Edgar Monroe was born on February 11, 1897 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and became an active businessman upon leaving the military. He served as an executive in companies such as Boland Machine and Manufacturing Co., Inc., Canal Bank and Trust Co., Canal Assets, Inc., Southdown, Inc., and Electric Bond and Share. Mr. Monroe was a generous philanthropist, over the years donating tens of millions of dollars to Catholic charities and Loyola University New Orleans. Mr. Monroe did not attend college, but he was honored by Loyola University as a Doctor of Humane Letters in 1991 as thanks for his extensive charitable contributions. He died on May 6, 1992 at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. Scope and Content The J. Edgar Monroe Collection consists primarily of documents related to Mr. Monroe s business interests, such as the Canal Bank and Trust Co., Canal Assets, Inc., Electric Bond and Share, and Southdown, Inc. The collection also contains a small number of Monroe s personal documents and school records of Robert J. Monroe, J. Edgar Monroe s nephew.

System of Arrangement This collection has been arranged into nine series. The original order of materials that began as bound volumes (covering one bound volume from Series IV and the entirety of Series V VII) has been preserved. The arrangement scheme for the rest of the collection was imposed during processing in the absence of a usable original order. Except for Series V VII, the folders of each series are arranged alphabetically. Conditions Governing Access The collection is open for research use. Series Description Series I Canal Bank and Trust Co. Primarily correspondence and documents concerning the shareholders of Canal Bank and Trust Co., in Liquidation between the years 1947 and 1954. One folder contains shareholder letters from between the years 1950 and 1957 forwarded to a Mr. Cameron W. Wolfe, Jr. on May 21, 1973. Also see Series IX: Oversized for framed 19 th century bank notes issued by the Bank of Louisiana and the New Orleans Canal & Banking Company. Series II Canal Assets, Inc. Primarily financial reports and shareholder documents of Canal Assets, Inc. from 1954 until its merger with Southdown, Inc. in 1969. One folder contains earnings and profits reports from between the years 1949 and 1963 forward to a Mr. W.A. West on September 30, 1968. Another folder contains correspondence from 1960 regarding outstanding fees James G. Schillin claimed he was owed upon his death in a letter addressed to his widow and step-daughter. Series III Electric Bond and Share Material related to the Electric Bond and Share Company from between the years 1941 and 1969. Includes magazine clippings from Ebasco News and the April 8, 1961 cover of Business Week, assorted pages from the Standard and Poor s stock report from August 12, 1941 March 23, 1964, and a notice of an annual shareholder meeting and proxy statement from May 22, 1964. Also see Series IX: Oversized for a resolution of thanks to J. Edgar Monroe. Series IV Southdown Merger Documents related to the merger of Canal Assets, Inc. and Southdown, Inc. in 1969. Includes financial statements, insurance schedules, IRS documents, shareholder correspondence, and shareholder agreements. Also includes one bound volume dated August 21, 1969 of material concerning the merger, much of which is duplicated in the previous folders. Series V Canal Bank and Trust Co. Assets Register Register of the Canal Bank and Trust Co., in Liquidation s assets. Includes checks and notes underwritten by the bank, mineral lease agreements, inventories of office fixtures and furniture, and other outstanding debts and balances. Series VI Canal Bank and Trust Co. Board of Directors Minutes Pages from the April 1930 minute book of the Canal Bank and Trust Co. Board of Directors, from between the dates April 15, 1931 and May 18, 1933. Also included after page 184 are minutes and documents from several meetings of the Canal Bank and Trust Co., in Liquidation, from between the dates August 5, 1948 and March 5, 1954.

Series VII Canal Assets, Inc. Shareholders Binder Pages from a shareholders binder containing reports and notices concerning Canal Assets, Inc. from between the years 1954 to 1969. Series VIII Personal Documents and Effects A small number of personal documents and effects belonging to J. Edgar Monroe and his nephew, Robert J. Monroe. Includes photograph of J. Edgar Monroe from his Army service in World War I, school records of Robert J. Monroe, and a military cap with various World War II and USSR related pins. Additionally includes newspaper and magazine clippings related to the Vanderbilt family. Members of the Vanderbilt family owned property in Newport, Rhode Island, as did the Monroe family. Mr. Monroe and his wife owned the mansion known as Rosecliff for 25 years before donating it to the Newport Preservation Society, during which time it was featured in the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby. Edgar Monroe from Loyola University in gratitude for his charitable contributions, a resolution of thanks from the board of the Electric Bond and Share Company, and framed 19 th century banknotes from the Bank of Louisiana and the New Orleans Canal & Banking Company.
