shaver to get rid of pills. If the item doesn t contain a pipe cleaner or glue, you could even run it through the washing machine. Wool felt will wear better and last longer. If you re creating something that you d like to pass down from child to child, wool felt is best. If you plan to use wool felt, you may want to first practice on craft felt so you don t waste money on the more expensive stuff. I typically use eco-fi felt which is made of recycled plastic bottles. Let s get started! You will need the following to create your Felt Pumpkin Pie: Welcome! Today we re going to finish off our Thanksgiving Dinner Set with a big slice of pumpkin pie! Play food is a great beginner s sewing project and can be altered to make food as simple or as fancy as you d like. This tutorial will focus on creating the set with a sewing machine, but you could also hand sew the items. If you don t sew, you could use felt fabric glue to glue the pieces together. When making felt foods please keep the age of the child you re making the project for in mind. Children who still put things in their mouth should never be given small objects as these would pose a choking hazard. Felt in orange, tan, and white Polyfil to stuff the slice of pie Scissors Monofilament thread or coordinating thread Sewing machine Hand sewing needle The pumpkin pie slice template on the next page. Do not scale the file to fit, print as actual size When making felt food you can use whatever type of felt you desire. Craft felt is easy to work with, cheap and easily obtainable but it will not wear as well as wool felt. Craft felt may get pilly over time, but you can wash it with warm soapy water and use a lint Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 1

Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 2

1. Let s get started by cutting out all our pieces. You ll need one pumpkin pie top in orange, one pumpkin pie bottom in tan, one pumpkin pie side in orange, one pie crust back in tan, and one whipped cream in white. Go ahead and set your machine to a straight or triple stitch. 2. Take your top pumpkin pie piece and your side pumpkin pie piece. We want to make sure that we leave the short side of the pumpkin pie top open. Lay the pumpkin pie side piece with one long side aligned with a long side of the pumpkin pie top. Right sides of fabric should be together and make sure you let some of the pumpkin pie side hang over the edge. 3. Pin the side piece all around the top piece, easing around the corner and back down the other side. There will be some side piece left over and hanging off the edges. That s okay! Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 3

4. Take your pinned top and side piece to the machine and sew around the outer edges so that the two pieces are attached. You will need to be careful to only sew through two layers at a time (the top and side piece). Ease gently around the top corner, leave your needle down, and slowly pivot the piece when you re ready to go down the next side. Slowly easing around the top corner. See, that wasn t so bad! And the extra hanging off is OKAY! 5. Clip off the excess side piece as shown. Do this on both sides. Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 4

8. Your first step is done and you should have an attached top and side piece that looks like this. 7. Grab your pie bottom and line it up within the shell you just created, right side facing down. 9. Sew around the outer edge being careful that you are ONLY sewing through the pie bottom and side piece edges. Do NOT sew through the pie top piece. You may need to adjust the fabric as you sew around. Just as before, pivot at the corner. 8. Pin the pie bottom piece in place. Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 5

10. Now that we have our pie body, we re going to add the back crust. Take the crust and line it up so that the back evenly lies across the back of the pie body. You can trim the sides to fit better to originally cut too big than too small. You want the crust back to be EVEN with the bottom crust on the pie body but the top crust to OVERLAP the top of the pie body. Start pinning at the bottom, where the crust is even. You ll be leaving a 1-2 space open here for turning later. Continue pinning up the sides. If you didn t cut them to fit, you can fold them back and pin them in place. 11. When you get to the top portion, fold the excess crust neatly inside the pie body. This will create the top portion of the crust that sticks up when we flip our pie right side out. Once you get the crust tucked in and evenly in place, pin it all in place. Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 6

12. Once your crust is all pinned in place, this is what you ll have. 13. Take your pinned piece to the machine and start sewing around the edges, being careful not to catch more than two pieces of felt in the machine at a time. MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE 1-2 SPACE AT THE BOTTOM OPEN. This will be the area where crust meets crust. 14. When you get to the corner, keep your needle down, lift your presser foot and pivot the pie piece under the machine. Again, make sure your only sewing through two pieces of felt at time. You ll need to adjust and pivot the piece as you sew to ensure this. 15. Once you re done, this is what you ll have. <~~~~~~~~~~ Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 7

19. Insert your finger into the pie piece and turn it right side out. Use a point object (crochet hook, chop stick, pencil, etc) to push the corners and seams out nice and crisp. See how our crust hangs over the top? 17. Grab some polyfil and stuff your pie! Use your pointy object to evenly distribute the stuffing throughout the pie. 18. Once your pie is stuffed load a hand sewing needle and close up the hole we left for turning and stuffing. Just whip stitch the hole shut, tie off your thread and clip it. I normally bury the thread end inside the seam so it s hidden but nice and secure. Set the pie aside. 19. Grab your piece and a hand sewing needle. Fold the piece so that two corners are touching and stitch them together. 20. Grab another corner and stitch to the first two. Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 8

21. Grab the fourth corner and stitch it to the first three. 22. Continue going around the and pulling in corners until you have the shape you want. I usually pull in about 8 total, which includes our first four. Once you have the shape you want, tie off the thread but don t snip it. 23. Pick the spot on your pie where you want to place your and insert your needle with the still attached. Pull the thread tight and take several securing stitches all the way around the until it is fully secured to your pie. When finished, knot your thread, bury it and snip off the remainder. You re done! You can create just one slice for your meal or you can create a few slices to make up a whole play pie. Change the side and top piece color to create different flavors for different seasons! Pumpkin Pie Sewing Tutorial 9
