Tech Savvy Senior Selfie Commercial Design II Teacher : Mrs. Stroud Due: 10/13/2017 Overview & Purpose Create a futuristic portrait of yourself in 2058 in an old fashioned style of bubble glass portraits using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Project Requirements 1. 13 x19 300 ppi JPG when completed 2. Futuristic portrait of self elderly based on Photoshop aging from family references. 3. Futuristic fashion based on a hobby, sport, or career choice. 4. Accessory detail hinting of favorite companion in the future (human or animal). 5. Two futuristic devices that aids you in either sight, hearing, eating, or communicating. 6. Plain background. 7. Oval frame embossed and beveled with decorative details of what planet or location you re living. 8. Warped portrait with reflection in glass of your outside environment (may be a photo from online of futuristic location or actual location with modification rights). 9. Wallpaper background behind framed portrait in two tone and one color that contains symbols of your birthday (flower, stone, zodiac, etc.), technology

elements (motherboard, pixels, coding, etc.), and cultural symbol of family tradition (crest, flag, letterform, food, etc.) 10.Print on large format printer on silver chrome paper. Mount and flush trim on foamboard. Objectives 1. Analyze the aging characteristics within your gene pool, cultural background, and environment. 2. Analyze futuristic fashion and technological advances in devices that address the needs of senior citizens physical problems. 3. Study the history of bubble glass portraits, when they were used, and their characteristics. 4. Study examples of futuristic character illustrations and their similarities, trends, and personal insight to the styles. 5. Analyze ageism in media for current and future representations of society. 6. Learn how to age yourself in Photoshop based on your. Materials Needed 1. Family photos of grandparents and great-grandparents 2. Photoshop 3. Illustrator 4. Paper, pencil 5. Tablet 6. Kyle s pastel brushes and others 7. Reference images Assessment (200 pts) Final project will be graded on these things: 1. Accurate ageing (50) 2. Accurate painting of likeness (50) 3. Accessories and futuristic fashion (25) 4. Bubble glass effects and reflections (25)

5. Oval frame (25) 6. Final wallpaper in background (25) 7. Submitted on time and in proper format (25 extra credit) Activity The detailed steps will be updated on this linked document until completed. Hang with me! It s a lot of steps but they re not as hard as they seem. Take a photo of yourself in the pose you want. We ll start from there. You have two choices, either draw out yourself old or photoshop a composite of your elders and yourself to get a blend of the two or more to base your sketch on digitally or traditionally. Gather some examples of portrait illustrations you find appealing of elderly people to inspire the direction you re going. Just looking at yourself and trying to get old is difficult because you re not use to looking old. Instead, having those older images to achieve as a goal gives you an end in sight for what you need to do. Make sure you always duplicate your original pictures so you don t ruin the first image and you can reference it to see where you started from.

4. Use the Ageing playlist to get some ideas for how you age a photo. Sample other pictures of elderly people for the chunks you need. Reminder, we re not using the photo so you don t have to be perfectly accurate, but the photo composite will give you the details and information you need to base your final illustration on. Compile a list of tools and tricks to accomplish the looks you need (ex. Baggy eyes, wrinkles, nose hair, etc.) 5. I chose to use the Liquify tool first to adjust the falling of the facial muscles that happens at old age, growth of the nose, and shrinking lips. 6. Using a layer mask, I erased the parts that were too exaggerated and blended it with the original layer below. 7. An example of stealing wrinkles is here. I tool a woman s crows feet and overlapped them with my eyes. Make sure you choose a similar angle.

8. After transforming and overlapping the image, I selected only the areas I needed and feathered the selection to make them soft. 9. Add a layer mask and use a brush to blend in the edges of the layer with your face while keeping the wrinkles. Lower the opacity for blending. 10.Use adjustments like Color Balance to adjust any color shifts that are distracting between the two different pictures.

11.On a blank layer sketch out the edges and arrangement of items that you need in proportion to one another. 12.Turn off your references and check your sketch as you go until you re satisfied with the details and information. 13.Create a new file 13 x19 300 ppi and place the sketch file into it.

14. Resize the sketch to fit the area needed. 15. Create a new layer and lasso the area to fill for the

figure. Edit>Fill>50% Gray. 16. Lock the transparency of the fill area and label paint. You may paint on this layer or use a clipping mask of blank layers above to start shading in shadow and highlights for form. 17. Return the sketch layer on and lower the opacity as a guideline.

