SPEAKERS Catherine Bibbey, Barrister, Christchurch Catherine commenced legal practice in 1986 and since then has specialised in providing advice in the taxation area. Her particular area of interest is advising clients involved in disputes with Inland Revenue. She was counsel in two important Court of Appeal cases dealing with GST issues that will be discussed at the conference. As well as being an author for Brooker s Smart Tax Catherine is also a consultant editor of CCH s Lawyer s Tax Companion and a past member of the New Zealand Law Society s Taxation Committee. Jane Chart, Senior Lecturer, School of Law, University of Canterbury Jane has had extensive experience as both a trainer and practitioner of negotiation and mediation. She has advised on and designed dispute resolution procedures in a variety of contexts in New Zealand and overseas. Over the past 25 years Jane has conducted workshops for a wide range of groups, including private law firms, judges, managers, accountants, government departments, engineers and community organisations. She teaches a course on Negotiation, Mediation and the Lawyer in the School of Law at the University of Canterbury, as well as teaching negotiation in the LLM and MBA and the Professional and Executive programmes. Thomas Gibbons, Partner, McCaw Lewis Chapman, Hamilton Thomas specialises in property development and commercial law, regularly advising on subdivisions, development projects, company share structures, shareholder agreements, securities law, general business matters and charitable trusts. He has recently updated a student text on trusts and has written extensively on property and commercial topics for publications such as the NZ Law Journal, Butterworths Conveyancing Bulletin, the NZ Conveyancing and Property Reports, and the Waikato Law Review. Thomas has also taught property law in the legal executive programme at the Waikato Institute of Technology. Sean Gollin, Partner, Minter Ellison Rudd Watts, Auckland Sean is a litigation partner based in the Auckland office. His particular areas of expertise are the commercial and litigation aspects of insolvency and restructuring law, the enforcement of securities, credit and financing agreements, banking recoveries and general creditors remedies action. Sean is a member of the New Zealand Law Society/Society of Accountants Joint Insolvency Committee, a member of INSOL New Zealand, and was a contributing author to Heath and Whale on Insolvency.

SPEAKERS Robert Hacking, Barrister, William Martin Chambers, Auckland Robert Hacking graduated from Otago University in 1984 and has practised in both Western Australia and England. Exclusively practising in family law, he has a particular interest in trusts, estates and relationship property disputes. Chris Kelly, General Counsel, Personal Client Services, NZ Guardian Trust, Wellington Chris Kelly has some 30 years experience as a lawyer specialising in trust and estate work. He is a co-author of the leading New Zealand legal text book on trusts: Garrow and Kelly Law of Trusts and Trustees (6th edition). Chris has also co-authored a number of other legal texts and publications and has presented a number of papers at NZLS conferences over the years. He is one of the authors of the recent 5th edition of Dobbie s Probate and Administration Practice. Chris is a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Patricia McConnell, Chair, Weathertight Homes Tribunal, Auckland Patricia (Trish) was appointed Chief Adjudicator of the Weathertight Homes Resolution Service in December 2006 and became Chair of the Weathertight Homes Tribunal on 1 April 2007. Prior to that she was the Principal Tenancy Adjudicator for five years. She is also the convenor of the New Zealand Chapter of the Council of Australasian Tribunals (COAT) and the vice chairman of the COAT executive. Trish has also worked as a barrister specialising in alternative disputes resolution and as a solicitor, both in private legal practice and with Community Law Centres. In addition she worked in the Philippines for two years with a community development organisation and has undertaken project work in Vietnam with the International Labour Organisation. Judge Neil MacLean, Chief Coroner, Auckland Judge MacLean has over forty years experience, firstly as a lawyer in private practice in Christchurch, then as a District Court judge in Gisborne and Hamilton. He was the Christchurch Coroner in the 1980s and early 1990s prior to appointment to the Bench in 1993. He was appointed the first Chief Coroner for New Zealand under the 2006 Coroners Act in December 2006. He is administratively based in the District Court buildings at Auckland.

SPEAKERS Usha Patel, Barrister, Auckland Usha is not only a very experienced family law practitioner, but she also has experience in criminal law, civil litigation and even conveyancing. Usha is a co-presenter in the NZLS workshop Introduction to Family Law Advocacy and Practice, which has been run for many years. She has been a barrister since 1996 specialising in all aspects of family law. Usha takes a keen interest in the development and policy aspects of family law and has been an executive member of the Family Law Section. Carol Peters, Principal, Legal Health, Whangaparaoa Carol is a lawyer and the principal of Legal Health. She has practised predominantly as a civil litigator since 1994 but has also developed a specialty in medical law and public health law. Carol has provided advice to District Health Boards, private healthcare organisations, individuals and insurers on a wide range of healthcare law issues and medically related insurance matters. She has a particular interest in consent issues and completed her LLM(Hons) by thesis on consent to medical treatment in 2006. Alison Wallis, Solicitor and Senior Instructor, College of Law NZ, Auckland Alison is a commercial and conveyancing lawyer of 20 years experience. She has practised in several high profile national firms both in Christchurch and Auckland, primarily in the area of commercial property. She is currently teaching Professional Legal Studies at the College of Law NZ, while also carrying out locum and contract assignments for law firms.
