Shire Amateur Photographers Society Our aim is not to compete against each other rather, to learn from each other Greg Ford 0415 412 244 (9528 3475) Website: www.sutherlandshirephotography.com.au Email: gfphoto@optusnet.com.au S.A.P.S. (Shire Amateur Photographers Society) https://www.flickr.com/groups/saps/pool/ Shire Amateur Photographers Society (SAPS) https://www.facebook.com/groups/shireamateur/ https://www.sutherlandshirephotography.com.au/blackboard/ Newsletter No. 195 (29/06/2018) Hi Everybody, For those that had the opportunity to see the Girt by Sea exhibition at Paddington Town hall this month, it was a really good opportunity to see some great photography of the Australian shoreline in a different way. The exhibition was quite extensive, with 100 images printed, large format, and under glass. For those that did not get the opportunity to see it, we will be reviewing some of the images and discussing them at the next photographic Society meeting on the 5 th July. Have a look at the video at the link below... Girt by Sea https://www.canon.com.au/explore/girt-bysea?gclid=cj0kcqjwvllzbrdrarisadu6ojc85vmvhgprjtslgi1jvsrdjhlh3_rssgjuuutio47z6hkduqumsw8 aankhealw_wcb&ef_id=wrgymgaaa2_puctv:20180622085125:s The first Mentoring outing was held to Sydney Park and the May Lane Graffiti on Sunday 17 th June. Thanks to the 15 people who attended. The format of walking with a buddy and discussing light & composition opportunities seemed to work well. We will have to do it more often... On Wednesday 20 th June, 12 or so of us spent the morning at Sophie s place, being showed the in s and out s of the Momento software Certainly an amazing product Thanks for the insight Sophie... Night & Day Mystery Tours were successful, with good numbers attending both activities. The Night Tour (23 rd June) took in Taren Point Bridge, May Lane Graffiti, St Peters & Newtown (but we won t talk about THAT ONE ) then Sydney University, with great opportunity to photograph the majestic stonework under lights. The Day Tour visited an area of Centennial Park that I had not visited before Lachlan Swamp (near the Duck Pond). From then we went to Paddington Town Hall to take in the Girt by Sea exhibition, and wonder around the fascinating Paddington Reservoir Gardens. This was followed by a walk through to Paddington Street (and beyond) taking in this terrace housed suburb. Finally, we fossicked, and found a great position at Swamp road, Tempe to photograph the aircraft on final approach, before landing at the airport. Thanks to all that participated We will do it all again at the next Night & Day Mystery Tours in September Stay tuned for dates MOBILE Phone found near Glebe A person rang me after finding a Society members phone at Glebe. The phone was locked but the last message on it was from me cancelling either a Sunday Ride or Walk. Ring me 0415 412 244 (Greg)

NEXT SOCIETY MEETING THURSDAY (5 th July - 7.15pm) 1 st floor Club on East (previously Sutherland United Services Club - SUS Club) opp. the car park - western side of Sutherland Station. 7.15pm start on 1 st floor. There is also a well-lit car park at the rear of the club. Just drive up to the boom gate, tell them you re there for Photographic meeting, and they will let you in. At reception, tell them you re going to the Photographic meeting upstairs, & they will sign you in arrive at 7pm for 7.15pm start GIRT by SEA Presentation (July meeting) This fascinating exhibition held at Paddington Town Hall in June, impacted differently with the members that attended. I personally found myself wanting to rotate some of the images to the way they were hung, while others preferred the way they were. I realised that because it was all aerial photography (looking straight down), there is no horizon line or architectural element restricting your viewpoint, and therefore you are looking at the composition of lines, colours, balance, textures and form. This DOES make it in the eyes of the beholder as far as the appeal, and to rotate or not. Some of these images seemed to be really worked to give a 3D impression, and also a more saturated style, that appeals to some (including me) Margarette Looney is going to come in on the discussion at the meeting, when we view and rotate some of the images for your opinion Olympus coming to the July Meeting Thanks to Tony at Digi Direct, Olympus is attending the July meeting to give a 30 min presentation on their gear. We have asked that running through the full range of camera lenses & bodies - entry type level up might be a better way of appealing to more of our membership. This presentation will be given just before the break, so you can discuss cameras and lenses with them during the break at the back of the room. PRINT & DISPLAY Another idea that came up from the Steering Committee, was to have a Print & Display night as part of a future Society meeting. All of us have images that we have thought - wouldn t it be nice to print some and put them on my wall SO NOW IS YOUR CHANCE A good friend of mine, Peter from Southern Framing at Sylvania, as offered the following sizes to print on archival paper, and mount on core flute (ready-to-frame) for Society members. Format Mount size Image size 3:2 510 x 380 430 x 300 3:2 760 x 510 680 x 430 16:9 760 x 430 680 x 350 1:2.1 1016 x 480 940 x 400

Prices will be available at the next Society meeting on 5 th July and will be in the next Newsletter just after the meeting. So, why not pick out 1, 2, or any number of your images, put full size files on a USB (with your name), and hand in to the desk at the next meeting, or send to Greg by WeTransfer, when the price is confirmed. We are looking to Print & Display for the September Meeting. Images will need to be submitted by the latest the August Meeting, so plenty of time to go through you images and get something on your walls. Payment for printing and mounting by cash at the August meeting. We will display the images on tables around the room at the September meeting, for people to browse, then they can be taken away by their owners at the end of the meeting. Thanks Peter for the offer to do this for the Society members, at a very reasonable price, Greg IMAGES to submit and the way to name them (if possible) For Outings & Tasks please submit 3 images renamed as below, thank you For Snowy Mountains Trip Away (submit 20) For Eric s Western Wanderer Trip Away (submit 30) + people shots You can send your renamed images by the WeTransfer program, up to Monday 2 nd July. Will be shown at future Society Meeting Presentations. If you need help with sending with WeTransfer, give me a call (0415 412 244) Renamed files to show: your name Activity Year & month (as below) Renaming Filename examples: Greg Ford IRONFEST 2018-04 Greg Ford DAROOK PARK 2018-04 Greg Ford SNOWY MTS 2018-04 Greg Ford ERIC S WW 2018-05 Greg Ford VIVID 2018-06 Greg Ford SYDNEY PARK 2018-06 Greg Ford SYMMETRY 2018-06 Greg Ford NIGHT MYSTERY TOUR 2018-06 Greg Ford DAY MYSTERY TOUR 2018-6 Greg Ford FOGGY 2018-10 Activities to remember to submit images held in June are HIGHLIGHTED in RED
