Party with Patrick/October 2014 Ghostly Greetings Raw-edge applique makes quick work of this festive and not-so-frightening wall hanging. The black tulle layer over the top is the perfect finishing touch. Instructions 1. Refer to the Cutting and Piecing page for cutting instructions. 2. Trace the templates onto the paper side of your fusible adhesive leaving approximately ½ between tracings. Trace the dashed placement lines also, if desired. 3. Roughly cut the templates from the adhesive just outside of the traced line. 4. Place the adhesive templates onto the wrong side of their corresponding appliqué fabrics and fuse in place according to manufacturer s instructions. 5. Neatly cut the appliqués from the fabrics on the traced template lines. 6. Transfer the dashed placement lines to the right side of the fabric with a non-permanent pen or pencil, if desired. You can use a light table or daylit window. 7. Peel the paper backing from the appliqués and arrange them on the background piece. Fuse appliqués into place. 8. Sandwich batting between quilt top and backing with wrong sides of quilt and backing against batting. Place tulle layer over the quilt top. This will add a foggy-night feel to this spooky scene and protect the raw edges of the appliqué pieces. 9. Quilt as desired. Simple wavy lines across the top add to the foggy look. Trim backing, batting, and tulle to match quilt top edge. 10. Hem straight edge of hanging pocket piece as instructed on Cutting Page template. Place hanging pocket on back of quilt (wrong side of hanging pocket against quilt backing) matching the curved edge and stitch in place along outside edge, using a scant 1/4" seam. 11. Refer to continuous Bias Binding Instructions to cut binding fabric. Bind as usual, using the 2¼ bias binding strip created. Visit www.patricklose.com

Cutting 1. From the purple fabric cut one 12 x 18" rectangle. Refer to half circle template below to trim the top of background rectangle. 2. From the black fabric cut one 15" square for binding. 3. From the backing fabric cut one 14 x 20" and one 12 x 7" (hanging pocket) rectangles. The remaining fabric will be used for appliqués. Cutting the Curve 1. Fold a 12 x 18" purple background piece in half, folded piece measures 6 x 18". Use the quarter round template to cut a rounded end to one 12" side, making a curved-top background piece. 2. Fold a 12 x 7" hanging pocket rectangle in half, folded piece measures 6 x 7". Use quarter round template to cut one hanging pocket piece. Cut this away Cut this away for hanging pocket Template Template Background Fabric place on fold 12 inch quarter round template Use this to cut the arched top of the background and the hanging pocket to be sewn to the back of the quilt for displaying on an arched top hanger Roll this edge of the hanging pocket ¼" and press. Roll another ¼" and stitch to hem.

B Continuous Bias Binding Instructions Create a continuous bias binding strip, economically. Cut the 15 x 15" bias binding fabric square in half once diagonally (45 degree angle). Place two triangular pieces right sides together along straight edge as shown in Illustration A. Using a ¼"-wide seam allowance sew triangle pieces together. Press. Using a gridded transparent ruler, measure from the long edge and draw a parallel line every 2¼ on the wrong side of the fabric, as shown in Illustration B. Fold the marked piece right sides together to form a tube, aligning the edges and pinning the marked lines so one width of the binding extends beyond the edge on each side as shown in Illustration C. Sew the tube together and press the seam open. Cut on the marked line to make one continuous 2¼ wide bias binding strip. Use this strip to bind any curved edges.
