[the knowledge-based economy] Palm Beach County is the heart of Florida s emergence as a nationally ranked biotech center. In fact, Forbes.com recently ranked Palm Beach County #3 on its list of Hotbeds of Tomorrow s Technology. With more than 150 biotechnology companies in Palm Beach County, the area continues to be a global leader in the discovery and advancement of drugs and pharmaceuticals, medical devices and equipment, as well as in research and development. Our institutes of higher education, research parks, incubators and technology transfer center create an environment where biotech companies thrive. Now that we have, in essence, anchored the scientific landscape with Scripps Florida and Max Planck Florida, we are hoping that other scientific candidates will come here too. Dr. Harry Orf, Scripps Florida Progressive business policies, quality workforce and a positive economic climate encourage innovative partnerships and capital investment that enables companies to compete globally. [the collaboration] Palm Beach County s strength in biotechnology, biomedical industries, and research and development can be attributed to our existing infrastructure, top-notch universities with robust bioscience programs, a highly educated and motivated workforce, and support from an entrepreneurial business regulatory climate. These assets create an attractive landscape for venture capital and angel networks. The state, county and municipal governments support the development of the life science industry. Recently, the collaboration of Palm Beach County, the State of Florida, the Town of Jupiter, Florida Atlantic University and the business community helped successfully recruit Max Planck Society to Palm Beach County. All Florida companies enjoy a low corporate tax rate and individuals enjoy no personal income tax. It s no wonder companies are looking at Palm Beach County as an ideal place to take their research discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace. Innovation results from the combined efforts of for-profit companies, educational institutes and state government to engage in joint research proposals and projects.
