Nazmul, Anna and Rosie can t wait to start at St Helen s Primary School

What happens when I get to school? When you get to school, you say goodbye to your grown-up at the door. Your teacher will be waiting to take you up to your classroom. When you get to your classroom, you hang up your coat on your coat hook put your book bag in the tray and put your water bottle in the box. Bye Mum and Dad, says Rosie. You are going to have so much fun today, says Rosie s dad. Then you sit on the carpet and your teacher will take the register to check who is at school that day. Your teacher will also ask you what you would like for lunch. Hello Anna, says the teacher. Are you excited about starting school? 2 Hello, says Anna, I am so excited about coming to school. 3

How will I make friends? You will make friends by doing activities and playing with the other children in your class. Rosie and Anna are doing some craft work together. Nazmul, Rosie and Anna are playing on the climbing frame. Let s pretend we are pirates on a boat, says Nazmul. Yes, says Rosie. I ll look out for some sharks in the sea. Anna is making some loud noises on the climbing frame. Quick hide, she says. that sounds like sharks coming, The children are having lots of fun playing together. I have drawn a tree and I m cutting it out now, says Anna. That s a good idea, says Rosie. Can I draw some apples to go on your tree? Rosie and Anna enjoy making a picture together. Nazmul is playing on the tricycle outside. He is racing up and down with some friends. What do you like doing with your friends? 4 5

What If I am hungry or thirsty? At lunch-time you will go to the canteen. Friendly dinner ladies will help you get your favourite food. When you have your lunch, you will sit at a table with your friends to eat it. Nazmul and Anna are tucking into their lunch. In the afternoon, you can have a snack of fruit and a drink of water or milk. You will sit at a table in your classroom with your friends to have your snack. Anna likes it when drinking her milk turns the straw white. Nazmul loves apples and Rosie s favourite snack is banana. This is so tasty, says Anna. Yes, says Nazmul. It s my favourite. Rosie is looking forward to having a jacket potato. What is your favourite food? 6 7

What will I do at school? There are lots of fun things to do at school. You will look at books, do craft, play with construction toys, do number work, work with your teacher and lots more. What If I need to go to the toilet? If you need to go to the toilet, put your hand up to let your teacher know, and ask if you can go to the toilet. Rosie is doing some number work. Nazmul is playing dinosaurs with his new friend Thomas. Anna has been to the toilet. She is washing her hands. Everything here is so easy to use, she says. It is all just the right height for me. And these taps go on without me touching them. It s like magic! Oh no, the dinosaur has tried to bite my finger, says Nazmul. You are so funny, laughs Thomas. Anna is having some quiet time and looking at a book about animals. When she has washed her hands, she makes sure she dries them carefully before going back to the classroom. What are you looking forward to doing? Can you go to the toilet by yourself? 8 9

What happens at the end of the school day? When it is home-time, you collect your book bag, your water bottle, and put on your coat. Your teacher will take you back down the stairs to the door which leads to the playground. When your teacher sees your grown-ups outside, they will call your name and let you go out to meet them. Nazmul, Anna and Rosie are in the playground with their grown-ups. The children are excited about telling them about all the fun they have had today. It was brilliant fun dad, says Anna. I have so much to tell you, she says. Nazmul, Anna and Rosie can t wait to come back tomorrow. When are you coming to school? 10 11
