WELCOME The National Alumni Association newsletter is geared to highlight NAK alumni, showcase developments at local alumni associations, feature alumni brothers who are doing great things in their communities, and keep our brotherhood update on the grand scope of the NAA. While this is our inaugural newsletter, our goal is to publish a national newsletter either bi-annually or quarterly to establish regular communication. If you have future updates that you would like to be included in the NAA newsletter, please contact director of planning & marketing Juan V López (juan.v.lopez@nakinc.org). All chartered alumni associations can contribute information into this publication. We hope you enjoy and find value in the inaugural NAA newsletter! - Angel Barajas, National Alumni Association, CEO @NUALPHAKAPPA NUALPHAKAPPA.ORG #NAKALUMNI 1

Backpack Give-Back Drive The National Alumni Association led a backpack giveaway of more than 500 backpacks to a low-income elementary school in the Bay Area in mid-august. On Thursday, August 13, the National Alumni Association led a backpack giveaway drive to Rosemary Elementary School, where more than 85 percent of the students are on free or reduced lunch. The NAA raised more than $1300 to purchase 525 new backpacks to give one to EVERY student at Rosemary Elementary in San Jose (1st-5th grades). More than 90 percent of these students are Latino/a. NAK alumni care deeply about our communities of which lowincome students reside in, said Angel Barajas, CEO of the NAK National Alumni Association. Upwards of 90% of our alumni brothers come from a disadvantaged background, so, we understand that investing in our youth is an investment in our community. Sergio Andrade (NAA director of membership), Marlon Cuellar (former NAA director of scholarship) and Angel along with 6 other Bay Area NAK alumni attended this event. We are very proud of this effort and are planning to make further contributions like this at other NAK communities so we can continue to inspire our youth and pay it forward. 2015 NAA Scholarship Applications Open The 2015 NAK Alumni Association Scholarship applications are open! At Pledgefest 2015 at Tau Chapter (Pomona), 1 to 2 national scholarships worth $500 dollars will be awarded this year to NAK brothers who uphold our pillars of Academics, Brotherhood & Culture. An emphasis will be placed on brothers who have demonstrated either strong financial need and/or active involvement within NAK and their community. The Arreola Family Award will be awarded to up to four students during the 2015-2016 academic year. The Arreola Family award is a gift made by the Arreola Family in honor of Marin F. Arreola and Carmen H. Arreola; the Grandmother and Grandfather of NAK founding fathers Antonio V. Arreola, Nicolas V. Arreola, Marin A. Arreola, Nicolas V. Arreola, Gabriel Z. Arreola, Enrique V. Arreola, Ricardo A. Arreola and NAK Brothers Manuel Z. Arreola, Alejandro V. Arreola, and Agustin V. Arreola. This is the second time we are offering these scholarships and we are truly excited to offer them to you! The inaugural NAK National Scholarships were awarded to brother Orlando Villa (Eta Chapter, middle left) and brother Eric Uribe (Omicron Chapter, middle right) in 2014 at Pledgefest in Sacramento. NAK Alumni Association Scholarships Facts Only WHO CAN APPLY: All undergraduate and graduate brothers DEADLINE: Midnight Saturday, October 24 AWARDS: 1 to 2 NAK Scholarships worth $500-$1,000 and 1 to 4 Arreola Family Awards worth $500-$1,000 will be awarded QUESTIONS: Contact National Director of Scholarship Jerry Gaytan at gerardo.gaytan@nakinc.org APPLY: NAKnet.org/scholarships/ Brother Marlon Cuellar s Donation Highlights Bronze Supper 2015 The 3rd annual Bronze Supper was held on Saturday, August 14, 2015 during the National Leadership Development Conference (NLDC) at the University of Nevada, Reno. We were able to raise nearly $3,650 from NAK Alumni donations. Money raised went the National Scholarship Fund and the Omicron Alumni Association s scholarship program as seed money. It was our fourth consecutive successful Bronze Supper fundraiser (2014 NLDC at Phi Chapter, 2014 Pledgefest at Iota Chapter and 2015 NAKfest at Phi Chapter). Brother Marlon Cuellar (former director of scholarship) led the way with a $2,500 donation. Marlon s donation is planned to be matched and even tripled by his employer, the CA Endowment, bringing the grand total to a whopping $10,000. Marlon said his goal is to give to an organization that has given so much to him while inspiring brothers to do the same. Many brothers have no idea that their employer would match, double or even triple their donation to a non profit organization of their choice, Marlon said. Employers in the corporate or philanthropic sector often provide these incentives to employees. We encourage brothers with a similar employer as Marlon to consider donating and seeing their contribution go to a great cause! @NUALPHAKAPPA NUALPHAKAPPA.ORG #NAKALUMNI 3

NAA Fact-Checker The Following Are National Alumni Association Facts For Your Knowledge... Omicron AA Launching Mentorship Program The NAA Pro-Temp Board was established in early 2014. The NAA was enacted in November 2014 when its Constitution and Bylaws were ratified. The NAA established its 501(c) (3) non-profit status in March 2015, thanks to the diligent work of former national treasurer Sandro Aguilar (former National Treasurer) The NAA has executed 4 successful Bronze Supper scholarship fundraiser events: 2014 NLDC at Phi Chapter ($4,000 raised) 2014 Pledgefest at Iota Chapter ($4,188 raised) 2015 NAKfest at Phi Chapter ($2,300 raised) 2015 NLDC at Omicron Chapter ($3,643 raised) Upcoming Bronze Supper dates: Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Tau Chapter (Pomona) for Pledgefest Saturday, April 23 at Lambda Chapter (San Diego) for NAKfest Saturday, August 13, 2015 for NLDC There are three (3) major items needed to officially establish your own locally chartered alumni association: 1) Constitution and Bylaws, 2) Membership roster, and 3) $300 prorated dues. Interested and ready to go? Contact Sergio Andrade (Sergio.andrade@nakinc. org) today and get started! 4 The Omicron Chapter Alumni Association was established in August 2015. The newly established Omicron Alumni Association at the University of Nevada is launching an alumni mentorship program as part of its pledging process this semester. The goal of the OAA Mentorship program is to enhance the experience of NAK prospective members by connecting them with NAK alumni who will mentor them on professional, personal and relational development. Each prospective member will be matched up with one Omicron alumni mentor. The relationship between the mentor and little brother would be more professional and big-picture focused than that of pledge and personal big brother. The goal is to give pledges bigger picture into life as a NAK after school, help them with their career development, aid with retainment, and show them how to balance a busy lifestyle, among other things. What we re doing here is connecting pledges with respectable, honorable and well-put together NAK alumni early in their process so they can get a glimpse into the bigger picture of being a brother, and not just what comes with being a NAK undergraduate, said Juan V López, the CEO of the OAA. Our goals are to not only help the little brother develop into more of a well-rounded brother, but also to indoctrinate them into life as a NAK alumni so they can continue to contribute even after graduating. The OAA said its goal is to clearly identify impact measures of this program and use the inaugural year of this program as a case study to hopefully see mentorship programs like this established at more chapters. Doing Something Awesome? Be Highlighted! Is your alumni association doing something noteworthy? Contact us to be highlighted in a future NAA newsletter and share your great work with the rest of NAK nation! @NUALPHAKAPPA NUALPHAKAPPA.ORG #NAKALUMNI
