KITCHEN FIELD TRIP LESSON PLAN 1/2 3/4 2/16 Grade 4 Mathematics Unit 8

Grade 4 Mathematics (Unit 8) UNIT ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Hw can yu use mdels t cmpare custmary units f length? Hw can yu use mdels t cmpare custmary units f liquid vlume? Hw can yu make and interpret line plts with fractinal data? BENCHMARK DESCRIPTION: MAFS.4.MD.1.1 Knw relative sizes f measurement units within ne system f units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, z.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system f measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms f a smaller unit. Recrd measurement equivalents in a tw-clumn table. Fr example, knw that 1 ft is 12 times as lng as 1 in. Express the length f a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a cnversin table fr feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36) MAFS.4.MD.1.2 Use the fur peratins t slve wrd prblems 1.invlving distances, intervals f time, and mney, including prblems invlving simple fractins r decimals 2. Represent fractinal quantities f distance and intervals f time using linear mdels. (1See glssary Table 1 and Table 2) (2Cmputatinal fluency with fractins and decimals is nt the gal fr students at this grade level.) MAFS.4.MD.2.4 Make a line plt t display a data set f measurements in fractins f a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Slve prblems invlving additin and subtractin f fractins by using infrmatin presented in line plts. Fr example, frm a line plt find and interpret the difference in length between the lngest and shrtest specimens in an insect cllectin. VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT: Cup Fluid Ounce Galln Half-Galln Pint Quart Centimeters Feet Inches ASSESSMENT: Can students identify the meaning f the vcabulary wrds? Are students able t answer prbing questins during discussin? Fllw up wrksheet and bservatin sheet 2

INSTRUCTIONAL: Read thrugh the lessn plan. Take nte f prep instructins in each exercise labeled Befre the students arrive. Intrduce yurself and staff t students. Describe the lessn and what they will be ding. Review behavir expectatin and safety rules. Stress NO TOUCHING f equipment because it may be HOT r SHARP. Give students a tur f the kitchen. KITCHEN TOUR: Give students hairnets. Take students n a tur f the kitchen taking time t intrduce fractins and hw they are used in the kitchen. Shw all the different tls we use t measure with and their related fractins such as 1/2 cup spdle. When tur is cmplete give each student an bservatin sheet and pencil. Exercise I Measuring Different Objects Befre the students arrive: Pull allergy list fr the class and check fr allergens against Rice Krispies Treat and chclate milk Gather the fllwing items and have them laid ut at a statin in yur kitchen Scps Ladles Spatulas Whisks Pastry blender Pt hlders PC packets Silverware Paper bats Other randm kid safe items f different lengths After the students arrive: Have the abve items laid ut n 2 r 3 tables Break students int 2-3 grups and assign them a table Give each student an bservatin sheet, a measuring tape, and a ruler Ask the grup t try and select an bject that is clse t 1 ft in length Have them write the bject they selected and then measure it and recrd the actual length n their bservatin sheet. Think abut a part f yur arm r leg that is clse t a ft Discuss hw clse they gt and why they thught the bject was clse t a ft Repeat asking them t select an bject they think clse is 20cm, 6 inches, and 300 millimeters. Have students measure the bjects after they have selected them and recrd n their bservatin sheet Ask hw they did? Ask hw knwing measurements f everyday bjects can be helpful? Review the kitchen items that were used with the students and explain what they are used fr and if they help yu measure Give each student a Rice Krispies treat and tell them nt t pen it. Have them measure it in feet, inches, centimeter, and millimeters. Have them recrd n their bservatin sheet 3 Have them keep the Rice Krispies Treat with them, but d nt eat it

Exercise II - Ordering Fractins Befre the students arrive: Gather tw t three sets f measuring spns r cups After the students arrive: Give each grup a set f measuring spns, nt in rder Have each grup arrange the measuring spns in rder frm smallest t largest Have them draw n their bservatin sheet a line plt f the spns Exercise III - Vlume Measures Befre the students arrive: Gather 16 chclate milk cartns Large clear measuring pitcher After the students arrive: Bring students tgether int ne large grup Let students lk at the milk cartn and try t figure ut what the vlume is Ask students what the vlume f the milk is? If they say 8 fluid unces r ½ pint, ask hw many cups that is Open 1 cartn and pur int a measuring cup t demnstrate that it is ne cup Have the students recrd the vlume f the milk cartn n their bservatin sheet Pass a large galln measuring cup arund s students see the different measurements and what a galln is Ask students hw many cartns f chclate milk it will take t make 1 galln Pur milk cartns 1 at a time int galln measuring cup. Stp at a pint and talk abut hw many cups it tk t get t a pint. S is a cartn a half pint? Stp at a quart and talk abut hw many cartns r cups it tk Stp at ½ galln and talk abut hw many cups it tk t make a ½ galln When yu get t a galln, review the measurements and talk abut them in terms f cups Pur chclate milk int small serving cups and give each student 1. Have students g ut int cafeteria t eat their Rice Krispies Treat and drink their milk RESOURCES: Observatin Sheets Pencils Tape Measures Rulers TAKE AWAYS: Wrksheet Teacher aid Rice Krispies Treat Chclate Milk TOPICS: Talk abut different measures and hw we measure different bjects Talk abut hw the fractins add up t make whles and different measures add up t new measures 4