18. Begin blocking in highlights and shadows either on layers above the grayed out shape or in the same layer. Place your reference photos near to view as you work.

19. Work in areas of the head structure. 20.Select areas of focus or use new layers to fill in and make featured areas of the face. Save the selections so you can pull them up later for adjustments.

21.When comfortable with changes, merge the layers and continue detailing. Save often!

22.Add any tech gadget features for your futuristic, tech savvy, senior. 23.Use some references for futuristic clothing.

24.When your black and white portrait is done, it is time to section everything into an oval shape. Create a folder and use the ellipse tool to make the oval size you want. Select the layer mask tool. Place all of your layers into that folder. 25.For the background, place a textured paper downloaded from online (high res) and blend it with Overlay. Use a radial gradient to illuminate around the head and darken around the edges. Use a layer of color on top of the background layers with Color Dodge blend mode to set the color.

26.To color the face like the old fashioned bubble glass portraits, add a blank layer above the face, hair, and clothing. Put the blend mode set to Overlay. Use a soft brush set to low transparency and blend the color you want over the areas needed. When the coloring is complete, then it s time to move onto the glass, frame, and wallpaper. To save space, save this PSD file for backup and then save as a PNG with full resolution and place it in a new file at 13 x19.

27. With the PNG layer active, Select>Load Selection. 28. Open the Path panel next to Layers and find the Work Path. Double click and rename Oval. 29. Select the brush tool and use a hard round brush at 100% opacity.choose a golden or silver color for your frame. Make the brush size as wide as you want your frame. 30. Create a new empty layer and name it Frame. 31. Select at the bottom of the Paths panel the Stroke Path with Brush button. You should see a perfect oval frame for your portrait. 32. In the Layers panel with the Frame layer active, select FX>Bevel & Emboss. Play with the settings and options until your frame has the style you want.

33.For glass effects, open a new layer between the portrait and the frame, name it Glass. Activate the selection again by going to Oval Path in the Path panel and right click to Make Selection. Return to the Glass Layer and fill with white at 100%. On the Fill option reduce to 0% so it is transparent. 34.Select FX and use Inner Glow, Inner Shadow, and Pattern Overlay. Make sure the angle matches with your lighting. You re aiming to have a highlight and shadow coming in from the outer edges so the oval seems to be made of glass and the Pattern Overlay has a low opacity pattern of a pebble to age the glass.

35.For the reflective environment, you may use any image you would like as a base for the room the picture is hanging in. Like this bubble glass, you can see the surroundings by the lights and windows reflected in the glass, which are curved in the glass convex form. 36.Photo collage or paint the surrounding area you want to reflect in the glass. Place Embed the file above the Glass Layer. Use Transform and Warp to curve the corners and sides in while widening the middle to make it look curved. Also, Filter>Lens Correction allows you to bloat the center of the image out and distort it. 37.Change the blend mode to either Color Dodge, Color Burn, or Lighten Color. Place a layer mask with Alt button pressed to block it out. Select with the lasso tool the window or reflection shapes you want around the edges of the glass. Study other bubble glass photos to see how reflections look and where to place them. Paint them in with a white brush at 30%.

38.Final stages of wallpaper in the background. Fill in the background with a color that compliments the portrait. I chose a burnt orange to complement the blues in my grey hair and window reflection. 39.To make a pattern for the background, open a new file 2 x2 at 300 ppi with a transparent background. Review requirements for the pattern symbols. I chose a Belgian lion and the Statue of Liberty because I m half Belgian and American. Select the area and Edit>Define Pattern>OK. 40.Return to the original portrait and create a blank layer above the filled in background color. Edit>Fill>Pattern. Find the pattern swatch you just made and fill in the whole area with the pattern. Use adjustment layers for color changes. If the pattern is too small or large, return to

the pattern file you started with and adjust the sizes, repeating the steps to make a pattern swatch. 41.Merge both background layers together and add texture by selecting Pattern Overlay in FX. Use Dark Coarse Weave on Soft Light and scale to where you barely see it on the background.

42.In the final stage, apply a drop shadow from the frame onto the wallpaper. Adjust the distance, spread, and opacity to appear natural. 43.Save the final PSD and save as a JPG for a flat, lower file size. Backup both files in another place so you don t lose them.
