CAROLYN M. SPARKS As a lifelong resident of Clark County, Carolyn Sparks humanitarian efforts for the community are many and varied, from her earliest involvement as area chairman for the American Cancer Society and fund-raiser for Junior Mesquite Club and Home of the Good Shepherd to her current work with the Nevada Children's Center, and span 35 years. She started the Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation (now known as the University Medical Center Foundation), the Children's Miracle Network Telethon and the Nevada Children's Center (formally called the Las Vegas Center For Children) and the Nevada Children's Center Foundation. She has had a longtime commitment to the University & Community College System of Nevada and served two six year terms, 1984-1996, on the Board of Regents. Her work with Junior League of Las Vegas over the last 34 years has allowed her to work on two historic preservation projects (the Beckley House and the Morelli House), along with many advocacy and hands-on projects for children. She was an original board member of the State Parks Cultural Arts Board and has served on the boards of Southern Nevada Best Coalition, Las Vegas Museum of Natural History, Nevada Ballet Theater and the Clark County Panhellenic Association. Mrs. Sparks and her husband, Kenneth, founded International Insurance Services, Ltd. in 1966 and she is still acting President. Mrs. Sparks was appointed by then Governor Richard Bryan to the Statewide Committee for the Funding of Higher Education in 1987. She was also appointed by Governor Bob Miller as the Statewide Co-Chairman of the State of Nevada's 125th Anniversary Committee for 1989-1990 and in 2004, she was appointed to the Nevada State Taxi Cab Authority by Governor Kenny Guinn. In 1982, Mrs. Sparks was honored as the "Clark County Community Service Mother of the Year." In 1981, she received the Community Volunteer Service Award and "Person of the Year" for the University Medical Center Auxiliary in 1978. Mrs. Sparks served on the Board of Directors for the Showboat Hotel & Casino from 1991 until it was sold to Harrah s. She followed her father, Fred Morledge, who was one of the builders and original partners and served on the Board until his retirement at age 89. She was on the Board of Directors of PriMerit Bank from 1988 until it merged with another banking institution and she was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of Southwest Gas Corporation. She remains active with the International Women s Forum and the Rotary Club of Las Vegas. She is also a Past President of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. She was born January 7, the daughter of Frederick L. and Malvina W. Morledge. She attended the University of California, Berkeley where she earned a B.A. degree in Speech and Communication Arts. She was married to Kenneth Sparks (deceased) on June 27, 1964, and is the mother of four children, Katherine Elizabeth, Robert Kenneth, Jonathan Frederick (deceased) and Patricia Marie.
