Project Summary BACKGROUND: The applicant, Amoco, represented by William Sheehan from Ahern Signs, requests approval of four (4) wall signs, canopy graphics, and replacement panels for the existing single tenant ground sign for the rebranded gas station at 1533 Waukegan Road. The applicant proposes the installation of 22.0-inch black Amoco lettering on the east and west facades of the canopy with halo illumination. The applicant is requesting a waiver from the Wall Sign Design Guidelines for lettering greater than 18.0 inches in height. The applicant proposes the installation of a non-illuminated 36.0-inch tall logo on the north and south facades of the canopy. The proposed logo signage would require a variation from the Zoning Board of Appeals for signage greater than 8% of the façade. The applicant proposes the panel replacement of panels within the existing single tenant ground sign. The top panel would feature a 51.0-inch tall logo with an opaque background. Digital copy would be installed for the gas prices with regular gas being displayed with red 15.9-inch numbers and diesel gas being displayed with green 9.8-inch numbers. The applicant proposes 52.0-inch wide by 28.625-inch tall logo on the north, south, and west elevations with architectural louvers in anodized aluminum on either side of the proposed logos. Appearance Commission Review APPEARANCE PLAN COMMENTS: Staff comments after evaluating the proposal for compliance with the Appearance Plan: Sign Criteria from Appearance Plan: Compatibility with building architecture Compatibility with signs on adjoining buildings Harmony with surrounding landscape Good scale in relationship to surroundings Use of harmonious colors Staff comments: o The wall signs on the north and south elevations would require a variation as the proposed sign area is greater than 8% of the façade. The Appearance Commission should consider whether the proposed logo sign is appropriate for the canopy. o The Appearance Commission should consider whether a wall sign on the east elevation of the canopy is appropriate as it faces residential. If deemed appropriate, the Appearance Commission should consider requiring the sign to be non-illuminated. o The applicant should confirm whether the logo signs on the north and south elevations would be non-illuminated. o The applicant should confirm the panels in the single tenant ground sign would have opaque backgrounds. o The applicant has submitted graphics for the pumps which include only corporate colors. o The applicant should confirm all existing landscaping would remain surrounding the single tenant ground sign. o The applicant should confirm the dimensions of the convenience store so the proposed signage can be reviewed for compliance. o The petitioner shall furnish material and color samples of all proposed signage for review by the Appearance Commission. POTENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACTS: The proposed signage is for an existing gas station. The Appearance Commission should review the proposed sign on the east elevation facing the residential development to the east. 6
