Service Portfolio 3 Stable Communication Communication by radio is often the only way for rescue teams and road maintenance services to stay in contact with one another. A tunnel generally interrupts the communications flow. The tunnel radio systems from STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions enable safe and stable communication connection even in a tunnel. STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions has developed a tunnel radio system that offers the emergency services, such as the police, rescue and fire brigade, as well as road maintenance services, in particular, a way of ensuring communication in tunnels for all common radio systems. This not only contributes to greater traffic safety, but also provides a quick and often life-saving connection with the outside world. A continuous and fault-free radio connection in a tunnel can be the determining factor between life and death in the event of a catastrophe. It enables rescue teams to communicate with the external mission control centre without interruption. In addition, it enables road users to be precisely supplied with essential informationvia the FM public radio programs transmitted in the tunnel. This avoids illconsidered action and panic. Connection to existing networks The tunnel radio systems from STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions are connected to existing free-field radio networks of the emergency services and road maintenance services in such a way that the radio communication in the tunnel is the same as outside the tunnel, i.e. without restrictions. Thanks to the modular set-up of the tunnel radio solutions from STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions, different versions can be realised. Realisation in the head-end station by means of transposer converter, but also the alternative of frequency repeating technology isprovided. In the tunnel, the preparation is carried out in broadband, band selective or channel selective technology depending on the, in particular, used frequency spectrum as well as whether a single or two cable solution is projected. The systems must be calculated and planned in every case so that the required field strength values are ensured within the tunnel. 4 STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions Tunnel Radio The System in Detail The head-end station, containing the transmitter and receiver, processes the radio signals to be fed in from the free-field and transmitted to the HF routing system. Connection between the head-end station and the amplifier stations is either by means of coaxial feed lines or via optical transmission lines. The distribution network between the head-end station and amplifier stations is generally set up in a star formation. Of course, according to respective requirements, the transport system can also be set up with built-in redundancy. The amplifier stations process the signals, amplify them and feed them to the tunnel antennas. So-called radiating cables are preferable for use as tunnel antennas. They are coaxial cables with openings in the outer conductors, through which the electromagnetic waves are coupled or uncoupled. The amplifiers are Class A amplifiers that balance the attenuation losses of the feeder cables and the radiating cables on the one hand, and amplify the signal so that the required level is achieved in the tunnel on the other. All radio channels can be transmitted in parallel without mutual interference. To meet the future requirements of tunnel radio systems, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions has developed a new concept. This enables both the increased feed of new private broadcasting as well as the new digital trunked radio technology in tunnel radio systems. Naturally, this new concept also takes into account the increased requirements for fail-safe operation in the event of damage. The further developed systems are not only more economic and lower maintenance than previous ones, but now also support a wider range of radio services in the tunnel.

Service Portfolio 5 For greater fail-safe operation STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions places the highest possible focus on fail-safe operation in the planning of tunnel radio systems. Thus, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions offers the possibility of interconnection of the leaky cable segments in the event of detected failures (short-circuit or idle state). A leakage cable switch is installed here between the respective segments and behaves as an impedance-correct termination during operation. No additional control and voltage supply lines are required. But not only in the area of the tunnel antennas, but also in the area of the optical transmission systems, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions has developed concepts for maximisation of the fail-safe operation.

6 STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions Tunnel Radio Secure communication in the tunnel A tunnel radio system must be available to 100 % as far as possible for the communication of the emergency services is guaranteed when required and for road users to be precisely supplied with information via the fed-in FM public radio channels. Monitoring For this reason, the functioning of the tunnel radio system is continuously monitored during operation. Besides the monitoring of the transmitter and receiver devices in the head-end station, the optical transmission units, the voltage supply components and amplifier units in the remote stations are also monitored. Not only are the components monitored, but the transport (fibre optic cable) and radiating cables are also included in the monitoring concept. With the CPM 3300 Cable Pilot Monitoring System developed by STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions, the radiating and transport cables are permanently monitored for short-circuit and interruption. All alarm messages can be transmitted to a superordinate control system via the network management system. Besides transmission by means of network management system, there is also the possibility of providing the alarm messages via potential-free contacts. Netzwork Management System The network management system from STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions was specially designed for use in radio systems of road or rail tunnels. The NMS system not only enables the complete remote control and monitoring of the tunnel radio system from a central point, but also expands the tunnel radio system in terms of intelligent fault management, remote access as well as central monitoring and data logging of all relevant system parameters. The integration in superordinate control systems can be carried out using a variety of possible protocols, e.g. Modbus TCP-IP, IEC60870-5-101, etc. The communication with the amplifier stations in the tunnel via NMS is carried out over the HF optical fibre system of the tunnel radio system, so that no additional control lines are necessary. The otherwise usually common transmission of fault messages by PLC can be omitted, which can lower the set-up costs. NMS is not only simply the transmission of fault messages, there is also the possibility of accessing all components of the system from a central point and to parametrise them if required. Any closing of the tunnel for fault analysis and application of the first measures can thus be prevented.
