Keren to Stanley, flying to Fox Bay East and completing the journey to Fox Bay West by Land Rover. He transformed education at Fox Bay to the relief of everyone, not least me. The class size was small with much age variation but Geoff's standards and general impact resulted in friendships and appreciation which continued until his death. He had to return to the U.K in 1986 for health reasons and although eager to return to the Islands we could not accede because of his health. He did, however, make one return visit at the invitation of the Government and even managed a trip to South Georgia. Geoff had a long full life which he enjoyed to the full. He will be sorely missed by his many friends in the Falkland Islands Philatelic Study Group, the Polar Postal History Society, the Croydon Philatelic Society and the Falkland Islands Association, all of which were represented at the funeral service in Croydon on 31st July 2006, including one former Governor of the Islands, David Tatham. FRANK MITCHELL Acknowledgement Bernard Conway, Croydon Philatelic Society. (Bill Featherstone adds his own appreciation: although recognising Geoff s enthusiasm and interest in the philately of the Falklands and Antarctica, members might not place him at the highest level in the pantheon of Falklands collectors but, and it is a very big but indeed, as a promoter of, and enthusiast for, all things Falklands he was nonpareil. The thousands of miles he travelled each year to talk not only to philatelic societies but also to Women s Institute branches, National Trust groups, church fellowships and basically any other group that would listen have no equal. Whether his theme was philatelic or general he was really only selling one thing the Falkland Islands and the way of life of its people. If you listened to him his pride in the young people of the Falklands was abundantly clear and he embraced the changes that have allowed more of them to make a career in their homeland. The Islands and Islanders have lost a strong voice and many of us have lost a good friend with Geoff s passing.) Col Philip Shepherd (1928 2006) Born in Weston super Mare, Philip was the son of Rev. Frederick and Dorothy Shepherd, and elder brother to Andrew. He attended Lancing College, and joined the Army in 1946, proceeding to Sandhurst and Shrivenham. He served in Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Germany. He took part in the Blue Nile Expedition of 1968 as the Senior Military Officer and in the Dahlak Islands Expedition of 1970 as Topographical Surveyor. He retired from the MoD in 1978, joining the Orion Royal Bank and was appointed a Director of the Royal Bank of Canada in 1985. He retired in 1993, but continued for some years as a Management Consultant. His life-long love of philately began when his mother gave him an album and a packet of stamps when aged 6 years. A few years later he spotted a 1935 Silver Jubilee double flagstaff from a stamp shop and bought it for the grand sum of 3/-. Fully appreciating its significance, the event fired his enthusiasm and his collection continued to grow. When abroad, he would collect the local stamps but later he chose to specialise in just the Falkland Islands and Dependencies. He was fascinated by their postal history and enjoyed the challenge of searching out varieties and scarce items. Philip married Sylvia in 1957 and they had two daughters, one of whom predeceased him in 1999. He met Erika in 1970 and they remained loving companions.

I wonder much how they could be jealous of our settling in this miserable Country, where I assure you, it is hardly possible to bring up any Produce to the smallest Perfection; more especially as they have the fine Country of Buenos Ayres so near. At any Rate, we can never defend a Settlement in this Part; so that it will be always a Prey to the Spaniards if they chuse it. Also an early German print recording the custom of the Dutch to visit the Pinguinische Inselen to reprovision with an illustration of the sailors capturing and clubbing the birds, and a portrait print of Henry Cary, the 1st Lord Falkland (1807 etching), both framed and glazed. (3 items) Ex Moir. 120-150 1643 1852 (June) General Post Office notice Mails for the Falkland Islands announcing the monthly despatch of mails by the Brazil Packet to Montevideo and thereafter by sailing packet as recently contracted with the Falkland Islands Company, at the usual Colonial Packet rate with free conveyance of newspapers; also 1908 (July 4) report of Letters Patent proclaiming the attachment of South Georgia etc. to the colony of the Falkland Islands as official Dependencies and the Governor s authority thereover, mounted in three glazed frames. Ex Moir. Photo on page 169. 200-250 1647 1878 July 2 front of lettersheet to Bristol bearing Great Britain 1873-80 6d. grey, pl. 15 PA, cancelled by F.1 datestamp with SOUTHAMPTON/AU 7/78/SHIP LETTER c.d.s. alongside, minor imperfections. Carried on the Black Hawk on the July 2 sailing. R.P.S. certificate (2000). Although the first Falkland Islands stamps were available from June 19, their use has not been recorded on this sailing and the last recorded use of the Red Franks is on that of May 15 (see lot 1645). As the islands did not join the U.P.U. until 1879 it would appear that the pre-franked lettersheet was accepted on the day of sailing as valid for use within a British possession by the island postmaster and the item subsequently passed through the mails without attracting postage due markings.
