(202yds/185m) pull skeins GAUGE: 2 Crocodile sts (see pattern for explanation) = about 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. STITCH EXPLANATION: Edc (extended double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. V-st (V-stitch) (Edc, ch 1, Edc) in indicated st. Crocodile st Note: Each Crocodile st is worked over 2 Edc sts. Rotate piece so that you can work around the post of the last Edc made (this is the 2nd Edc of a V-st), work 6 Edc around the post of the last Edc made, ch 1, rotate piece so that you can work around the post of the next Edc (this is the 1st Edc of the same V-st), work 6 Edc around the post of the next Edc. NOTES: 1. Shawl is worked from lower back point upwards in Crocodile and V-sts. Sts are increased on each to create a triangle. 2. Rows of V-sts are alternated with rows of Crocodile sts.
3. Crocodile sts are made by working sts around the post of sts in the previous row. 4. The piece is NOT turned at the beg of rows. Instead, at the beginning of EACH row, rotate the piece, keeping the RS facing you, so that you work back and forth across the RS of the piece. 5. A charm or button is sewed to the Shawl and can be pulled through the sts to fasten the Shawl. SHAWL Beg at lower back point of Shawl, ch 6; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. Row 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first Edc), (5 Edc, ch 1, 6 Edc) in ring (Crocodile st made); do not join. Push the Edc sts together at the bottom of the ring, leaving a straight top edge formed by the sides of the first and last Edc. Row 2 will be worked across this straight edge. Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as Edc, ch 1 in this row and in all following rows), do not turn, Edc in top of last Edc made (first V-st completed), ch 3, Edc in center ring, ch 3, V-st in top of beg ch - 2 V-sts, 1 Edc, and 2 ch-3 sps at the end of this row. Row 3 (Crocodile st row): Ch 1, do not turn, rotate the piece, keeping the RS facing so that you can work around the Edcs of the V-sts on the previous row, Crocodile st around first V-st, sl st in next Edc (this is the center Edc of Row 2), Crocodile st around last V-st - 2 Crocodile sts at the end of this row. Row 4 (V-st row): Ch 4, do not turn, rotate the piece, keeping the RS facing, so that you can work across the top of the previous row, Edc in top of last Edc made (first V-st completed), ch 3, Edc in sp at center of next Crocodile st, ch 3, V-st in next sl st (between the Crocodile sts), ch 3, Edc in sp at center of next Crocodile st, ch 3, V-st in beg ch - 3 V-sts, 2 Edc, and 4 ch-3 sps.
Row 5 (Crocodile st row): Ch 1, do not turn, rotate piece, Crocodile st around first V-st, *sl st in next Edc between Crocodile sts, Crocodile st around next V-st; rep from * across - 3 Crocodile sts. Row 6 (V-st row): Ch 4, do not turn, rotate piece, Edc in top of last Edc made (first V-st completed), ch 3, Edc in sp at center of next Crocodile st, *ch 3, V-st in next sl st (between the Crocodile sts), ch 3, Edc in sp at center of next Crocodile st; rep from * across, ch 3, V-st in beg ch - 4 V-sts, 3 Edc, and 6 ch-3 sps. Rows 7-58: Rep Rows 5 and 6 twenty-six times - 30 V-sts, 29 Edc, and 58 ch-3 sps at the end of Row 58. Row 59: Rep Row 5-30 Crocodile sts.
